Pop music is condemned because it is soft and simple. There's 3-4 chords, usually has very tame lyrics, something that can be easily played on the radio and has no real substance behind it. There's no meaning or emotion, it's something you don't have to listen to to understand it.

If you like that kind of music, cool, but that's why IMO pop music is hated by music "snobs".

Tom Waits is master of his own style, Mark Lanegan is best in his own interpretations. Comparing these two artist, and favoritism one of them is at least a mistake. I'm a great fan of Soulsavers with Mark Lanegan, and also a big fan of Tom Waits's works.

The song is yet another great Mark Lanegan classic, but the video with the creepy Texas Chainsaw Massacre house, and masked serial killers and ghosts of their victims or whatever is going on in there does not fit the mood of the music at all. Lanegan is not a goth or death rock musician. This music coupled with this imagery is like a ketchup and peanut butter sandwich.

@jazzavantgarde This song is about digging one's grave through obsessive dedication to excess. It's not about spooky haunted houses, serial killers, ghosts and roses with teeth. It's a nice video, but it was obviously done by people who do not understand what Mark Lanegan is all about. Set to Bauhaus or some other goth or doom type band it would be perfect. Lanegan's imagery is more along the lines of cheap motel rooms and bars, deserts, down-and-outers, junkies and whiskey.
