Hello (: excuse my english please i'm german ^^ i want to knoe what do you gibe your rats on you finger when they were climbed the tower of cans ^^ 'cause i'll get 2 rats in march and want to train with them too :'D
I REALLY REALLY want two little ratties but I can't convince my parents to let me buy them! I have EVERYTHING planned out; all the supplies needed as well as the costs..! I even made a packet on everything you need, need to know, and why they are good pets. My parents are animal lovers, too. What can I do? PLEASE HELP ME(: Thanks.
@shubhs4frndz I'm so sorry man. I have three girls of my own. Ratties are just the sweetest and it's so unfortunate how short they live. :( I hope the others are live and well?
this really did make me go awwwww, i want a rat soooo much but my mum says no she dont like the tails so any advice or is there a rat without a tail or with a small tails ( i am aware it sound ridiculous)
@PopShOt360 you can but tailless rats, they may cost more or you may have to go farther away for them. It may depend on where you live.. Google them :)
I've had hamsters and, if they were of the same sex, they were fighting. And if they were male and female, they bred at a crazy pace. I couldn't have more than one in the same cage if I didn't want that they to fight or to have children by non-stop
Rats really are one of the best pets you can have! ^^
Too bad that my mother doesn´t really like them (she thinks they are cute as long as they aren´t in her house...) and my dad only sees them as food for his snakes... I´m seriously thinking about moving out as soon as I have enough money just to be able to have rats again (I once had four but they had to stay at a friends house...)
this reminds me of my little girl who was ironically named delilah. she made the best pet ive ever had and i would love another. the only problem ive had with rats is either they have respiratory problems or tumors. how can i avoid this for the next little girls i get?
This is wonderful. I'm actually sitting on my bed watching it with my rat Meeka on my shoulder (/in my hair) and my other two rats Mogli and Panda sleeping on the comforter =) I'm especially touched to see a male truly loving his rats...seems like the vast majority of rat owners (at least the ones who are most vocal about it) are female. Thank you for this lovely video =) Made me think of all my little snugglebugs who have since passed on <3
Beautiful rats you have. Any tips for snipping their nails? I got a female rat (:D She's sweet), and she absolutely hate gettingher nails trimmed, and I hate getting scratch marks around my neck/shoulders when we play. :[
@richrichrichism :-( indeed. But why not making a pet out of it? I don't know; I just couldn't harm a mouse. Saw a dead one in the garden one day, it was so cute.
Diseases or not diseases, it's not their fault. Anyway. :-)
Ive had rats before. The only time they truly bonded with me is when i had single ones. When i got two sisters, they bonded to each other and hated me.. I had a single for 2 years..then i felt bad for her not having a rat companion..so i introduced her to a new baby..she ended up killing it.
I have/had two rats one name is smidgen who is my 1 year old female fancy rat and the one that just passed away was named rocket who was a male and only 1 month of age and he was dumbo eared rat they were and are the cutest things I have ever seen I love rats
Thank you for the wonderful video of your girls! I am a middle aged woman and I love rats! They are the best pets. They are so sweet, affectionate, and intelligent. And like you say, they are actually very clean. The only downside is that their lifespan is usually about two years.
Train him and name him Algernon, make him super smart, through recorded lab studies. Make him extremely intelligent. Everyday, to eat, he'll have to go through puzzles to reach it.
Awesome! Rats and mice are just as curious, tender, and loving of life as any cat or dog. I have had rescued mice, rats, cats, and dogs and I can attest to this from first hand experience. If you appreciate mice or rats, please oppose the cruel and unnecessary use of rats and mice in laboratories whenever possible. This science-based medical organization explains the why behind the scientific invalidity of animal research: afma-curedisease. org
@mmissinglink I worked in a lab and, whenever we had to kill a rat (and I did that myself, usually with a guillotine, because my research used the central nervous system and I couldn't kill them using carbon dioxide or some anesthesic) we made sure it was a day everyone would perform an experiment using a rat. So we just had to kill one animal to make different researches...
@andrebrait less unnecessary killing is better than more unnecessary killing and I'm glad that you chose to spare the lives of more mice but my point is, animal experimentation is still unnecessary killing based on psuedo-scientific assumptions.
@mmissinglink Unfortunately, we have no option other than test on them. Otherwise, we'd have to test on humans, which is not more ethical than testing on them... btw, nobody cares about the roaches and flies
@andrebrait Actually, that's not true at all. There are far more ethical and scientifically effective (predictability) ways to understand what effects compounds, chemicals, drugs, and
invasive procedures have on humans than to test (relying on poorly predictable nonhuman models) on non-humans. I encourage you to learn the facts here: afma-curedisease. org
@mmissinglink Not true at all? Everyday something new is discovered that renders these methods you said useless, and that's discovered thanks to these guys. Man, I love my rats, even the biter one. I would NEVER kill something I could kept alive by doing some computer simulation. For example, what would be the model you propose for me to test how the PnTX 2-6 toxin acts in the central nervous system? None, I say. There's just nothing. Cells aren't enough, we need a whole system sometimes.
@mmissinglink There's just nothing I can do to test glutamate liberation on axonic terminals but cut a rat's brain out, take living synaptosoms that still work out of it, and use a fluorimeter to test the liberation across different levels, settings and stuff... And predictability? Not even Physics is totally predictable... human testing before even knowing how a drug affects the system? AND you miss one part: to have a drug approved you have to know EXACTLY how it acts, not an approximation.
@andrebrait Sadly, you are wrong and you are not thinking critically enough before you write because you are making my case for me when you write "to have a drug approved you have to know EXACTLY how it acts, not an approximation" Knowing how drug A acts in a rat, squid, or dog system is anything BUT predictable to how drug A acts in the human system. The predictability when using V, W, X, Y, or Z animal model is as accurate as rolling the dice in virtually all examples..
@mmissinglink YEs, but knowing how a drug affects their systems in ways we knows work similarly in ours prevents testing dangerous drugs on humans. AND knowing how a drug works on a mammal gives a lot more clues of how it will work in our system than the squid, or a reptile, or a bird. AND that's why we still test on humans, isn't it? But as far as a lot of characteristics we are similar enough to use rats as test subjects. And would you mind if I asked you if you've been in a research yourself?
@andrebrait That's exactly the problem andre, animal models aren't good predictors at all for a whole host of reasons. This is established when we look at the facts. But instead of rewriting them all, that's why I suggested for you (or anyone interested) to spend time on afma-curedisease. org. The facts are laid out there quite thoroughly.
Awww i got my rat saterday just gone, hes sooo cute, at first he was really scared of my but now whenever i put my hand in his cage he will sniff me, sometimes lick me and give me a little nibble and let me stroke him.....he still wont let me pick him up yet but i spose it will just take time for him to get more use to me. Cant wait to start teaching him some tricks. Hoping to get another male rat soon so he has somebody else to play with. =]
this is the fourth time m asking ..wen do your rats sleep?Mine sleeps in the day n awake at night....N hw cme your rats are soo active mine is a lazy one who never ever jumps or runs.... :O
Hey everyone I have a new group on facebook for rats ..its called wrapped around our rats tail you can post anything rat related like pics questions and more ! :)
I've had two pet rats for a while now, but they were not used to human contact until I got them. One of them is faily sociable, only bites to know if you're food and stuff, still doesn't like to be carried, but I'm working on that.
On the other hand, the older one is a biter. He has bitten me twice, really hard, and I never gave him another chance. Otherwise, he seems sociable. But even when he comes to my hand for food, he bites really hard if I let him. Can you give me any advice?
How does he behave when he bites you? Does he draw blood? Does he look to be staring at you before the bite, leap forward bite and then get back? Or hang on? Aggressive bites really hurt. But sometimes rats also like biting things like pens and fingers, and can sometimes bite pretty hard.
Here is some more info: ratballs(dot)com/RatTails/Tails059(dot)html although I'd break down the aggressive bite section into defensive and offensive.
@nervousneuron Yes, he mostly draws. While my other rat just nip my hand, thinking I have food, and, when he notices I don't, he plays with me or just accept a little head-scratching. But this biter, well... the first time he had bitten me it was my fault, I startled him, but he's ok with me as long as I don't place my hand anywhere where he can bite it. He eventually comes for food, but mostly he comes to my hand and bites it, drawing blood, and I dont know why. And thanks for the link.
i really want a rat, ive wanted one for over a year now.. but my parents yell at me every time i tell them and they wont listen to anything i have to say. i probably know everything there is to know about pet rats. but none of tht matters to my parents. they are still convinced all rats are just like sewer rats. could u advise me with some help please??? thank you
K onada question wen do your rats sleep?Mine sleeps in the day n awake at night....N hw cme your rats are soo active mine is a lazy one who never ever jumps or runs.... :O
@ecojojo99 Females are more hyper and males are more mellow. Not sure why exactly. The females aren't hard to handle they just want to explore, maybe looking for a mate as they are very good mothers. Once you've bred a female she becomes addicted to birthing babies.
I have a male albino named Malfoy and he not only lets me kiss him, he kisses back! :D Pippin never lets me and Frodo sometimes does...if I let him climb on my head.
my girls passed away from mammorary tumors,There was only 1 vet who was willing to operate on rats but 300 an hour plus 110 to have them spayed. I was only 14 and 15, I tryed saving up and i was halfway to 410 till one of my girls Blanca died. I was too late. It progressed faster than what I could save up so I spoiled My baby girl Stars till the day her body was growing cold and she still tryed climbing on my shoulder. How much I miss them :'[ I'm inspired by my girls to become a Rat Specialist
K onada question wen do your rats sleep?Mine sleeps in the day n awake at night....N hw cme your rats are soo active mine is a lazy one who never ever jumps or runs.... :O
K onada question wen do your rats sleep?Mine sleeps in the day n awake at night....N hw cme your rats are soo active mine is a lazy one who never ever jumps or runs.... :O
I have a question and I'd be happy to receive any advice. I've recently acquired a rat, and decided to keep it as a pet. The thing is that it is not used to being handled and picked up, although it doesn't seem to bite. When I pick it up, it tries to get away, but doesn't bite me (And I think that's a good thing). Any advice I can get on how to tame it? Thank you
Actually the rat I have looks exactly like the ones in this video, so I've probably picked a good place to ask lol
@kikikikia Good way to start is to put some sort of bedding material in there that smells of you, like an old T-shirt, this gets the rat used to your smell. Then try giving it treats, you can start off with peanutbutter on a spoon and little by little hold the spoon closer to the end so your hand is getting closer, till you'll be able to let the rat lick it off your finger. You can also try this with choc/yoghurt drops but be patient and never try to 'shove' it at the rat.
I'm not sure if he's scared of people, because he will sniff me and try to climb on my leg when he's out of the cage. Only problem is that he doesn't like being picked up, but I'll take your advice. Hopefully in time it will be more like the rats in this video lol
shubhs4frndz , your rats are lovely! I have three - Nikko (a boy), and Lexi and Lily - a set of adopted sisters. Adding the others I've had that makes 11 rats over the years. I don't think I could ever be without them now. It's very rare for me to travel without at least one, and that only happens if the hotel doesn't allow pets. Thanks so much for sharing your lovely pictures and video!
i'm so sorry guys i can't reply to all of your comments as i there are just so many comments...i'll reply to some important ones..if you want a reply/answer then leave another comment...
@shubhs4frndz Why i don't like rats well infact i don't like anything thats not human and to be honest im not too keen on humans much either. But as for rats and mice they scare the life out of me and are by far the worst ceature in this world. The best thing surely would be for the whole world to agree the time is now to wipe them out as soon as possible

Hey.
Can you give me any advice?
andrebrait 3 weeks ago
@andrebrait
@andrebrait
How does he behave when he bites you? Does he draw blood? Does he look to be staring at you before the bite, leap forward bite and then get back? Or hang on? Aggressive bites really hurt. But sometimes rats also like biting things like pens and fingers, and can sometimes bite pretty hard.
Here is some more info: ratballs(dot)com/RatTails/Tails059(dot)html although I'd break down the aggressive bite section into defensive and offensive.
nervousneuron 2 weeks ago
@nervousneuron Yes, he mostly draws. While my other rat just nip my hand, thinking I have food, and, when he notices I don't, he plays with me or just accept a little head-scratching. But this biter, well... the first time he had bitten me it was my fault, I startled him, but he's ok with me as long as I don't place my hand anywhere where he can bite it. He eventually comes for food, but mostly he comes to my hand and bites it, drawing blood, and I dont know why. And thanks for the link.

Is it true that female rats are harder to handle than male rats?
ecojojo99 3 weeks ago
@ecojojo99 Females are more hyper and males are more mellow. Not sure why exactly. The females aren't hard to handle they just want to explore, maybe looking for a mate as they are very good mothers. Once you've bred a female she becomes addicted to birthing babies.

@APT420:
I seconds that.
Female rats can't just stand still.
Phonolith303 3 weeks ago
@APT420 maybe simply because females are in general more social

my girls passed away from mammorary tumors,There was only 1 vet who was willing to operate on rats but 300 an hour plus 110 to have them spayed.

Nice rats!
Thank you
Actually the rat I have looks exactly like the ones in this video, so I've probably picked a good place to ask lol
kikikikia 4 weeks ago
@kikikikia Good way to start is to put some sort of bedding material in there that smells of you, like an old T-shirt, this gets the rat used to your smell. Then try giving it treats, you can start off with peanutbutter on a spoon and little by little hold the spoon closer to the end so your hand is getting closer, till you'll be able to let the rat lick it off your finger. You can also try this with choc/yoghurt drops but be patient and never try to 'shove' it at the rat.
Also, talk to it. :)
MsBearTank 4 weeks ago
@MsBearTank Thanks for the tips :)
