I take 400mg a day and when I get my blood tested it's always just under the threshold, I've even tried taking 5 before the blood test on an empty stomach and still just at the lowest exceptible level. I suffer from server depression, which never started until I started taking it. terrible drug, I love the fact that it causes your gums to grow over your teeth and they make a chewable form. That right there is horifically stupid. Smoke some good cannabis indica before bed and you'll be fine
I had to start taking it after doctors found calcification in my brain which came from the radiation I had when just a baby (I was born with Rhadomyasarcoma in the left paroded gland). They started me with 200mg, but after a blood test, he dropped it to 160mg.
my mom got dilanton toxisity she in the hospital right now im 14 and have 2 little brothers my mom has severe depresion shes and epileptic i cant afford to lose my mom shes all i got besides my aunt
MasterSpade, it should be criminal what doctors did to you prescribing such heavy meds doses, not only of Dilantin.
Re Dilantin, I can't imagine why doctors give more than 300 mg Dilantin ever.
I OD'd on Dilantin at 400 mg a day. My blood levels kept rising and they withdrew the med suddenly. That withdrawal almost killed me. The PDR says NOT to withdraw it suddenly.
But low-dose Dilantin is one of the safest meds around. 300 mg a day made my life worth living. Today I take only 100 mg a day.
MasterSpade.....I am feeling for you!!! My son too was on the maximum dose given. It is very difficult to deal with. I am glad the medication is working for you splashcat! 8-) Unfortunately medications work different on everyone. In my son's case it had it's negative effects. The human brain does not heal. Brain damage is permanent. The younger you are the better your chances your brain can compensate for the loss by using other parts within it! I hope all live a full and happy life!
My son was critically injured in a car accident in 2005. He had a tramatic brain injury/with seizures and was put on Dilantin. Doctors said he would have to take it for the rest of his life. I am so glad to say the doctors weined him off the stuff last year...and he's doing great. Before my son was in the accident, he was so happy go lucky....full of life. Dilantin stole that part of him and frequently I watched him cry. Today he is back to his old self.
Maybe his Dilantin was too strong a dose. Or maybe his depression healed as his brain healed. I wonder about his Dilantin dose because I take a single, daily, 100mg Kapseal of Dilantin to better my mood, and have since 1998. It helps me a lot.
For a book about Dilantin for non epileptic needs, A Remarkable Medicine Has Been Overlooked, by Jack Dreyfus, tells the benefits that low-dose Dilantin gave him.
I'm on another medicine, Keppra, and the Keppra's having better effects. My dumbass doctor still insists I have to take the dilantin though. Next appointment I have, I'll take my pills along, hog tie the son of a bitch and shove the pills down his throat. THAT'LL teach him to give me an overdose.
I've been on this fucking shit for almost all of my life for grand-mal seizures. It's made my life a living hell. My last doctor decided "she's not on enough, we'll up the dosage. . ." and I had to go to the emergency room, where they figured out "she's got dilantin poisoning; someone gave this woman an overdose." GEE, I WONDER HOW IN THE FUCK THAT HAPPENED?!
Thanks to this shit: 1: I've always had a depression problem but the medicine's made it worse- and 2: my short term memory's fucked up.
Epilepsy, took 400-500mg dilantin daily since 1985. Last two months have been nightmare vertigo. Not just dizzy, WIPED. can't stand. No focus, can't read, slurred speech, suicidal. Took blood test and doctor says "STOP! dilantin level is sky high. Stop the dilantin. Drink lots of fluids" In less than a day I'm straight. fully functional, walking around and reading clearly. BUT sceptical. Gotta have it. or will have events. Never heard of this effect from any of my Epileptic acquaintances.
I was on Dilantin because of Epilepsy caused by a head injury at age 13. Doctors, being the DRUG DEALERS THEY ARE, had me first on Dilantin. I was still getting seizures....their solution?? MORE MEDICINE! They had me taking 3 pills 3 times a day at the maximum dosage. That didn't work, so.....you guessed it....MORE Medicine. They then gave me Neurontin, Depakote, and Lamictal!! All at the maximum Dosage!!!
My seizures only got worse, as did the side effects! My seizures went from 26, to 91!!!!
@MasterSpade omg i feel you my mom was hit in the head by a soft ball at age 13 she in the hospital right now couse of dilanton toxisity and im only 14 im realy worried about her shes all i got and i have 2 little brothers im so afraid i sometimes get worried she might not make it i just called the ambulance before they got here she stopped breathing then i flipped her on her back and she tok a big gasp of air im so scared right now

My doctors had me taking that POISON for what was at that time, over half my life!!
Because of that stupid medication, I have among other things, Severe Depression, fits of rage, and worse of all, I can't remember ANYTHING!!!
Before Dilantin, I had a PHOTOGRAPHIC MEMORY, now I can't remember anything!!
When I asked my Doctor at that time why he never told me of the side effects, he responded "You never asked." Can you believe that??????

MasterSpade, why did they have you take Dilantin, and what dose?
Low-dose Dilantin improves my memory and thinking skills, and evens out my mood.
Been taking it since 1998 and love it, a single 100mg Kapseal a day.
Low-dose Dilantin is considered an anti-aging drug, as well. There's lots of good stuff about it on the web.
