@CarlMariaWeber Actually, the Tran. Étude nº4 came from this Symphony. Liszt composed the orchestra version, then he made all the 12 Études, and transcripted it to the piano.
@rafaman96 Well, the 1837 (or 1838) version of the 12 etudes existed before the Symphony poems did, and many of these themes are found in the early version of the etude. So, the piano version did (sort of) come first.
@OrangeSodaKing We will probably never know what his intentions were with the piece initially. He might have had sketches of either before the other was published. Let us listen and play the music - and enjoy it, of course!
Man, I've been looking for this same interpretation during so long. I had it in a collection of music i lost a few years now, I can recognize it wherever I listen it. Thing is I do not remember who was the conductor and what orchestra was that . Antal Dorati ? Bernard Haitink ? Gewandhaus of Leipzig ? Wiener Philarmoniker ?. Could you facilitate that data ?. Thanks.
Thank you very much to "OverFjell" for this wonderful Mazeppa version (Haitink, London Philarmonic). Liszt music is different and bewitchs our senses. I like the rythms, timpanies and brasses. With Liszt Les Préludes and No 7 Beethoven´s symphony, this was the first classical work I listened when I was 11 (more or less). The slow theme at 4:11 and 5:24 are very beautiful.
Simply the best, Liszt was a dark man :P, I love it, studying this piece at the moment at university and I just fell in love with that, such passion, such power...simply outstanding!!

I love this version! It makes the ride So much more sinister. There's definately more of a sense of dread.

The music is very poetic. It definitely seems like it's going through a story. It almost has that film score kinda feel to it.

Who are the performers?
The poem is, of course, great but it does not exist without the performers. That's why I think they deserve at least their names to be mentioned.
Otherwise, thanks for posting this.

Yes, It would be good to know who conductor and orchestra are...
Thanks for sharing. I love Liszt's symphonic poems, and 'Mazeppa' is one of my favourites.
