  • lol he messed up. thats a first.

  • @Jack458111 Well, actually if you look up the video "Caprice #1 at Rocky Grass" which is actually the tune, When Mandolin's Dream from his technique DVD, he messes up the run at the end. You see it on his face to.....

  • this just turned me onto streetwise. very eye opening. beautiful song

  • i loved this.

  • This is a very beautiful song that matches in so many ways how depressing DeWaynes's suicide is in the documentry Streetwise was. Dewayne Pomeroy hanged himself in July 1984.

    Check out Streetwise.

  • > OMG.. . he hit a wrong note at 0:52 !!!!!!!

If a friend of yours described something very sad, you wouldn't criticize her for momentarily choking up.

When people abandon themselves to the emotion of a song, sometimes they don't play perfectly. Feelings take precedence over technique, and that becomes part of their expression.

Some people strive to play like machines, but music is just as much about expressing our imperfections as anything else.

  • OMG.. . first time I've heard Chris screw up! he hit a wrong note at 0:52 !!!!!!! Half step off! OOOPS,, didn't reach far enough.

  • @fetymann The only reason you've never heard him mess up before is because you aren't good enough to. No musician can play anything perfectly. There's always some kind of mistake, whether it be due to timing or hitting a wrong note. That's what adds expression to the music. If it was perfect, Chris Thile would not be half as amazing as he is. It isn't about not making mistakes. If it was, music would be an extremely boring business.

  • I'm not good enough to? what? I've heard enough of Thile and NC's live stuff to hear some fubs here and there. I'm not saying Chris never screws up, I'm just surprised that he did on a solo piece which I'm sure he has played hundreds of times. He just wasn't concentrating enough at that time. Sometimes staring down at the frets your eyes can cross and you lose track of where your fingers are. He has lots of music in his head, so maybe he just pictured the fret position wrong this one time.

  • No, you're not a good enough musician to realize just how many mistakes he does make. It doesn't matter how many times you've played a song, there are always mistakes. Without fail. No musician in the history of mankind has ever or will ever play a perfect piece, it simply cannot be done. A lot more mistakes are made than you realize.

  • believe me, I've listened to a lot of NC, and know their songs inside and out. I can tell when things are off. I didn't say Chris was perfect. I took 11 years of piano lessons since 2nd grade and went through the school band and all. I can play by ear quite well. I know music more than you think I do and know how to listen. I'm 30 now and compose music on the piano. Anyway, this is going nowhere, I'm not going to waste my time, end of discussion. Bye

  • Think what you will. You still cannot argue with the obvious fact that, unless the mistake made is major, commenting about it is a completely pointless endeavor.

  • @fetymann yeah! bizarre. guess he needs to get back in the practice room

  • Great music and great playing.

  • God this is such a beautiful tune!
