The CRAM was useless on Taji when i was there in 10-11 (yea i know, nothing happened then and it was boring as all shit), but it would go off for "ghosts" (rounds that weren't actually there) but it wouldn't go off half the time when IDF actually came in. There was one point where 7 rockets hit the base and the CRAM didn't make a peep.
07-08 Camp Victory., Iraq. The best thing to do was to stay vigilant. C-Ram warning or not. After a few months I could tell what was a car bomb, controlled DET, our stuff or....theirs. It was pleasure to hear the paladins open up on them to ring in the new year. ;)
I was there in 2004 when 5 people got killed at the BX from an incoming round, on our last day a mortar flew over the C130 as we were walking to the plane, we had to turn around and run for the PAX terminal. Sure was nice to have CRAM in 2008, 2009
I was there in '06 and '07- '08 and remember that shit all too well. I'm out now, and want to say a big THANK YOU to all my brothers and sisters still in.
This is the LPWS (Land-base Phalanx Weapon System) not C-RAM its self, but a part of the C-RAM system. With out giving specifics.... there are many reasons why morter and rockets are still an issue. Our enamys are getting smarter. Just like anything it does have its limitations. This system has a 72% success rate country wide. You only hear when it doesn't work.
how effective is the C-RAM, my friend who was deployed at balad afb was telling me about them. i was confused why we have that kind of technology and yet mortars are still a big problem.
@SWAT518 well unfortunately, you can't just carry C-RAMs around and a majority of mortar attacks occur in inclosed areas and ambushes where a C-RAM is not available
that was my fault for being more specific. what confuses me is why mortar attacks are still such a huge deal on bases. how are people still getting hit on base by mortars?
I was the COR for tower 12 on LSA Anaconda. It was 12:50 am. (the 00:50 you hear on the radio) I was behind building 4162 taking out the trash from tower 12. The voice you hear is Anaconda main taking an incoming motar attack report from tower 42. (The good copy 42 you hear on the radio.) This was the third incoming attack in less than 10 minutes. I got my cell phone out of my pocket and pointed it toward the second incoming round and missed it, I just happned to catch the third round.
looked like a test fire, the timing of it seems like they knew about it before hand. Unless your camera is always on and in hand you wouldnt have cuaght that.

I was at south ramp with the 130's in 09' and then again in 2010. the CRAM only hits like 3 out of 10 mortars.

I was at Balad in Oct 2006, never heard the alarms. If a rocket attack hit, you would not hear the alarm for sure.

@aquaman0167 You are wrong, I was there for a year and they do them at random times so the locals dont know the schedule

Wow. What a sight! I wonder how effective the anti-mortar fire from C-Ram was?
Most vids on youtube were test fires and I think I recall someone posting many mortars got through? God bless those men and women!

Balad and LSA Anaconda are a joke, they are like club meds. Shit was real in the Anbar in 06 and 07.
