  • how can anyone not feel the blues in john mayer? hes got one of the best guitar playing feels in the world i recon

  • pretty crazy how much he can do without a single change in this whole jam.

  • To be honest, until recently I had no idea John Mayer was such a great guitarist...(I only knew of him from WFTWTC & Gravity) Guess I've been living under a rock..lol . After watching more of his performing, I'm amazed and i can't get enough of him. He's really got mad skillz, and now he's one of my top faves. Will keep watching, listening and learning.. more vids YES! ---> ;)

  • this is enough to drive any sane woman crazy. Fuuuuck he is practically is making love to the guitar!! imagine how good he must be in bed?! oh Weeeeee lol

  • @avalokitha LOL, My thought exactly. I can just imagine, he must be a...verrrry good pluck (in more ways than one) I think the vid description says it all.. ;)P

  • this videos fucking amazing. and so is his timing.

  • 1:38 good god

  • @charlesrhunt just what came through my mind dude xD

  • i think I'm in love

  • Comment removed

  • its sad but i think he will be most remembered for his pop songs instead of his composing/guitar skills.

  • @btub09 it's called commit a crime

  • He's too good...

  • All guitar players are is a bunch of jealous pussy's..just shut the fuck up and enjoy another musicians playing!!!

As a drummer i never hear of drummers cutting other drummers down...

  • Comment removed

  • @bigbearjpw thats cause all you drummers copy each other :P you cant reinvent the wheel as far as drums go; theres only so many different beats. I agree with you though haha I even "liked" your comment.

  • @bigbearjpw haha they are just pissed cause he produced mainstream music ( what isnt even bad, his pop stuff is cool too). now hes rich famous good looking AND one of the best guitar players i think that is what pisses them off...

  • !! I swear i heard ' im leavin you woman' riff in there !! im sure it was

  • @wfenio um nun bettencourt sucks. No emotion at all. No soul.

  • @srvrlz i heard it too!!! Great song

  • People who post dumb comments of any sort on this video have absolutely NO understanding of the blues. At all. The blues isn't about competition between guitarists, "stealing licks", race, being a legend, comparisions of talent, or any of the other garbage you could think of to knock this. It's the MUSIC. It's the EMOTION. It's tellng a story that people can relate to not just by copying sounds, but in their hearts. This is the blues at it's best.

  • Mayer is a very good blues player.. but as far guitarists go, I personally think Nuno Bettencourt is about the best there is.. he's got soul, funk, impeccable rythmic sense and technical virtuosity all in perfect balance.. I'd love to hear Bettencourt jam with Mayer.

  • @njdkidd1231 no, no one is greater than SRV. you're right. what i was trying to say is that Mayer is only continuing to get better and better.

  • plays the blues like a boss and got jenifer aniston in the sack.. what a boss.

  • I'm a huge fan of Hendrix & SRV and I used to think John Mayers music was really gay. That was until I worked at a venue in 2003 and saw him do a sound check for 30 mins in the afternoon before the show... just John and his drummer. His skill, talent and passion for the guitar are undeniable. I was gobsmacked and It was one of the most awe inspiring things I've ever seen, and I've been a fan ever since. I only wish I could play as well as he can.

  • skill can be reached by many people but how you incorporate that skill into different things is what separates the successful and the bitches who moan about John Mayer being unauthentic etc etc. how do you think john mayer got to where he is? I don't need no bitching to know that there's dumb fucks in this world...

  • 1:28-1:40 I hear Commit a Crime

  • Hey, please watch the videos of my band on my channel. The singing could use a little more work, but please watch us and give us some comments. Thank you!

  • it should already be settled!!! John has gotten praise from the best out there already, he is in the likes of Eric, SRV, Jimi and all with his own style slapped right in there.. whatever it is dudes got it and anyone who doesnt think so didnt really watch this video or and other videos of john slayin the guitar.. rant done srry

  • this guy has it..man..

  • Hi Everyone, Just close your eyes and listen to Mr. Mayer. Forget that he is somewhat egotistical and really does not look the part. I think that you will find that he is very well rehearsed and has paid his dues! Many thousands of hours practicing when he could have been doing what normal kids do. He's a great player and getting better! Let's give credit when credit is due! Joey Vaughan "World Blues Attack"

  • Wake up you fools. He sucks! Uli Jon Roth, Ritchie Blackmore, MIchael Schenker, Brian May, Eric Clapton, SRV, Duane Allman, Toni Iommi, Jimi Hendrix, Steve Howe, Buck Dharma, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Jimmy Page, Al Di Meola, Ronnie Montrose. These are real guitarists. John Mayer = Shit

  • @rockgod57 Mayer oozes SRV and Hendrix influences. I would not say he's as good as those guys, but he is pretty damn good. Forget that he makes pop records and just listen to the blues. He's played with Clapton and Buddy Guy and held his ground pretty well. Nobody is saying the guys you listed suck, we just think Mayor can play the blues, too. Listen to the guitar playing on some higher-quality tracks than this and you will probably agree.

  • @agt526 I couldn't agree with you more. Most of Mayer's blues licks are SRV licks, and who cares if he's not on SRV's level. He's close enough. The world could use more young musicians who play the blues like that.

On another note though, I wish instead of playing with Buddy Guy and Eric Clapton (don't get me wrong, love those guys too), he would play with guys like Taj Mahal, Corey Harris, and Dr. John!

  • @agt526 If that's the case he must have had an off night in this video. Any recomendations for higher quality tracks? I'd like to hear some.

  • @rockgod57 and ynwie

  • @rockgod57 I mean... your statement is pretty accurate

  • @RollingReunion couldnt have said it much better myself. We should be grateful we have someone still playing the blues

  • 1:20-1:36,I'm Leaving You (Commit A Crime) by of course, his idol, SRV. Not bad John, you need to do more of this!!

  • Whoever says Mayer is better than SRV is either a blind fan, or not even a guitarist, or both. Do you even listen to SRV or did you just listen to Texas Flood and think you know something? Even mayer said he can only achieve SRV's level of play and intensity for SECONDS at a time. Dont be stupid.

  • P.S. Im a huge mayer fan myself as a guitarist, which is why an ignorant comment like that is even more annoying to me.

  • @eniggma123 even renee said hes not there yet

  • mayer is better technically, srv just had a certain power to control his audience, in fact, john mayer is so much better than srv. i mean, look at all the stuff this guy knows, he can literally play any style he wants to. so shut up. end of argument.

  • @ottjakeaustin i mean, clearly you have zero knowledge of music. im a huge mayer fan, but to say mayer is better than srv is just foolish. completely foolish

  • I'm no proclaimed John Mayer fan but I gotta come to his defense...John Mayer can play the blues (I don't know about FEELING the blues) but he can definately play. And the blues is a music heavily rooted in tradition and passing on what you know to the next generation. So, as far as I'm concerned, Mayer is simply participating in the passing down of awesome American music with a bit of his own flavor and thats part of what the blues is all about.

  • @ganjisgood This is my opinion and nothing more, but John feels the blues far better than most. Just listen to this! The cheeky bends, the trills, the seamless melding of percussive syncopation with harmonic originality... TO ME, it is breathtaking. This guy is a freak.

  • Hey there, maybe some fellow guitarists can help me out with my question. Does John Mayer anchor his strumming hand when he plays guitar? I hear it's a bad habit but he doesn't seem too affected by it, but I'm a rookie so what do I know? Lol, any help is appreciated. :)

  • Arguing about professional guitarists skill is like arguing about colors. Dumb, and it's impossible to be right or wrong.

    Ron

  • @RonVermillion ... SOOO RIght! thank you!

  • @RonVermillion Thank you!

  • I don't know about you but i am sick of seeing comments comparing Mayer to Stevie Ray and then you get a stupid argument about who is the better player. Personally i like them both. I have day's when i want to watch and hear Stevie and days for other players. It's like having cheese on your sandwiches everyday you would get sick.

So look guy's get a life and grow up!

  • It is sooooo stupid to compare guitarists... it completely misses the point of music. Its about resonance not competition, and thats what causs different musicians to have different fans. I'm sorry, but whenever I see someone getting into the comparison game, it just makes them seem so amateurish to me.

  • i aint sure if guitars could orgasm but i sure did hearing this

  • John Mayers got a lot of talent. i prefer Stevie Ray Vaughan to him though. they share a lot of the same techniques, but i just think that SRV played with an unparalleled passion and fire. like i said though, Mayer's got a hell of a lot of talent and he's a great song writer.

  • You are correct but its pretty silly even comparing one of the best guitairsts in SRV to John Mayer, eventhougH John Mayer is a great guitarist and I love his music he is nowhere near SRV.

  • true. the only way they are comparable is in that they both play blues. in my opinion, mayer is more influenced by suburban music. more pop than blues. Stevie was more of a Texas Blues man as well as many inner city chicago and new orleans blues. in other words, Stevie is a true blues guitarist where as mayer is only influenced by the blues. nevertheless, he is very talented.

  • yeah absolutely there both very talented artists.

  • john Mayer is a much better guitarist than SRV because he is alive and Stevie is dead. Can you speak or right English? Are you somehow granted a magicall ability to be able see the whole body of John Mayers work as we can Stevies?

  • Obviously SRV is dead you fucking moron. Any real guitarist knows SRV is a better guitarist then Mayer. You should be slapped for saying Mayer is better. "Can you speak or right English?" That doesnt make any fucking sense. Can you please use syntax when trying to put a sentence together. You probably dont know what that means anyways. SRV has a much cleaner and smoother play on guitar then Mayer. Mayer was influenced by SRV and he is alot sloppier then SRV ever was. I still love them both.

  • its funny cuz you misspelled write as right and magical has only one l. Yoo shuld lurn to right english,

  • I agree ams914 & RLewis15 Amen!!!!

  • jesus so funky

  • can we have the rest of it please? (:

  • John Mayer rules...plain and simple!

  • lamiamano....man say what you want about this dude's talent on the blues tip...but he's also a hell of a composer/songwriter and acoustic player. He's got impeccable taste, I mean 30 million JM fans can't be wrong. I didn't dig him until I saw him play blues and he's got a voice. And...AND his personality comes through from humor to wit on that damn strat. Shit I'd get up there and go toe to toe on the guitar with him any day. But to have fun is the point, and I dig John Mayer. Good times

  • Hitler had way more that 30 million fans. They were wrong, too.

  • It's cool with me if you don't like Mayer...but that's a distasteful comment.

  • I hate it when people use Hitler as a comparison. If you think about it for more than two seconds, you will understand why it doesn't work...

  • Comment removed

  • @rockgod57 let me say this once agin. It's cool w/ me if you don't like Mayer. But that's a distasteful comment. Try reading a comment thread next time so you don't bore me with the same thing someone else replied already. Baa Baa. Sweet irony.

  • @RollingReunion i did'nt dig him untill i watched him play bold as love and the i watched this vid .. now i'm searching all over facebook for JM ...

you have got to admit the man has got talent/soul/feel- whatever you want to call it .. he can play and draw u in ... just like - santana/hendrix/peter green/muddy waters/frusciante ... xx

  • Anyone and i mean ANYONE that says john mayer doesnt shit talent, go listen to Gravity live in LA! If your brain isnt reduced to tapioca pudding after that solo then you have no soul.

  • I've had my brain redced to tapioca one too many times by the likes of Robert Johnson, Jimi Hendrix, Lightnin' Hopkins, SRV, Albert King, B.B. King, John Lee Hooker and Muddy Waters, to name a few.. but I'll take you up on that offer.

  • sends chills down my spine everytime I hear it... one of the best guitar pieces I ever heard. Thumbs up!

  • SO much controversy on this page. You guys are missing what blues is all about. I don't give a fuck who did what when, just shut your mouth and open your ears. THAT IS THE WHOLE POINT~~~

  • amen. What ever happened to people enjoying good music?

  • @ams914 amen man!

  • Well, Id there are two guys who play exactly as good as one another, and the one is really talented and didn't do shit to get better en the other isn't very talented and worked hard to get as good as he is, I appreciate the second guy more, so it's not all about talent imo.

  • butrunioigneor, you're damn right.

  • As a musician, I appreciate TALENT. Anyone that says John isnt talented is just plain stupid..I suppose your gonna call Clapton stupid for liking mayer as well....It's true there are loads of musicians that are good, better, or best, but where's the CD's? Very few bar players do anything but covers, which is about as UNoriginal as it gets...

Some people just like to cut others down, but we all know why that is...

    PEACE

  • he rips off SRV' s "I'm leaving you commit a crime" in this

  • la classe

  • fender is finnally gonna make a relic on john mayers black guitar, (The one hes playing) that thing is very worn, gonna make expensive custom shop ones, and less expensive regular fenders.

  • I've been playing for 42 years, and I think Mayer has the soul to play anything he sets his heart to..as for those bitching about stealing....

...Lemme see. ABCDEFG...I guess about everyone that ever played any instrument stole some notes from the FIRST to ever play anything...Fact is you CAN or you CAN'T...and John Mayer CAN make it TALK..

And as with anything in general, the ones that "bitch" the most usually know the least.

    Peace

  • That directed at me?? What I know about Blues music I will put against your uninformed ..cliche statements on any fucking day Brother!! There are guys as good as Mayer in bars in every city in the world. They just never got the break.

To make anymore of this guy is stupidity.

I know a 16 year old right now who would wreck John Mayer on his worst night. 16!!

  • John Mayer is so amazing. If Fender hasn't got a Signature Series Fender Stratocaster for John Mayer yet, then I don't know what they're waiting for. John Mayer deserves one just like Clapton, Vaughn.

  • ???? he's had one for YEARS!! where have you been? obiviously you don't know much~ :)

  • Anyone who says Mayer has no "signature" or "unique" sound clearly isn't listening to his playing. Yes, his playing IS an amalgam of numerous players before him, but really, whose isn't? If you've ever listened to Clapton in his early years (John Mayall, Cream, etc.) you can hear BB King, and others, peppered throughout. Everyone "steals" from everyone. John Mayer has "stolen" from a LOT of people, and that, somewhat ironically, is actually what makes his playing so unique.

  • nicely put my friend

  • How anybody couldnt enjoy this is beyond me. Haha, I love the Metheny-like hair he had going on.

  • I thought you said "How anybody COULD enjoy this..." for a second. Was about to pounce!

  • Many people feel self-important by slamming someone of stature. Here's a prime example. Mayer is a master.

  • I don't get how people don't like this. Its so fucking funky and tasteful.

I'd love to hear the bigots on here play. I bet its laughable

  • Django Reindhart would shredd john mayer's face insideout. i like john but its the facts.

  • how to compare them? John Mayer isn't jazz guitar player

  • blues and jazz are different colors in the same spectrum. Give Django a fender strat and john would shred HIS face inside out! Give John and Django an acoustic and Reindhart would win....MAYER IS STILL A GOD! CAN I GET AN AMEN!???

  • ok now I can agree.

  • diplomacy at its finest : ) hahaha

  • yea ok, django didn't even get the chance to try out a strat how could u say that is true. there are legends and god like: Andres Segovia,Django,Paco De Lucia,Chet Atkins and then there are talented musicians like John Mayer and thats all he is is a very talented musician he has not changed music, not yet. plus if u sat those 2 in a room with some strats only good music would come out of that room.

  • Mayer was the reason I bought an electric amp, an electric guitar, and love love love to play blues music. haha he just changed my musical career haha. I think in 20 years my generation will remmember John Mayer over fergie and akon. FO SHO. John Mayer has made alot of the old new and exciting again. You dont have to change the music scene to be appreciated.

PS: Django didnt die till almost 1960. He had the option : )

  • dont ever say fergie or fuckin akon again....

  • he died in 53. never mind lol. I really thought he died later. Yeah hed tear it up on a strat though : )

  • just think if u could put all the greats in one room from every generation without egos gettin in the way. it would be an explosion of creativity and fun to watch..

  • Yeah it would be great.

Unfortunately John Mayer would not be in that room.

  • AAAMEEEN !!!!

  • I am still trying to figure out why this guy is so big. In truth he has absolutely no signature of his guitar work to define him among others. All the greats from BB to Eric, SRV , Buddy, Otis Rush, Albert King, Albert Collins all have distinct sounds.

Hes like a watered down calico quilt of a lot of influenes without defining his own sound. He is just a stream of borrowed licks ...A God??? Right. Give him 5 years and see if hes even still on the radar.

  • no not a "god" more of a future legend. Man think about it... he's bringing back the blues for a lot of people. he's also introducing it to a lot of people as well. I can hear a pretty distinct sound and tone from mayer. I can also hear some pretty incredible talent. look I guess what I'm trying to say is... you don't have to love him, but you can't say he's not pretty damn good

  • Distinct??

    What the fuck!!

Yeah if ripping other people off straight up is "Distinct" I guess so.

Maybe you are really just saing DIS-STINK

    In which case I agree.

  • Nah I said distinct and I mean distinct. He has fender make his own pick-ups. They are scooped mid-range. And of course he is going to sound like SRV and Hendrix those are his idols; but saying he is ripping them off? I dunno about that.. to each their own especially with music, man, but c'mon you can't say he isn't talented.

  • What the fuck is he bringing back?? The Blues NEVER went anywhere. Its just not commercial enough. There are hundreds of players who actually sound original who make John Mayer look sick. People like Eric Gayles and Jeff Healey never got any recognition.

  • He brought the blues back to "mainstream" music because he was smart enough to appeal to the young audience with his "pop" to get on a national stage. I'm not saying in any way that he is better than those guys but he is obviously smarter. Like I said, talent is talent whether you write "Your Body is a Wonderland" or not. Plus in the words of Elvis Costello, "Talking about music is like dancing about architecture." (especially when the person your talking to is closed minded)

  • By saying he's smarter, you're assuming you know what the previous, influential musicians were trying to accomplish.

In my opinion guys like SRV would'nt want to be a well known if it meant he had to sacrifice his musical interest by playing pop music or some other crap.

  • I like that quote.

  • I got to say that artist like SRV and Clapton brougth the blues back to the hotspot. The difference is that SRV wouldn't play "pop" music because he got the blues on his heart and soul. Clapton and JM got other things besides the blues. Good thing we can enjoy them all and hear what they can bring to the music. JM got heart to play blues, no doubts. People like Joe Bonamassa lives forand by the blues. Say that JM is smart just for that, is just an opinion, not a fact.

  • Unfortunately, Jeff Healey (rip) put out lots of crappy pop music when he had the spotlight too. I did see him play on a few occasions, and he could burn a house down playing blues.

  • m not sayin he is the greatest player but i'd love to be able to play like him... if u don't like it please watch something else...

  • You guys can flame about Mayer all you want.

Bottom line is that he doesn't come looking for your opinions before he cuts records. And so far, it's serving him pretty well.

Just sit back, like the rest of us, and wish you had what it takes to play like him.

  • yet another player who is a great example of feel. just like SRV no matter the song if you play how you feel it it sounds great so all those who comment go learn history of blues and blues guitar and lear to play instead of commenting you stupid little people

  • mayer a poser???

not really, the majority of artists that have worked with him have huge respect for his guitar abilities, including eric clapton, so i wouldn't exactly call him a poser, you go and play sell out shows and have platinum records and then go call him a poser

  • Another one of you guys who thinks you have to be the greatest player of all time to have an opinion. That makes no sense at all.

And record sales? So what? The Spice Girls, Milli Vanilli and Vanilla Ice all went multi-platinum and sold out shows too. What does that have to do with anything?

  • i only like john when he plays blues, i wish he would stop playin the gay stuff and stick to this. hes such a sick blues player.

  • He's got some sick skill actually.

  • Don't judge people that are more skilled than you. Once you become better than mayer, SRV or whoever, than you can voice your opinion. Until then, I'm pretty sure what you say is worthless. Thanks. P.S. check out SOULIVE.

  • Since when do you need to be Eric Clapton to have an opinion? Quit being a little poser snob.

  • i dunno what the fuck you guys are whining about, obviously not every lick can be completely original, this guys a great blues player who happens to be inspired by the best

  • ...and guess what else? Abusive dickheads like you will have their comments removed and their user status blocked. Who's laughing now?? Hahahaha...

  • No, what's pathetic is someone who can't spell "retarded".

  • I have been seeing your comments all over these music vids on youtube...I guess the best thing that sums you up is that you called someone "retarted", but could not even spell the word right. It's a safe bet that even as you are reading this you are spelling it out in your head and getting the same answer time and again. That's irony for you. Go back to jerking off to anime and blaming your father for everything in your life.

  • ReTarted? Sounds yummy!:))

  • Mayer takes from SRV and Hendrix and crafts it into his own style. Did you ever here them do the picking that hes doing with his right hand(using his fingers). He is the only one that is keeping blues alive in the current age yet douche bags want to bash him. He is truly a genius. He made it into the music scene by writing incredibly good pop tunes then was able to still have his fans appreciate the blues. Anyone who likes blues should respect him as a great player. Claptin did..do your research

  • This guy is so overated

  • you are overrated.

  • to zoso0987: dude SRV never played a song same way twice, plus his style is hardest ever to play and pick on, and he had a wide range of mixing styles, tones, licks, sounds, and he could play and do anything with the guitar!

And the lick at 2:30 is a SRV signature, basic to you, but nobody could play it better than SRV, it's hard to master it as SRV, he was the best! If you think that SRV just played the same thing over and over, than you are retarted, cause he always used improvisations!

  • I love it when he gets so into the sounds hes creating, that he unconsciously plays with whole body.

  • i totally agree. i wish he was as "hungry" musically with his guitar as he was when he started the trio.

  • He's got some serious talent there. I think that mot of the flak he draws is because his "album music" isn't as bluesy, and he's a new guy. But if new was always bad, and we never considered anyone because they were new, we never would have gotten blues in the first place.

  • sure is a lot of bitchin and whining on here, the way I see it, he's got an audience, and you don't. He sings great, he plays great, and Eric Clapton likes him a lot, deal with it or get practicing and show us what skills you got.that outta shut u the fuck up for a few years i hope.

  • THANK YOU.

  • if he is improvising than why is he playing SRV I'm Leaving You To Commit A Crime at 1:20 and a lick from Lenny (El Macombo verison) at 2:30 SRV and Buddy Guy solos are in the moment flowing through them Mayer is just playing a bunch of licks he memorized.

  • so that SRV lick, for instance. You think he never played it before the El Macombo. SRV is a god, but he reused licks, just like any other guitarist. Its all a matter of flowing in and out of them well, wich SRV was very good at.

  • and dude, the lick at 2:30 is SUCH a basic lick. It is just a standard blues lick play with and SRV type tone, so you are reminded of Lenny.

  • Yeah. It REALLY matters whether or whether not it's a basic or complicated lick.

NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO

    It does not!

What matters is that he can make it sound good and interesting. Buddy Guy and John Mayer are really good friends, been on tours together, so naturally Buddy's great playing must have kind of rubbed off on Mayer.

    Please stop your wining.

BTW: SRV and John Mayer had the same guitar teacher.

  • Did you even read the comment I was resonding to? I am defending John by saying that he didnt steal those licks. Pay more attention please.

  • you are mistaken, SRV never had lessons, they have the same roadie (takes care of their equipment)...... research it before you say something false. by the way, SRV will always be atleast 100 times better than Mayer because he has the humbleness and not some kind of kid that's full of himself (John Mayer)... i'm directing the latter part of this comment to you kent, just want to post it on the video with just one comment

  • kent was referring to hendrix.

  • that pretty much owns everyone that talks shit about mayer OH YEAH HIS GUITAR TECH IS SRV'S OLD GUITAR TECH

  • BUDDY GUY IS THE GREATEST ! PERIOD

  • Despite what everyone says, I think there's something good to be said for his tone and phrasing.

  • they're called "rakes", not cats being dragged across strings. sounds good to the rest of us. :)

  • you are an idiot. enough said.

  • mayer's fucking awesome! Enough said.

  • mayer is shit

  • Mayer is THE shit!

  • I love how everyone always says he isn't a real guitarist because he isn't coming up with his own stuff or his own sounds. That is completely ignorant. Everyone who plays guitar idolizes a genre of music or a single guitarist. Hendrix didn't just pop out his mothers womb and started playing the blues. He got into the blues and did what other blues guitarists were doing at the time. He had to get is inspiration from somewhere.

  • Mayer better than Hendrix? haaha...no way!Mayer a blues man? Well that would make Rory Gallagher turn in his grave! If only Rory was still alive..
