  • So in the film, does Mikako die or not? I never quite understood that part.

  • @CosmosHeart *SPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILER* It was meant to end as a cliffhanger. But inferring from the scene at the beginning where she was all alone in a world, I would assume she died.

  • @ulamss5 Thanks. ^^

  • What language she's performing in? Esperanto?

  • @septurion7 Английский...

  • @Serygito Thank you for enlightenment ;)

The anime has its own good points too. Love the art the anime has.

  • Hey Onizuka90 do you have the sheet music to this song? It says that you have the music but i'm not sure if that's MP3 download or what. Would you please email me

  • The start of the song sounds strangely like the ending song to the Lord of the Rings

  • If you buy the Shinkai Collection from Amazon or elsewhere, it includes the "Voices" soundtrack. This song is included on it.

but the song is good in any case :) :) :)

  • I bought this film last weekend! It made me cry. I prefer it in Japanese but I cannot find this song on limewire or... anyway!! can you help me tell where it is? thank you ^_^ Peace Out

  • !!!

I cried like a little baby when I first saw it. =( I was literally on the floor crying my eyes out, it was so fucking intense.

  • lol It really was but I WISH I could find the song

    =(

  • thats a BIT much... but yes it was an emotionally intense film (thanks largely in part to the music).

  • Hahaha, yeah, I overreacted. I'm okay now when I watch it. XP Sometimes when I watch it when I'm already sad, I start to cry, but mostly I'm good now. And yes, it's largely thanks to the music.

But yeah, that's what happened to me when I saw it. I wasn't expecting something so powerful and beautiful in only 22 minutes or so. It was that last "koko ni iru" that really set me off...

  • well hey its all good... exact same thing for me. I shed some tears first time i saw it and too it was at the end with that theme song. I wasnt exactly bawling or curled up on the floor tho lol.

I must say tho... the english version of this song... ick! >:O Jap version is MUCH better. I just bought the Shinkai Collection bundle today on Ebay! cant wait to get the soundtrack cd. first time i got the dvd from the library i had the menus up on my tv for literally hours! :)

  • Krazy3kev3, where did you hear this song in Japanese, might I ask?

  • this is one of the few shows that i cried during, after, and while rewatching. At 20 minutes, it packs more of an emotional punch than many other series that span hours.

  • Aye, it is a powerful little piece, is it not?

If you like this one so much, I also recommend to you Haibane-Renmei.

  • who is the singer who sings this song?

  • Mankiw2000, the song is sung by someone that Shinkai-san refers to as Ms. Low. That is the only information given in the "Voices Of A Distant Star" DVD. I would guess that she is a friend of his whom he asked to sing the song because he created "Voices" on his own computer and didn't have access to professional singers. However, I doubt anyone else could have sung it so beautifully.

  • I believe her name is Ai Miyoko, but I can't exactly be sure. Regardless, her voice is beautiful.

  • does anyone know where to download this song??? I can't find it anywhere... It's no beautiful and filled with emotion!!!

  • I was wondering about the idea with the time. Even though there was a great distance in time, shouldn't she be able to return back in the same time, thus only having lost "real" time in terms of days or something like that? I mean, shouldn't she already arrived back until the last message got to him?

  • Sorry, it's not that easy for me to explain.

  • Well, doesn't it really depend on how fast the ship she's on can travel?

  • I really love this song I found the lyrics inside my favorites and I was like what is this then I looked it up on Youtube and I listen to it and it brings back a warm feeling! thank you for sharing I would love to down load this someone but I can't find it where did you get this song!!

  • IF you really want to know what happens buy the manga

  • although the film is the original version. the manga is good too though:)

  • Thanks for posting this Ive been looking for it. You'd think after 8 years the guy would have gotten a new phone.

  • if that was me sending texts i'd spam he with that shit so it would even really take long to get a new one hehe

  • lol

  • Thank you for posting this.

It's a song that always manages to touch my heart, no matter how hardened I may try to make it.

In the simple 30-minutes of this movie, it managed to nearly bring me to tears. I don't know why, yet. It just struck a strong emotional cord in me.

  • I cried at the end poor Noboru or however u spell his name T.T

  • It must truly be painful, having to love someone the way that they did. Not even on the same planet, each text message taking longer and longer to reach eachother...

  • I never figured out what happened to the girl at the end it ended by them saying "I'm here" or something like that.

  • I made the unfortunate assumption that, though she managed to destroy one of the enemy flagships, She - along with the rest of the Human fleet was destroyed.

  • If you wait a few seconds after they show the paper "Space Technology Journal" the top headline reads "Transmition from 2047, victorious in battle at syrius 8 years ago" and Bottom headline reads "Massive losses reported, Spaceship Rissitea the only one with the chance to return home" its around 20when Norburu enters his room and messes with the lights.

  • Do also consider reading the manga for further info on what happens about the battle. Very nice ending I might say to such a wonderful short anime film.

  • It was a metaphorical, symbolic, "leading off" ending. The whole point is for the audience to come up with their own conclusion to what happens...but it's all very bittersweet;_;

  • @Sunkist02 It´s about their thought, what both of them would have: if their thoughts could travell through time and space -> the answer of both is "I'm here"

and wtf, I was nerally crying. It was like I can feel their pain!

I think she returned with the Lysithea.

  • @Sunkist02 in the manga

    *SPOILER*

she meets up with him again

  • @sakuraknight

I much prefer the Makoto Shinkai's original ending then, though I understand he wrote the manga adaptation as well. That was for a slightly different audience, I would say. The emotions and the message of the story don't require that it have any different an ending than the OVA did. That said, Shinkai is my favorite person working in animation right now, and every film he's made is beautiful and touching. Here's looking forward to his next film, finally.

  • @ccv707 What original ending? You mean the one where they meet back up, and the fansubbers didn't translate the headline on the newspaper that explains that she survived?

  • @sakuraknight

    no way....for sure?

  • @ThomyThompson in the manga, Mikako didn't die, but her fleet was lost. Earth sent another exploring team to search for them, and Noburo was in that team. That's where the manga ends.

  • @hoangnamld

Meanwhile I have read the manga, but thx for the answer. ;-)

Bit in my opinion the fate of Mikako isn't clear. She ist lost in the middle of a battle and her remain is unknown for the reader.

  • @Sunkist02 she dies trying to protect her ship, the Lysithea. And ofcourse, when he says he'll stick by his promise we can only assume he'll die alone.

been awhile since i saw a romance, and if a had a heart i'd cry, ahah

Though this OVA is an open ending, so it ultimately depends on how the viewer interprets it-
