You didn't get any tetrises in 900-999, but you still got the M-roll. Even if you had cleared the roll, you still would have had M, right?

Not really. Try the game, it has a lot of optimizations for speed play. There's a shadow where the pieces fall, and there's actually a brief time before the piece actually locks in. And 2nd of all, it doesn't fall at that speed in master mode. It increases by level.
