So I just turned 18.....and i'm realizing performances like this are rare these days. Which is really starting to make me sad cause this is what music SHOULD be....but we're losing it. If it's not gone already.....
Check out Sammy smoking through the song, then casually dropping the cigarette and snuffing it out with his foot while he danced - This is what "back in the day" means!
In the heyday of Twiggy and the ultra-thin supermodels, here was Cass Elliot. A big beautiful woman just bursting with talent and humor. She made no apologies for who she was and didn't have to! She was right at home singing alongside the biggest stars of the day. Check out her duet here on YT with Andy Williams. She was amazing!
Here's how crappy things have got today. Cass Elliot would probably not make it through the first round on any crappy talent show today because of her weight.
Putting aside the debate on weather PPM or Sammy or Cass or the mamas & the Papas are cool or not.....This appears to be to be a very boring lackluster performance by 2 massively talented artists...and that's a shame!
I thought they dig "Rock & Roll Music"? LOL they changed all the lyrics to reflect Soul & R&B singers but what a classic performance..... I loved watching it........
@SEVFEST A groove is a groove, whether it's rock, soul, hillbilly or western. What is _not_ groovy is the version by Peter, Paul and Mary. PPM were so overrated and overplayed. they were assembled, not discovered. Kinda like the Monkees, except the Monkees were much cooler.
@regusted ....... respectfully I disagree Peter Paul & Mary were a very talented trio and their version (The original version) which was co written by PAUL was the best (in fact better than this rewritten lyrics version. You don't have to be _(GROOVY)_ to be good, they were a folkie sound for my generation whether they were assembled or discovered. ps I liked Cass Elliot alot (in fact I met her in '69) but this song was NOT meant to be sung in this fashion.
The Hollywood Palace was one of the best variety entertainment shows in the 60's. I think that just about anyone who was anyone was on the show; Buffalo Springfield, Mamas & Papas, Byrds, Etc. Great show. They don't make em like this anymore
I've never seen Cass so free. It's like so comfortable with the way she looks. Incidentally, it would have been cool for her to answer "I'm Jewish and I'm proud"!
@spagandtuna moep :D thats why music is just music, no matter how you play it. "Versions" is a creation of the music industry^^ sell the same song twice....
@spagandtuna Peter Paul and Mary were a phony band who were assembled at an audition. Made for tv folk-pop. I'm not saying they didn't have talent. It's just there was so much other groovy stuff at the time that was much cooler.
@regusted You are so ignorant. Far from being made for tv (what, three variety show appearances, once on Jack Benny, once the MG on What's My Line), these were folk-pop artists who ALSO enjoyed the respect of core members of the FOLK MUSIC REVIVAL and were considered the Weavers' children by the Weavers themselves! Ask Pete Seeger what he thought of them and then hush. They were comitted social activists and never sacrificed integrity in pursuit of commercial success. So hush fool!
Marvelous performance by Cass and Sammy "Davies." BTW, I always thought he was Jewish...never knew Mr Davies was actually British. Amazin' what one can learn on the Tube!
@DreamsCumTrue469 ... Sammy Davis converted to Judaism... but even if that were not the case, being Jewish and being British are not mutually exclusive. "Here come da judge!!" Legends BOTH!
CAss is the best singer ever! along with Karen Carpenter, POINT BLANK, I wish music of today could be this good, nowadays singers cant even sing and they make millions!!!! I DON"T GET IT! but anyway, the 60's is the best time for music! music meant something then, and people had REAL talent!
The ironic thing about Cass singing a version of this song is the original lyrics insisted rock and roll music was shallow compared to folk which was P,P&M's style. The original lyrics specifically picked on "The Mamas and the Papas." This version celebrates the artists it mentions while the original was a rather mean spirited satire.
@Daybreaq: The original did not seem mean-spirited at all. I always heard the song as a delightful celebration. I think it's a 21st century sensibility that makes people tend to see meanness and criticism in every possible place and never question whether that sense of meanness lives in the message or the receiver.
@Daybreaq No PP&M have consistently denied that and made it clear it was a tribute to their friends. they knew everyone they sang about in that song and were friends with them.
I just don't ever remember seeing Sammy Davis Jr on stage without a cigarette now that I think of it. It was a sign of cool back then.
Speaking of Sammy he was quite a guy--extremely talented--fine voice--, comfortable on stage, and strong minded to withstand the prejudice of the day. He truly paved the way for his race and I hope it's appreciated. Always loved Sammy's performances. RIP Sammy Davis Jr. and thank you.
wendy - Sammy's "cool" cigarettes are what eventually killed him. As for his "withstanding" racism, what choice did he have? He was certainly in a better position than a dish-washer in East L.A. It's a tad easier to "withstand" racism when you're a millionaire several times over.
As for him being a "great guy", he had girlfriends as young as 16 years old which, he almost went to jail for. He was constantly in debt, an alcoholic and was a control freak. Most of his children hate him.
This was a good remake of the original. They changed the lyrics to be about soul singers, which is great. But I would have loved to hear Cass sing about The Mamas & The Papas as in the original Peter, Paul & Mary version!!
hey I'm 25, and I love this stuff. I still like all the huge stage productions we get today...but I think performance like this takes real talent, which (sorry britney) isn't around much today
I have enjoy that. It's a shame that Cass Elliot's life has cut short. I hate to say this if she should of slim down. She could of life form then and life. What a watse of life.
And yes, I agree. Check it out, they can hold your attention just with, like, ya know, singing. They don't need fireworks and 500 background dancers. (And, even more impressive, they actually SANG instead of just mouthing to recordings!)
@thgil567 Well, since this version of the song completely invalidates the meaning of the original song, this is fairly meaningless. The original was all about how rock and roll music didn't have much meaning and was just music without lyrics worth any value.
@notthatbasic Not exactly; the message was how the r n' r music lyrics weren't as "moving" as the folk music messages were (to PP&M), but that that was ok because the music was so great ... which hardly renders it "meaningless".
Variety shows are sadly a lost art today in the age of music videos & cable television.Sammy Davis Junior & Cass Elliot had incredible chemistry & they're still entertaining everybody up above.
Cass has been paired with some greats, even though this one was more of a comedy bit. I usually find NOTHING from the '60s odd or wierd because I'm so used to seeing all this type of stuff. BUT, it is funny that hits of the day were performed in Vegas Medley style on some of these shows. Could you imagine a variety show today doing that? I guess it means that the music back then MEANT MORE. Today the "hits" come and go so fast you've forgotten what was popular by year's end!
thats not nice schwoogie.. it is sad that she was big in size b/c it resulted in her death. she had such a talented voice and was beautiful inside and out. and i can't believe SD JR. smokes when he sings!
Funny to hear Mama Cass doing this song, originally a Peter, Paul and Mary hit from '67 that made fun of the Mamas and th Papas (though here they changed the reference from the Mamas to Ike & Tina Turner).
Billyjackass at least I don't drink my own bath water. What a boring smartass you'd be, 'sophisticated non linear humor' what a tosser. Asking about Cass' dress size was being a smartarse and you know it. Get a life you useless turd.
Hirdy, you are a modest little person, with much to be modest about. Hirdy, I know you has never been known to use a word that might send a reader to the dictionary. Hirdy, your biggest problem is you have delusions of adequacy.
'I know you has never..' If YOUR desire is to be 'adequate' you must do better than that jackoff. Attempting to 'send people to the dictionary' How odd and how correct was I in my assumption that you are a tosser? Have another drink you deadbeat. Delusions of adequacy, update your putdowns. Have not heard that one for years. By the way prick, I'm far better than adequate and not in the least modest. Modesty is for losers like you you bore.
I know what a jack off is (its two words dumbo); I know what a dead beat is (again two words you home schooled Bush loving twit); and I know what a prick is....but Hirdy, what is a tosser? You are simply a shiver with no spine to run up.
I won't dispute the term 'jackoff' being one or two words when used as a noun with you because it is clearly something about which you have great expertise. Deadbeat is one word, as for the meaning of tosser ask one of your many friends, yea right, on second thought ask whoever serves you in the liquor store. I am sick of you now knackers so I won't be responding to anymore of your crap. I leave you with two words I suspect most people leave you with, Fuck You.
Oh darn. I thought Sammy was going to sing "I Dig The Mamas And The Papas At The Trip Sunset Strip In L.A." and then Cass would do an impersonation of Mary Travers doing an impersonation of Cass.
I love this clip, only if they did variety shows like this now days..... such talented performers!! thanks for putting this back up, its been ages since this clip has been on here...

I am sick of you now knackers so I won't be responding to anymore of your crap. I leave you with two words I suspect most people leave you with, Fuck You.

Ok, I NEED to know what Cass said after Sammie Davies said he got carried away...
I thought it was either: "I'd like to have a meeting in your pants" or "I'd like to have a meeting with your pants"
... I may just be hearing things but it cracks me up every time. Still.. I would like to know what she said for sure. :)
GO CASS!

Irony-saying what you don't mean for effect.
They sang that they dig Rock and Roll music then added a big "but" to every verse putting down the artists in question.
They were in effect saying that they didn't dig the rock music that was putting their sound out to pasture.

Sizeless, Billy Jack.
Say wasn't this song supposed to be ironic?
Raymantico 3 years ago
not so much, it was originally a satire of Rock by Peter, Paul and Mary-folkies rapidly becoming culturally irrelevant.

Oh darn. I thought Sammy was going to sing "I Dig The Mamas And The Papas At The Trip Sunset Strip In L.A." and then Cass would do an impersonation of Mary Travers doing an impersonation of Cass.

Two classic, real performers...
Nowadays we have Britney Spears mental collapse and furore over a wardrobe malfunction... It's just not the same, is it?
