In a war with the US, the Iranian military would be taken out with ease by US airforce and navy. However, occupying a country like Iran would be almost impossible. The Iraqi army was annihilated by US led coalition during Persian Gulf war. Sadaam had a military before 2003 invasion, and we annihilated his army again. The Americans are killing the insurgents by the tens of thousands, the problem is that the insurgents are killing iraqi civillians and blowing up marketplaces to the extent that there is no security. How can anyone defeat an enemy who uses suicide as a weapon?

The reason Iraq didn't have planes in 2003 is because we destroyed them in 1990. We have lost 3500 soldiers and the insurgents has lost tens of thousands. The ones the US military don't kill, they blow themselves up when they blow up marketplaces and schools. The insurgents blow up mosques and marketplaces indiscrimiantely to undermine Maliki's goverment. There is no way the US could claim victory, if the terrorists keep killing Iraqis. That is the insurgent strategy to victory.
