Heh, I'm impressed. Did similar some years ago with an old Acer NL350 (P120/24mb), with Win95 Lite, and I'm pretty sure it was no faster... possibly even a touch slower. Battery life didn't significantly increase either. Went up from an 850mb 2.5" disk to a 2Gb CF card ("expensive"! - Laptop was £40 second hand, the CF card £42 new) and apart from the extra capacity and quieter running it didn't seem to benefit much. The machine's disk interface was just too crap. Or maybe it was a bad CF card?
Well, my parents used this thing untill four years ago. I was 14 at that time, and I was fucked. I had to make every scchool project at that piece of old crap. My days were horrible.
@hurrn I was searching for SSD videos when I accidentally came across this one. Fortunately I am the prowd owner of a very powerful computer which my father is jealous of. He needs a powerfull computer for photo and video editing, he owns a Celeron. My pc renders full HD pictures in 3dsmax within 10 minutes. But my father does not really know how to spend the money well, he buys everything at a way too expensive price. So now faith has taken revenge on him for letting me work on that old laptop.
@Yarach Making anyone work with a Toshiba Satellite is a surefire way to hurt your karma. At least, unless it's been significantly upgraded from stock in the RAM and disk departments...
@a4ndr3c Because for a machine like that, Win95 Lite is a much better, smaller, and easier to implement choice that doesn't involve getting used to a whole different software suite and way of working. So long as you don't want to go online with it, anyway.
@TahreyUK Agree with the part of not having to learn another way to use the computer, but better and smaller? ur kidding right? Have u ever used linux? Not talking about ubuntu crap distro.
Oh my goodness, I have this exact same laptop, but unfortunately the OS is corrupt or something. Whenever I boot it up, I see the taskbar for 1 frame and then it's gone. If I hit the windows key on the keyboard, I get the message "Kernel32 has done an illegal act" with the details about something with the module USER.EXE. It's a shame, it would be cool to play around with
@hurrn I live in the middle of Europe, so that's not going to be cheap. The price will probably go up by $80. No way I'm gonna pay that much for such an OS
sooner or later there will be a used cd on ebay for a few euros, shipping also a few euros.. or download it... but i will not post any illegal link here:)
Damn, theses computers were so slow in them days, I have a Compaq cq56 running a SATA 60gb ssd drive, use to have platter and it took over a 2 minutes to load up, after a few months of purchasing the laptop, the hard drive f***ed up, this is one things I hate about platter with laptops, they break easily, after converting from hdd to ssd, I find that the speed and lfie span a reliablity, no blue screen, no clicking noises, no slow loading, no noise, ssd is better than hdd, fact.
Hmmm, you might be on to something, you could reuse a old laptop if you put one of those cards in them I be you could boost it's over all speed of the computer. good job!
@lewisvz the ssd would burn out fairly quickly because you need win 7 to use the TRIM function to increase the lifespan of the ssd as well as keeping the performance in tip top shape
@tavi921 i've noticed in desciptions on ssds in newegg, they always say if it has trim support. they are not 100% accurate all the time but it leads me to suspect that not all ssds support trim (i do not own an ssd but in the market right now).not to mention they are making use of a cf to ide adapter. no doubt cf card makers did not incorperate trim support on their cards. you make a good point though about windows 7 and trim though.
you know the way there is WINDOWS XP embedded..... people say that when the system is writing stuff it will kill the card...is your running normally???/
hi..i know i'm asking again but i really cant seem to install windows on it..i dont have the system on floppy drives and my laptop doesn't have cd either..i tried putting full system onto the cf card and launching SETUP.EXE from dos which goes through the whole installation but after restarting it wont find it's way and if I write WINDOWS\WIN it launches into blue screen and says VFAT INITIALIZATION FAILDE........i really need help.............thanks
how did you make the cf card bootable? it might be the difference between the boot files with which you made it bootable and the windows98 version you try to install.
@hurrn oh shit!!!!!! i forgot about that...i'm actually getting 4gb card next week ..i want to use the HP FORMAT tool to make it bootasble....now I only have 512mb card and I tried to install the windows 95 on it and tht'a why it didn't boot........thanks for reminding me..i guess it will work when i get the big card as HP tool doesn't support less thank 1gb...thanks again
hey...can i just ask one more question...how did you put windows on that cf card..did you put 98 on floppy or cd and then install it normally or what????thanks
@Byrtus21 sure, we did make an partition image from the win98 on the hdd and restored it on the cf card , but it should work with diskettes or cdrom-installation directly onto the card.
no...mine actually has the 1.8'' ide but the connection on the 1.8 and 2.5 for the cf adapter should be the same size as they are both 44 pin......thanks for the video....i might finally get my laptop back to life
