Technically it's the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales aren't different countries, they're provinces.

There is a great channel on youtube which has a great explanantion video of this. Check the CGPGrey channel.

Each country has different international football teams, and 3 of the 4 have different international rugby teams. They also compete seperately in athletics at the commonwealth games.

It's a misleading concept, but they are countries.

Thank you very much for missing out my country. The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is a country. And whilst yes we call England, Wales, Scotland and NI countries of the UK or nations of the UK. it is extremely misleading to put England, Scotland etc as countries in line with other sovereign countries.

@sodajump You people should know by now that Turkey, Cyprus, Russia, Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan can ALL be considered European AND Asian simultaneously. It is not incorrect to include these countries in Europe, the same way it is not incorrect to include them in Asia. Search for the term "transcontinental countries" in google and you'll learn something new maybe.
