  • you're a great teacher to these passionate kids!

  • hi Lisa, I have a question. I want to learn the violin but i'm left-handed and would hold the bow in my left-hand. Am I stuck having to learn to play with the right hand?

  • Hi,

Violinists are both left-handed and right-handed people. It makes no difference in learning the instrument. Both hands are equally important. Unless you are missing fingers or something, you hold the violin in your left hand and the bow in your right. The fact that both hands do something different is what makes a string instrument so difficult to learn.

  • Nice video! I've been looking for tips on how to start teaching beginners.

  • I use a series of books called "Adventures in Violinland" written by Shirley Givens and sold through SHAR. They are wonderfully systematic, layering each step carefully right from the beginning. And they have as a foundation the Galamian technique taught in most conservatories, so they teach correct technique from the beginning - not modified as in Suzuki methods.
