At least one of the Kit Kat girls is a boy, if memory serves. I think, don't quote me on this, that in the opening credits, there's a man in the dressing room getting make-up on.

What a lot of people mean is that the Broadway show, and many of the revivals, skits, etc, feature one girl, one boy in drag, and the Emcee.

It's the "tradition" I've been told.

The interpretations of the role are so different. I think I like Alan Cumming's better, personally, he sort of embodied the 'den of sin' completely in his lascivious and sometimes darkly threatening behavior. Although, after a while, you do sort of get a little sick of all the crotch-grabbing.

Remember this is post WWI when the Christian idea of one man living with one woman was forced to change. There were so many widows from the war that often women had to move in with their sisters or friends to survive and it became common for a man to co-habitate with two ladies.

Which makes this is tragi-comedy at its finest.
