Thank you for this. After 2 weeks in China to adopt our daughter, I cried when we got to the US Consulate in southern China. I thought that after 14 years in the U.S. Air Force, traveling the world that I'd seen the seamy underside of just about every pseudo-democracy, but nothing prepared me for the interior of China. If you think the US is bad, go to a communist country and see how long it takes to land in jail for speaking against it.

She says for the first time in my life I'm proud. Nothing out of context at all, if you even know what that term means. This is the exact sentence on film.

But if this is the only such comment in this speech and she says this is the first time she's proud of her country, without using the term "very" then it's legit for people to question her on it.

Let me help you kghoo. The ad doesn't 'accurately and truthfully' report that Michelle said she was proud for the first time of Americans' engagement with the political process. It truncates, distorts and misrepresents what she said.
Who says so? Well, Laura Bush for one.
Secondly, if the 'bunch of Americans' just want to say why they're proud of their country, then why feature Michelle at all?
It's cheap, sad and most of all dishonest. And if you can't see that, well then I can't help you.

A group makes an ad which (a) accurately and truthfully reports what an Obama surrogate — who just happens to be his wife and closest adviser — said in a campaign appearance wherein she was speaking for him, (b) then accurately and truthfully reports why a bunch of Americans are proud of their country, and Democrats respond that this is and example of false and mean-spirited attacks?

It's lame and won't work. The Republicans don't have any real arguments of substance to engage in, so they're having to attack the candidate's wife.

I don't see how this is shameful. Michelle said she was proud of America for the first time, as if nothing else in our history made her proud. This is contrasted with Americans saying why they have always been proud of America. Its not an attack ad.
And those saying its a race motivated ad and Republicans are racist. Get a clue. Rose Strong says in the ad, "I'm proud to be an American, because no matter what background, race or religion you have, you can do or be whatever you set your mind to."

The difference between a patriot and a nationalist is, a nationalist supports their country now in whatever they are doing.. a patriot may support the founding of the country or the principles it stands for but not necessarily what it is currently. You can say a nationalist is a "blind patriot".
