2. When making a punch/kick, fold the arm/leg up, then draw the leg long and retracted for the kick in 2 frames, then fold it up again, this gives a quick kick effect.

3. DO put time in it, i've been working on 1 video for about 5 hours now and it is finally starting to look like something, not only will the video look cool, it's the only way you will get experience with the program.

Guys ive been working on a stick for a long time now, and i'm starting to get it, heres a couple of hints i have noticed, from a newbie, just like you, but it looks smooth as fuck :);

1. Things MAY seem cheesy when you are drawing them, but don't keep erasing the same over and over again, if you are like me, you want it to be perfect, but trust me, if you make a couple more frames it fits perfectly in the video 80% of the time. ( hint 2 in another comment )

@stopmotionmanager pivot is easier in the sense that you dont have to redraw the figure every frame. the program hes using is macromedia flash. it is harder to keep your drawings consistent, but once you do, your animations will look much better than on pivot. also u have a lot more freedom with flash
