  • I was sweating watching this!

  • He just burned more calories then most Americans burn in a week!

  • TNUC drum solo by GFR is pretty good too. Check out that video. Different vibe then this but still very good. The solo doesn't start until about 3 min into it.

  • @sativascience I read an interview where Jim said David used to film him & asked him if he could use some moves. Jim also said he himself tried to copy some moves & the look from Mark Farner. So every 1 gets some of their moves from someone they admire. David's is just very obvious.

  • This is one "wrong" video. =p

  • Could that rack tom be any closer to his face?

  • @WilfordMays can it be any bigger?

  • Great.. I am at the strange part of Youtube yet again.

  • Can't stop watching this... Jim Dandy is the best front man I have ever seen!!

  • Incredible... 7:00 where the band kicks back in... you just dont see talent and personality like that anymore, and the genuine fun they just had on stage... I love it!!

  • Glad to see so many realize how groundbreaking this was for its time. I graduated from P.I.T. in 1994 and my private instructor (who is now the program director) told me when Aldridge first came out that most drummers thought he probably had a doctorate in music and that they had never heard anything quite like him. Tommy Aldridge is a true legend of drumming and has influenced legions of drummers, directly and indirectly.

  • I've seen Tommy twice. Once with Ozzy, and the 2nd time was best, because I didn't know I was going to see him. I went to Billy Bobs in Fort Worth to see Ted, and was telling a few people about this new drummer he has who's really good, (Tommy Clufetos). When they uncovered the drum kit I thought...."Holy Shit! That looks like Tommy Aldridge's kit!" The band took the stage, and out comes a shirtless, wirey ball of hair! LOL He really kicked ass that night too.

  • Tommy Aldridge is the best drummer to step foot on this great green earth .

  • @MustangDrummer62 I wouldn't say that by any stretch of the imagination but he is fantastic. I've been a fan since the early days of BOA and honestly feel he did his best playing with BOA. Saw then live at the Spectrum in Philly yrs. ago with Black Sabbath and he was really incredible. I tell everyone to p/u their live record Ranch & Roll is really a great record that captures the magic of BOA and I believe is Tommy's best playing IMHO.

  • infinito Tommy Aldridge 1973 fantastico!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Bonham could never play like this, take it from a drummer, back then, Aldridge "owned"

  • I think its more like...if it wasn't for Bonham, then Aldridge wouldn't play quite like he does now...or then.

  • Good God, I reckon' I went to dozens of BOA concerts and will never forget those red suspenders and the incredible human hunk of energy wearing them. I loved BOA and particularly Tommy Aldridge.

  • Good lord, I am still catching my breath after having witnessed Tommy Aldridge's drum solo. Wow!

  • Awesome!

  • I want the rest of this show! anyway possible?

  • he is untired ;p

  • wow that is just outta sight !!!!

  • I would love to be a fly on the wall and see the looks on their faces when Tommy came in to audition. remember this was the early 70's very few drummers played with such ferocity

  • very few drummers were playing with dbl bass this well back in 73.

  • so . . . . play the same basic beat just faster or slower, play with your hands for no reason (why not just get some congas and do it right?), knock stuff over? Sorry but this is not all that impressive although it would be entertaining, especially in 1973.

  • John Bonham was and is the best. He had speed, unbelieveable groove, technical ability, complexity, a right foot like a rabbit and the best sounding set to this day..hands down the best all around drummer. Not to take away from Tommy here-he's a fuckin beast too!!!!

  • You guy's are forgetting another great drummer Joe Franco from the Good Rats

the greatest unknown rock band of all time

  • The WILD man!!!!!! Love it :)

  • uh huh

  • haha i love how in 1973 he still looks the same as he does right now.

  • Very underated drummer. Very uncredited too. All this stuff he was doing with the double bass and all, that was unheard of in 1973. Him, Keith Moon, Ginger Baker, they were the innovators of double bass drumming.

  • @theIdolThreat .... PLEASE don't forget Cozy Powell

  • @LeStraTele how could that name escape my mind as i was typing that? anyway, thanks for adding haha

  • Saw him with Ozzy and Whitesnake,he is a very underrated drummer.

  • his endurance comes from his cocaine days.Still very good drug induced solo

  • @GroffinTiffin why would anyone compare jazz drumming with Tommy? Jazz is great ,this is kick ass rock drumming!

  • Comment removed

  • I think that Aldridge is a better drummer than Lee or Ulrich, but not Peart. (I've seen both Aldridge and Peart in concert). I love Aldridge's crazy style, definitely unique, but nobody can match Pearts technical ability or musical inclination. Peart's drumming is another level higher than anyone who has ever played.

  • @Northof49th1 but Tommy does all this with 1/2 as many drums

  • @Northof49th1 - Peart is great, but Aldridge is more my speed of drummer -- energy, power, and emotion in a great technical package. Along those lines I also really admire(d) Eric Carr, Randy Castillo, Vic Foxx, John Bonham, Ray Luzier, Terry Bozzio, Jimmy Chamberlin, and Josh Freese. As for Tommy Lee and Lars Ulrich, they're both rather 'meh' players in my opinion. Lee is flashy but otherwise rote (outside of "Feelgood"), Ulrich not flashy yet painfully predictable.

  • My idol !!!

  • That set was on ebay about two years ago ,wonder who won it.

  • As great as this is , even in today's context. You really can't imagine what it was like in 1973 unless you were there. There was just absolutely nothing else like it. That's not to say there weren't some great drummers around; there were. But nobody had done anything quite like this yet. It was jaw dropping.

  • @rl418 innovator.

  • @rl418 Agree! Tommys drumming in the 70´s and 80´s are more influential than he´s got credit for. It´s up there with Bonham, Paice, Moon etc At least in my book. Check out is drumming on the Gary Moore live album from around 83, that´s awesome!

  • When it comes down to a raw energy, spastic, stick twirling, double bass thumping get down,NO ONE beats Tommy Aldridge!!!

  • Nice video, Tommy is one of the best. I really wish some of the Lars lovers would watch this clip, very musical. For the record, there is no "BEST" drummer, we all have our own style. There are just some that are way, way better...

  • WHY IS NOBODY MENTIONING THAT A MAN SMASHES A WASHBOARD AT THE END OF THIS VIDEO

  • @ddovey Because it is BOA and the washboard was a percussion instrument of the band. Yes, I realize it is hard to understand for a twit poofter like yourself.

  • @fligemon hahahahahaha oh man OK

  • Baker influence a little Appice as well

  • Tommy Aldridge IS the BEST rock drummer EVER!! Herein lies the irrefutable evidence!!!

  • I wouldnt say Tommy is the best period.Ive been playing for sometime and im not too bad i dnt think u can put a title on who's the best cuz we all have our own styles and when u get behind a set something changes as a drummer.u either have it or u don't!

  • Tommy Aldridge looks like a mechanical monkey! HA!HA!HA!HA!HA!HA!

  • thats the best way of keeping fit...ever

  • tbh Ginger bakers Drum Solo on The blind faith album the double bass iss so solid on that Fast but not to fast so it lets the notes flow its genius Gingers always a beast with those double bass drums and STilll iss!! you should listen to Cream more

  • thenoblequran (Ctrl+Enter)

  • Aldridge is a beast

  • Man this guy is freaking Amamazing.......that was Awesome.

  • Tommys best solo ever!!!!! Yes!!

  • Whos the dumbass talking crap about TA's timinug? You my friend may want to check your timing. I hardly think that all the bands hes help to make killer bands think hes a little slow. Maybe you just don't know double bass drumming. TA is the best and will be till he dies. Hes not a .6 off as you say. Maybe your timing is.

  • After watching STILL another video of TA, why do so many people make so much noise about UK drummers??!!! I am aghast!!!

  • yea Neil Peart is great no question, a little story....back in 78 I saw the Pat Travers Band open for Rush In San Bernardino and I got to tell you that Tommy at least on that night smoked Neil Peart. The Talk on everybody's lips coming out of the building was about Tommy.....Granted It might been a little flash over substance but damn he was just smoking on matters that night

  • check Tommy on the Pat Travers Albums

  • I always felt that Tommy Aldridge played a bit too far behind the music, if you know what I mean. It's like he hits the snare .6 seconds after the true beat. It's hard to explain.

  • black oak rules

  • ORIGINAL 1973 DRUMMER .ARE THE ONLY COPY TODAY AFTER LONG NOT TO EXCCED 70S

  • I just saw Jim Dandy last night. He is a guy that does not have to act cool because he just is cool.

  • drank 4 beers watching this and loved every min

  • starr, watts, baker, mitchell, bonham, moon, aldirdge, paice, palmer, bozzio, colaiuta, peart, van halen, portnoy, cameron, carey, the atomic clock, bun E, copland, steve "machinegunn" smith...that's my top twenty. :)

  • I met Mr. Aldridge at a drum clinic way back in 1992. During a question and answer session, he was asked what advice he would give young drummers starting out. I'll never forget his answer, "Take lessons. I never took them. I believe I could have gone a lot farther if I had taken lessons." Excuse me? Black Oak Arkansas, Ozzy, Whitesnake, Yngwie? Farther? I'd say Mr. Aldridge has done alright.

  • With a face like Aldridge you better be a damn good drummer if you plan on getting laid.

  • I love how when people talk about the greatest drummers, they always leave out thee greatest drummer, Neil Peart.

  • Yeah Tommy is good.if he wasn't,Ozzy would have never had him play with him for those years. There are a lot,and I say a lot of good and great drummers out there. Some known and famous and most unknown. But no matter how great a drummer is,no matter how much "STUFF" he can do,including myself, because I have been playing for nearly 40 years.Nobody, and I mean nobody in rock/metal drumming, can touch Moonie.Better known as,Keith Moon, deseased drummer for the Who.

  • I saw BOA in 1971. They opened the show with a build up of sound to a crescendo.

It was dramatic and very indicative of what was to follow , an all out rock and roll blitzkreig ! The James Gang with Joe Walsh had to follow them !

  • 1 Bonham

    2 Moon

    3 Doug Clifford

    4 Tommy Alridge

  • @ccrstucook

    1. Shawn drover

    2. Jimmy DeGrasso

    3. Nick menja

    4. Gar Samuelson

    5.Tommy Alridge

  • is that david lee roth on stage? coulda fooled me

  • @sinborn41214 I'm pretty sure DLR was heavily influenced

  • I think i might have lost a filling.

  • NOBODY had kick chops like Tommy Back in the day, Nuff said.

  • Neil Pert ,Mike Portnoy, Tommy Aldridge. in that order

  • @rivernatefisher .....Bonham....Moon??

  • Van Wholen?

  • Zoinks!!

  • Oww!

  • Oh My God He Could Bring Down A Plane ! ! !

  • He may have been in Cactus too

  • fakkin A

  • One of the best hard rock drummers!

  • Comment removed

  • Looking back at this band now.....They were horrible. Tommy Aldridge is a great drummer, the only thing worthwhile in it, but his solo hasn't changed in 35 years.....no kidding 35 years.

  • my boyfriends old drummer

  • My ex-brother-in-law, who is an outstanding drummer, and has been since the age of 11 or so, proclaimed Neil Peart from Rush as the best ever. I kept telling him to look out for Tommy Aldridge. Long story short, he went to an Oz concert while Tommy was still playing with Ozzy. He came away dazed, and convinced that Tommy was the best drummer in the world. Tommy IS the best. Period.

  • @Dogheadj well ur bro in law must be deaf cause neil peart is a million times better than this dude....

  • Ginger Baker and Billy Cobham EAT YOUR FREAKIN' HEARTS OUT!!!!!!

Aldridge does not get the credit he deserves. I've been a drummer for close to 45 years now, and I know chops and stick control when I see it. Seriously!!

  • why would you have toms that are like 20 inches ugly as fuck!

  • @Meatlooaf - coz he wants to?

  • @headbone3232 : Maybe because he knows how to use them?

  • WOW!! Some vintage TOMMY . I feel privileged..thanx for sharing. Looks like he's been using the same shtick all these years. What a crazy animal back then. I met him and he's a real down to earth guy.

  • This man never has been young!

  • Met the drummer from Edmonton's Striker. He seemed around 20 years old.I asked him who his fav drummers were.1st one he said was Tommy Aldridge!!! I am an old goat,so it was great someone young knows how great Tommy is!!!!!!!!

  • Wow

  • i was barely born 1973

  • the drums are slowly DYING!!! SLAP!! DIE SLAP!! DIE SLAP!!

  • awsome!

  • Tommy doesn't look any different in 2009 than in 1973. What's up with that?

  • wow! the singer rocked the washed board... TOMMY rules!

  • Tommy is a great master of drums

  • I remember Tommy from his stint with Ozzy Osbourne in the Blizzard of Ozz days (Randy Rhoads on guitar, Bob Daisley on bass, etc.). I knew Tommy was phenomenal, but I never knew he started out in Black Oak Arkansas. Cool. Now I'm a Black Oak Arkansas fan too. Jim Dandy should sue David Lee Roth for copyright infringement.

  • @mikedeviant

That's what I have been saying for years. Definitely got the look and mannerisms of Jim Dandy

  • You should have seen him with Pat Travers back in the late 70's...KILLER BAND!

  • this guy is the best next to neil pert

  • Tommy was a Bonham freak. Bonham was a Ginger Baker/Keith Moon freak. so you hear some of their styles in his playing. I think Ginger was the first rock drummer to use double-bass drums. Tommy is fucking amazing. I hear he plays with THIN LIZZY these days.

  • @bigfatassloser Ginger was more of a Jazz Drummer

  • Best hard rock drummer !

  • This man is nuts! This Band is nuts!!!!& i mean that in the best possible way!I love em!!!!!!!!

  • if this is from 1973,as a drummer i can't think of or no of any drummer who was playing double bass like this.tommy was/is one of a kind

  • @drummermizike carmine appice.keith moon.louis belson.

  • @nastymonsters2 all were/are excellent drummers, but i feel double bass drumming prior to the 70's was done as accent drumming, ginger baker was always regarded as double bass drummer yet i feel it was for accents.keith moon was a beast one of my favorites as a musician, showman, individual, etc.but he played with no hihat, both feet on the bass drums all the time...the only drummer i found on you tube playing like this was ian paice (with double bass).i would never put down an artist.DRUMMERS RULE!

  • @drummermizike moon used a hi hat on tons of times theres plenty of videos on here to back that up..carmine used what you would consider rock double bass 16s 32s..

  • @nastymonsters2 true but a majority would have him with a cymbal where the hihat would be..and carmine appice didn't play double bass like aldridge,(in my opinion)..i'm talking about his speed..

  • Nice.Dude was the shit>

  • Better than sex holy fuck !!!!!!!!!!!!

  • GOOOOOOOOOOOOD DRUMER???????????

  • The Drummer!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Wow! Quite possibly the greatest drum solo I've ever witnessed- John Bonham move over.

  • @pduvall100 chkout some Ginger Baker,, he's right up there to

  • Man that was fricken awesome drumming. Ok doesn't come into it. Wow is the correct reation to rock drumming of this calibre.

  • He was just OK..Double base drum in the 70's a bit unusual. That is what made this band different and of course Jim Dandy Mangrums voice

  • @jeffreyjennings You're either trolling, high, or simply wrong. Tommy has always been one of rock's great drummers.

  • Oh, OK your right

  • hell of a drummer

  • Does anyone know what video show this is from ?

  • @slinkydinky999 Looks like this is from Don Kirschner's Rock Concert. You can see the neon in the background about 15 seconds in.

  • He was great for OZZY..and I saw him with Ted Negent also...But You guy`s tell me he is an UNDERRATED DRUMMER...NO-ONE touces him but NEIL PEART from RUSH...I wish he would bring his drum clinic to Houston Texas....Love Ya Tommy...Mario Lira...God Bless Ya BROTHER..keep hitting those DAMN SKINS.....

  • Tommy Aldridge laid a huge foundation for future deummers with his awesome fast feet , he was and still is awewsome

  • I saw him play with ted Nugent about 7 years ago. They opened up for Kiss, and stole the show.

  • Now I know where David Lee Roth got his look..Funny the bass guitarist looks like the guy from Spinal Tap

  • has he ever been a bad drummer? it just seems like he has always kicked ass! TOMMY RULES!!

  • All i can say is that Tommy Aldridge is the Fucking best drumer that the world has ever seen!

  • I bought drums off of craigslist and it ended up being his listing. He said it was "Thomas" lives in an average suburban home.

  • I think mabe Aldridge can throw a better fit than I can.

    Shure sounds better anyway !

When Jim Dandy called, Tommy Aldridge was there !!!

    No matter what.........

  • he played in Gary Moores band,Pat Travers,Thin Lizzy,Ozzy, these guys, teh list goes on

  • i could say his the best drummer ever

  • What I meant was did he play with anybody else besides Black Oak or Whitesnake.Anybody know ?

  • He played for Ozzy for a couple years.

  • I was looking up drum solos and saw this one and one of Buddy Rich and all I can say is Holy Shit.I have all of Black Oaks Albums.Anybody know what other bands that Tommy Aldridge might have played with.He knows his shit thats for sure and fast.

  • Whitesnake, Ozzy and a few others.

  • i just watched a vid of him in 08 and his drum config seems to stay the same as far as where his snare and toms are.

  • when you want the BEST you get tommy adlridge in your band, you understand!

  • Great fuckin statement

  • @gilly6666 Ozzy was quite the thinker to choose Tommy xD Amazing drummer, he is!

  • I saw them in '73 or '74 and if I remember, at the end of the show the guitar players swung their guitars like baseball bats and smashed them together in the middle of the stage. Did anyone ever see them do this?

  • @rimgabob Yup... Sure did. They headlined a show with REO Speedwagon and Montrose, featuring a young Sammy Hagar, as the openers and they demolished those guitars just like you seen. Having led a relatively sheltered live up to that point, I was duly impressed!

  • @rimgabob No doubt Saw it too .And if memory serves me ...right over Mangrums' head.

  • Great Drum Solo

  • I'm usually not too keen on drum solos, but this is incredible! Outstanding!

Although it doesn't have the whole song here, "Up" was one of my favorites by them.

Thanks for the heads up, Dick.

  • I ate a whole roll of Ritz crackers while watching thi solo and didn't even taste them LOL!!! My eye and ears were glued to the monitor and my hand went back and forth from my pack of ritz to my mouth. Tommy Aldridge is tremendous!!! I know he's in the top 10 but I would say more like the top 3 in the world.

  • @bubbba2 you're ridiculous.

  • The live record solo blows this away! Find it. U wont B sorry. His intensity & focus on the record slaps Ur face like a big line of coke. Its thrilling 2 hear sum1 that intensely kicking ass, not missing a mark flowing & crackling w/electricity, telling the ancient story between man & drums. The solo has a discernable arc, dynamics, rich tone, colorful cymbal use & it captures Ur interest on 2 distinct levels. Ur gut & Ur intellect. U can clearly hear an artist @1 w/his instrument. find it.

    .

  • yeah that band does have a rockout poser show band thing going on but tommy had to start somewhare. led zeppling reunion with tommy on drums what do you think?

  • @chunkmonk

    Sounds good to me.

    But I do like BOA....

  • he looks like Dom Bewer playing,,amazing

  • In 1972 I was a guitar player, who went to his 1st rock concert... After I left this concert, I became a drummer!!! Tommy, Vulcan, would be proud of your thunder...

  • I saw him do that at the New Orleans Municiple Auditorium, 1974. I believe Robin Trower opened the show.

  • No. There was legal wranglings involved when Tommy was leaving the band. He still doesn't like to talk about them (BOA). BTW, these guys obviously didn't "suck ass" if they were invited to play at one of the largest concerts on the planet, California Jam. If you're a younger person you may be clueless about it. I hope not. cheers ~

  • i met tommy aldridge at a clinic and he wasn't embarrased at all to mention his time in this band so i don't know what your talking about.

you dont have to care, but Shawn Lane was one of the greatest guitarists that ever lived

and he played with these guys in the late 70's.

even if you dont give a shit about this band you should atleast check out shawn lane.

  • what the fuck are you talking about, have you forgotten about shawn lane???

  • ummm.....Travis who???

  • Phenomenal drummer. Good solo. Pretty much the exact same one he's played in BOA, Ozzy Osbourne's band, &Whitesnake, & Ted Nugent's band. Guess he see's no reason to change it.

  • hey he looks the same age then as he does now lmao
