He forgot mostly the basics betta fish are tropical so they most likely need a heater and also for plants and decorations you dont use sharp or hard because it will damage the betta's fin and fish are most likely not to be kept in bowls.
This could be the WORST video I've seen yet. Youtube does not have any good Betta keeping videos or tank set up videos. Bettas should NOT live in bowls of that size. In fact they should not be living in bowls period. Bettas require an absolute minimum of 5 gallons. Some people say that you can use 2.5 gallon tanks, but they are harder to maintain. 5 gallons (10 gallons are even better) are easier because you can cycle them. They can also be regulated to the correct temperature.
@ilovetheboys859 They're talking about rice paddies because that is a betta fish's natural habitat. We humans are taking them from a large area to swim to a small area, so it's tricky.
I've got 3 bettas, 2 male 1 female...I've had the first male for about seven months, the female about 5 months, and the second male ony a few weeks but they seem to be doing well w/o any help from these posts! I have the female in a 10 gal tank w/a heater, and guppies n goldfish and the males are seperated, one in a 2 gal tank w/one art plant the other a glass bowl about 1 1/2 gal w/a art plant and some decorations...they seem to be doing fine....any advice from a REAL Betta expert??
The only key to have a healthy betta for decades: Be properly informed. And get a 2.5 gallon aquarium, put aquarium gravel in it, place a sea shell in it , place an artificial aquaria plant behind the shell, add dechorinated water, leaving a 3 inch of air space, wait 2 weeks before adding a red male betta and there!
Bettas breathe from the surface of the water but like to rest near the bottom. Making that trip is tiring so they don't like water more that a few feet deep. But yes the biggest home possible is always the best. Just not too deep.
Well, for a betta they are compatible and easy to keep in small bowls. Being a labyrinth fish (taking in O2 from the air) using a special organ adapted between the eye and gill. Betta's are used to rice fields with little space, contaminated waters, and little O2 in the water. Betta's are really easy and require very low maintenance making them perfect for bowls. Or for people who have them for fun.
OR you could stop preaching to me as if i'm a child. and when you say easy to keep in a small bowl you mean very frequent total water changes, inability (or at least stunted ability) to have a filter/heater, horrifically small living space for a living, breathing creature. when you say rice paddy do you even realize how flippin huge they are? thousands of feet wide in some places, which means the fish has almost infinite space to inhabit. I know your intentions are pure but seriously. no.
Ya, thats true. Anyways rice fields are filled with rice...There is little space. Plus they tend to stay at the top of aquariums, so it is hard for them to swim at the top.
what the hell is a ragtail, twintail and a showtail?
I BELIEVE there is halfmoon, overhalfmoon, delta, superdelta, plakat, halfmoonplakt, veiltail, crowntail, combtail....i think thats it, anyone know of any more?
That bowl is obscenely small. Bettas do survive in small bowls but they do not thrive. How would you like to live out your life in a closet?
A tank of at least 2 gallons is best. I keep my betta in a 5 gallon tank w/filter and populated w/interesting artificial plants and the fish is happy as can be. I would even get a 10 gallon tank for it if I had the desk space.
thats way to small i agree with the consensus you should atleast get a 2 gallon tank or something bigger if you want more bettas or just to make the one betta happy
Typical pet store explanation.I don't agree with bowl husbandry as water gets stale. The bettas I used to keep were in a system I built and was heated, filtered, and UV sterilized. You don't have to have a setup like mine, but bowls are NG! Bettas are more complicated than ppl think. I've been a breeder for over 15 years. So, everybody take care of your bettas by looking online for how actual betta keepers/breeders take care of their treasures.
As usual pet stores give you the WRONG advice.....Tank not bowl, that bowl is like at least 8 times smaller than the amount of water they should be kept in, and he mentioned nothing about a heater or filter.....Owell i guess you cant change everybody, thanks for putting the vid up though, i have nothing against expert village, but some of the stuff is wrong info.
well if yo change the water on a regular basis and have cultured gravel than a heater is not needed if you heat your house in the winter or keep the bowl against a freezer or under a lamp than you dont need a heater and as for bowls how would you like to be locked up in a giant house with no company and be expected to be happy everytime i put a betta in a container of more than 2 gallons he freaks out doesnt make a bubble nest and usually dies in a few weeks but in a bowl one will usualy thrives
Wow, well i have had the exact opposite results with mine, did you have a heater in the 2 gallon? The benefits of an aqurium heater keep water warm, so you can place the tank wherever, and keep it at a STABLE temp which is very important, if your house is heated, its not gonna be spot on 25c all the time, and MOST people dont keep there houses heated perfctly all year around. In the wild betas dont live in a quart of still water with constant temp fluctuations.....
well the majority of the populace pronounces it baita so i dont think one language cop(what yo never heard the phrase before?)can change the way everyone already pronounces something
0:19 really i didnt think we had to set it up with water

tropix579 7 months ago 2
Watching this gives me a headache. What you REALLY need for a betta is:
1. At least a five gallon tank.
2. A heater.
3. A filter.
4. Lots of hiding spots and plants.
5. Glavel.
6. Clean, safe water.

They have more than enough room to explore in rice unlike in fish bowls where they can only go around in circles.
