The Hollywood Palace was one of the best variety entertainment shows in the 60's. I think that just about anyone who was anyone was on the show; Buffalo Springfield, Mamas & Papas, Byrds, Etc. Great show. They don't make em like this anymore

The ironic thing about Cass singing a version of this song is the original lyrics insisted rock and roll music was shallow compared to folk which was P,P&M's style. The original lyrics specifically picked on "The Mamas and the Papas." This version celebrates the artists it mentions while the original was a rather mean spirited satire.

I just don't ever remember seeing Sammy Davis Jr on stage without a cigarette now that I think of it. It was a sign of cool back then.

Speaking of Sammy he was quite a guy--extremely talented--fine voice--, comfortable on stage, and strong minded to withstand the prejudice of the day. He truly paved the way for his race and I hope it's appreciated. Always loved Sammy's performances. RIP Sammy Davis Jr. and thank you.

wendy - Sammy's "cool" cigarettes are what eventually killed him. As for his "withstanding" racism, what choice did he have? He was certainly in a better position than a dish-washer in East L.A. It's a tad easier to "withstand" racism when you're a millionaire several times over.

As for him being a "great guy", he had girlfriends as young as 16 years old which, he almost went to jail for. He was constantly in debt, an alcoholic and was a control freak. Most of his children hate him.

Cass has been paired with some greats, even though this one was more of a comedy bit. I usually find NOTHING from the '60s odd or wierd because I'm so used to seeing all this type of stuff. BUT, it is funny that hits of the day were performed in Vegas Medley style on some of these shows. Could you imagine a variety show today doing that?
