  • I hve theL 358 and use both the tt1 &tt5 on nikon & nikon sb900 speedlight hw can ibmk

  • I hve the L 358 light mete

  • if i uncheck the box as described will i still have ttl control on my minitt1 and flextt5

  • Yes, I do have a question.... Why do you toss your equipment around like that ? Are you O.K ? Where you dropped as a child ? I'm guessing you did not buy it, someone else did. Yeah ! I know, your gonna come back at me with some smart remark about how you can afford it. Affording and caring for euipment are two different things. This is why people like you need help. Have a nice day

  • I have a Nikon SB900 Flash (set to Manual) attached to a FlexTT5 PW. I'm running the latest firmware on the TT5 and using a newer version of the PW Utility software than you're showing in your video.

My Light Meter is the Sekonic L-758DR. I have both devices set to Channel 1. I can't get the flash to trigger. The PW indicator light turns red when I press the button on the Sekonic, but no flash goes off. What gives?

  • @monkeygust Same problem here! Here's what I found: Use channel 2 to setup for the Sekonic, set for "basic trigger" mode on the Misc tab. Turn on SB900, set to manual (M 1/?), turn on FlexTT5 (to C2). SB900 display should still show M 1/? and NOT MFP 1/?. I dont know if the solution was to use C2 instead of C1, or if it was setting to "basic trigger" mode. (You already know that you can't use ControlTL for receiving, and the flash must be in Manual mode, not TTL.) Good luck!

  • @sdlfkjslkjsd Thanks for sharing this. I've spent the entire evening looking for a solution for this problem with my Sekonic L-358. I think the key is setting the Flex TT5 to basic trigger mode. I did that with C1 and it FINALLY worked consistently. Thanks again!!

  • @monkeygust I have the EXACT same problem with the same light meter, flash, etc - I emailed PW and am waiting to hear back from them. I tried setting C2 to manual instead of CTL and set to Channel 32/A to test. Nada. Then I tried triggering flashes in manual mode from my D3s/TT1 with the same setup...flashes didn't fire and getting red LED blinkie still. Go back to CTL in C1/Channel 1 and works fine. Not sure what the issue is, but I think it's not just with the Sekonic?

  • I have 2 TTL5 and a TT1. Do I have to uncheck TTL on ALL of the units before I use my Sekonic L758DR with my Mini&Flex system?

  • Thanks for this!

  • Not using Flex TT5. Having problems with Plus II's inside a church. Maybe electronic interference. Camera triggers lights with no problem, but L-385 would only trigger from close distances. Any thoughts on this?

  • i think you should do a hyper sync and HHS video on how to config and operate

  • I just read above... I had no flash on the Flex when I tried this...

  • It didn't work on my L-358.... I had the Flex set up to work with my Plus2 and when I did what you said in the Video, it didn't work with the Sekonic or my Plus2, I had to re-clone my flex again... So now what?

  • Test

  • Why in the hell do you drop all your gear, I see the 758dr is missing the jog wheel. Nice! Info was ok but your dropping of gear was strange, I think you were trying to be cool but you are a dork! I could care less if you are inspired to do anymore videos, If you had to pay for the gear I bet you would respect it. !

  • @c4dfreak You must live a pathetic life.

  • Zack could you do a video on the CURRENT tabs/ability to configure TT1 or TT5 with the PocketWizard Utility? Specifically going over HyperSync! What's the highest shutter speed I can get with my Canon 5D Mk II?

  • Hi,

Shouldn't the L-758Dr read the F instead of the T while on Flash wireless transmitter mode?

as it's the F stop that counts …isn't it ?

    Thanks

  • Hi! I also have a Nikon Flex TT5 & Mini TT1 PW and I'm using SB 900 Flashes But i can't fire it true my light meter Sekonic L-358. Do i do like your video tutorial on you tube Sekonic + Flex TT5.

or differently. Can you please help me? Thank You.

  • Hi! I also have a Nikon Flex TT5 & Mini TT1 but i can't get my Sekonic L-358 to fire remotely . do i do same as you show on youtube video? or differently. can you please help me?

  • So can you save one setting (configuration in the software) for metering with the L-358 and save one for shooting TTL and jump between the settings when needed?

  • that was hilarious :22 dropping the flex tt5 and meter to the ground.

  • Thanks for the great help.... 1 last step... if using the new software upgrade and the Nikon SB-900 - click 'Misc" on the Pocket wizard Utility then check the "Basic firing mode" - and your flash has to be in manual mode... Mine did not work till I did this...

  • @tetracaine1 Thank you so much for your post. I was tearing my hair out over this and your recommendation solved my issue. Thanks again! Hank

  • Hello have a Elinchrom Quadra RX A head flash unit and cannot get it to go off beyond 320th on my camera (Nikon D3S)? All my Pocket Wizards are Flex TT5's . I have read that some are getting much faster speeds than 320. I also ordered a Elinchrom Ranger RX 1100ws w/ a PW ST4 and its being shipped, should be here Friday; that's also an A head. Could you please provide a video on this. Thanks;0)

  • Can we use a light meter when using the hypersync mode on studio light, like Bowens studio strobe (for example if I expect to shoot at 1/1600 sec) ... apologize: using flextt5 and Mini TT1 on Nikon D3X

  • Can we use a light meter when using the hypersync mode on studio light, like Bowens studio strobe (for example if I expect to shoot at 1/1600 sec) ...

  • I have Mini TT1 and 2 Flex TT5 and Sekonic 758DR. How can I set up so that Sekonic 758DR can triger the Canon flash 580EX 2.

    Thank you,

  • Zack,

Sorry, I didn't give you enough info there. The SB700/900's are set to manual and I get ONE flash only when triggered by the Sekonic. After that, the red LED on the FlexTT5 flashes once when triggered again by the Sekonic but the flash does not fire. The only way I can get it to fire again, is to switch off the SB700/900 and start again. But once again - I only get one flash. Have you any ideas please ?

  • Zack,

Tried this with my SB700/SB900 and Sekonic 758DR. The red light on the FexTT5 flashes, but the flash does not. Using the latest ver 3 firmware for Nikon. Any ideas please ? I really need this to work, it is one of the main reasons I bought into the new PW system. Sekonic and TT5 set to standard channel 12.

  • Zack,

If I set my Sekonic L358 to the multiple flash setting will it measure the pre flash and the computed flash to give me an accurate reading?

  • OK, OK, i figured out why it doesn't fire the flash, simple the flash has to be put in Manual mode, if stayed on ETTL (canon flash) the pocket wizard will blink like 4-5 times but the flash won't fire

  • Zack, appreciate if you can do a video on how to the use the LEARN function to change to use the standard channel or controltl channel, especially when you are out in the field and don;t have access to a computer.

  • The instructions for the Sekonic only show group A,B,C,D, capability if you select Channel 17-32. I want to use group A, B, and C on my FLEXes.

Is your example video saying that you don't have to set a group (letter) on the Sekonic at all, and, you can just pick something like Channel 2 and save it as a Manual flash channel in the Save function?

What I am trying to do is set up channel 1 for TTL and channel 2 for manual flash, so I can use either at weddings, when I need to.

  • I have MiniTT1 on my canon XSi and 2 FlexTT5s for canon 580 ex II flashes. Also I have Elinchrom Ranger Quadra RX A heads.

How can I shot with pocketwizzard my Ranger quadra above 1/250 sync speed?

I did with TT5 using the P2 port but not above the sync speed.

  • Can you answer this.. Who cut your fuckin hair?? They should be shot!

  • Ok..I am a moron. I have tried to follow all of these steps with no success. I did the pocket wizard utility and unchecked the use control TL and left all the settings as they were. I selected channel 1 for standard receive channel. I turned pushed the mode button until the icon with antenna came up and channel 1 blinking how do I select it and have the blinking stop? I pushed the mode button and turned the dial. When I go back to the icon the number is blinking and it doesn't trigger my flash.

  • @donnyl543 Yes moron is right. I got it now. It works as you said it would.

    Thanx

  • Hi,

I'm the next in the que. Read that I'm not the only one who is facing exact the same problem. Maybe someone can help me with the following problem.

I configured the Mini & Flex according the manual/video so I'm able to fire the flash with the Sekonic L-358 light meter. With the SB800 mounted everything works just fine, no problem at all. But if I mount an SB900 on the Flex it fires only ones and then it stops.

Does anyone know a solution for it? It gives me a headache!!!!!!

  • Please answer this question !!!

How can I trigger my FlexTT5 from my MultiMax. It work perfect the other way around but not Multimax to FlexTT5. I have the PW MultiMax on the hotshoe of a Canon 5D and the FlexTT5 on Canon Speedlite 550ex.

  • How would you setup a TT5/AC9 combo to work with the L-358 Sekonic? I want to be able to trigger the Alien Bees from the Sekonic and then change the Configuration to Control TL Channel for my shoot after I have setup my exposure.

  • I made one fatal mistake that had me scratching my head for hours. After you set the channel number on the Sekonic (channel number blinking), you need to hold mode and turn the dial CLOCKWISE! one click so you see the lightning bolt with the antenna with a box around it as well as your shutter speed and aperture readouts. If you turn it counter-clockwise as I had been doing, you simply go to Cord Flash Mode (Lightning bolt with a C has a square around it). That won't trigger the FlexTT5's.

  • I've set my TT5 and my Sekonic L-558 as per the video and tried to trigger a SB800 and sB900 with no luck. When I press the trigger on the meter the TT5 flashes red 5 times but the SB does not trigger. Any suggestions??? The firmware is the latest version.

  • @mikesilvephotography HI, any luck with your problem, I just did everything fallowing this video and I have the same problem as you. Please let me know if you find any solution. Thanks

  • Can you answer this please?

I shoot sony, i have strobe that i use and i would like to get rid of using my wireless IR flash technique to activate my strobes. Is There a pocket wizard i can purchase for my sony?

  • At 1:30, what do you mean roll the dial again? Mine is still blinking and no fire?

  • I followed your instruction and it only worked with my SB 800 unit, not with my SB 900 unit at all. Also, when keep that setting, my TT1 will not trigger SB900 or SB800 at all. So I have to set it back to default setting to make TT1 work with my TT5 flex. This is puzzling. I am bought into this fancy gadget and turned out to be a bunch of frustration so far.

  • I have a canon 1d mkI . there were some suddle changes to the MkII and it is on the compatability list .

what problems will I have if I match the 2 ?

This camera has a max sync of 500

  • Hello,

Can you shift between Aperture and Shutter sub-modes in the Auto-Reset (or any of the Flash modes)? I'm asking because my efforts (wireless-enabled L-758Cine) yield no result: in Ambient mode I can select either the Aperture or Shutter priority, but in all of the Flash modes I fail to switch to Aperture priority. Also, your 758's dial looks different than mine: has Sekonic revised the design somewhat this year? Thanks...

  • I have 3 Nikon TT5s and a Sekonic L358 with the radio module installed. I followed the instructions in this video, set both the TT5s and Sekonic meter to Ch1. I pressed the trigger button on the PW and the flash fired once, then nothing. The red light comes on but no flash. I'm using SB900 Flash without a cable, and I've tried the flash in both Manual and TTL with no luck. Any suggestions?

  • Zach, followed directions on the vid (thanks); disabled ControlTL on FlexTT5, set Canon 580EX II to Manual. Test button on Flex would fire the flash, test button on MiniTT1 would fire flash. The Sekonic L-358 would not fire the flash unless it was within 1' of the Flex. Camera would not trigger the flash either. Puzzling and frustrating. Any suggestions from you or anyone else would be appreciated. Camera is Canon 1Ds MK III.

  • I have the same issue as TheFifty150. I'm getting fed up with these not being able to trigger my SB-900 in manual with my L-358. They work great at TTL from the MiniTT1. I get one flash after I use the Sekonic. After that the red lamp on the TT5 goes on with trigger, but no flash.

  • I have the L-358, did exactly what you stated however the TT5 just blinks red a few times after depressing the meter, so the TT5 is obviously receiving a signal from the RT-32 module (the TT5 is mounted with an SB-900, not sure if this makes a difference...) any other supporting on this? am I alone in this?

  • @TheFifty150

Hi I have the same problem SB800 in Manual and I can fire it with my L358: Put a SB900 on the same flex and all I get is the red light. Im still looking for a solution. I have emailed pocket support and am still waiting for a response

  • Hi, thanks for the video tutorial - it helped a lot.

I just received the FlexTT5 for Nikon and was using your video to connect to my Seikonic L358.

When I use my SB-800, everything works fine & I can keep pressing the 'measure' button and the flash will fire.

However, on my SB-900, with identical settings, the first time I press 'measure' the flash will fire, but will not fire again when I press 'measure'.

If I turn the SB-900 off and on again, the flash will again just fire once.

    Am I wrong?

  • Help, I'm going crazy. I've got the flex tt5 on my d300s attached to my sb900. I've turned off control tl transmit... and I've turned off 'use controlTL for Receive Channel. I have my Sekonic L358 (bought on ebay) with the rt module 32 and the back buttons on up,up, down, down. I am in the radio flash mode (the far right). I've also attached the N90M-ACC-ND cable to my flex tt5 and the camera. I can't get the sekonic to trigger the flash or the camera. Hellllp!---Steve Sax

  • Hi!

I'm planning to buy the MiniTT1 and the FlexTT5 so i can use them with 4 studio flashes from the AlienBee company using the AC9 AlienBees Adapter. The questions are: can i control 4 flashes or more? Can i moderate manually the intensity of light that i want in each flash independently? and will the MiniTT1 will take the reading automatically?

  • Opps. I realized I had the mini hooked up to the computer and not the Flex. Once I corrected that I was able to turn of the ControlTL setting.

  • I had my Sekonic L-758DR working in the past but I just uploaded the latest version of the PocketWizard Utility (v.35). Now when I go the the Channel Tab there not longer is an option to disable the ControlTL for RX Channel. The only options are Control TL Channel and Standard Channel.

  • @wardcameron Sorry. That should have read v1.35 not v.35

  • very informative video clip. I have the PW AC3. How do I update fimware on this unit? It does not have any ports for connecting to a computer.

  • can I use TT5 with PW plus II?

  • AC9 metering with Alien Bees, and Sekonic L-358?

Now that I have my Mini TT1, Flex TT5, AC9 (White Lightning) and Canon 5dMkII, how do I meter my set-up?

  • Hey there,

I've got some AB800 hooked up with AC9 on a TT5 and even though I've did everything your stating here, I see the light going on the TT5 connected on the AB800 but nothing else happens, does this mean it's incompatible?

That would be bad, as I bought the RF module for the L-358 just for that and my AB800... and nothing states that wouldn't work. I've tried different channels and nothing seems to change, the TT5 seenms to receive the signal but doesn't trigger the flash...!

  • I have canon TT5 and sekonic l358 with RT-32N module installed. Using the PW utility tool, for my configuration 2, I had the "Use ControlTl for Rx Channel" unchecked and saved. I verified that it was saved correctly to my TT5 by unplugging and replugging it into the PW utility to confirmed that it was saved. Then I set my PW to ch2 and my L-358 to Ch2. I pressed the trigger button (10) on the sekonic to trigger the PW but it failed to fire the flash. Can you help?

  • @phoeticmemories There is one piece of missing information: What flashes are you using and how are you connecting them.

Go back to your set up and press the measuring button of the L-358 to see the red monitor lamp light on the Flex that you set to receive RX CH2. If the red light comes on, the Flex received the trigger signal from the L-358. If the red light blinks, you probably have a Canon flash in the shoe set for ETTL. Needs to be on Manual mode.

  • @pocketwizardvids (continued) If you are using a connecting cable coming out of the flash port of the FlexTT5 and into the PC or other special terminal of the flash and you get a red light but no flash, check your connections or the cord itself. If I completely missed this, please call in with your equipment near you so that one of our phone techs can walk you through it.

  • I am using canon 580 ex ii flash.

  • I am using canon 580 ex ii flash. The flash is connected to my Pocketwizard TT5. On my camera is TT1. Both TT5 and TT1 are set to CH2 because in the PW utility, I had the "Use ControlTl for Rx Channel" for CH2. The canon 580 ex ii is set to ETTL.

  • @phoeticmemories I do not know the reasons why it does not fire, however I can tell you how to make it fire. Connect the Flex to the utility software and goto the Config channel you are using (Either C1 or C2). Click the "misc" tab and make sure that "Basic Trigger" is selected. Apply changes and make a note of the "Standard Channel number. Put this number into the light meter and this will trigger the flex and flash. As noted previous, make sure that the flash is in manual from the on position

  • @phoeticmemories I share your pain; To get this system to work you must, 1) Uncheck the "Use Control Tl for Rx Channel" box, 2) Select the channel you wish to use (also the channel you will select on your meter and Flex TT5) in the "Use Standard Channel" drop down menu and 3) Be sure your flashes are in manual, and NOT TTL mode.

  • Awesome videos. It's great to see a company going the extra mile to get info out to it's users.

  • Hey Zack, once you've programmed your pw's mini and flex for hyper sync is there a way to switch it off or save it in the learned mode, if you don't want to use hyper sync, but still want to use the flex and mini during the same shoot? Hopefully this makes sense?????

  • You need to be in a cartoon. Kinda funny, but serious and the vids are good. Keep it up man!

  • I can use C2 on channel 5 to get my flash to fire with my L-358 but only when my 430 EX II is in manual mode. It will not fire in ETTL mode it only blinks red 4 times. I unchecked the box and set my channel to 5 in the utilities. I can only get it to work in channel 5, I first tried what you exactly showed in your video and channel one doesn't do anything. Please help...

  • I have the same settings but when I put on my flash ( 580EX ) it just blinks 5 times in red on my TT5! when I have the flash off, it blinks once on the unit, I have a sekonic L-358 with a RT module 32 in it. thanks for any help.

  • Houston we have a problem!!

I try using C2 on channel 5 like someone subject but don't work. I notice that every time I press the exposure on my meter (Sekonic L358) the Red led blink on my Flex, but I don't see any exposure. I try with two flash. Now my configuration is

Flex C1 on channel 1, ControlTL for RX Channel (Check)

Flex C2 on channel 5, ControlTL for RX Channel (Un-check)

    my Sekonic on channel 5

also notice that after turn on my Flex or change channel my flash fire, it this normal?

  • will they {PW} be putting the computer settings into the TTL5 in the future so you will not be out on a shoot and then have to get a computer and reset to setting to do something else, like the Sekonic setup you just explained?

  • Zack, can I trigger my Pocket Mini TT1 using the Sekonic L758DR. If so, can you

    create a video for this.

    Many Thanks.

  • Zack I am able to trigger my Canon 430EX II flash using L-358 with your instructions, however when taking photos on Manual Mode on Canon 40D or 50D with FLEXTT5 as transmitter and FLEXTT5 as receiver I am not able to shoot over the sync speed of 1/250. I check PW'S website no specific answers to this problems?

  • Thanks for the info, very useful, but whet about dropping the stuff? Is it supposed to be funny??

  • To those having problems, I set my sekonics (758dr and C500r) to channel 5, then on the c2 config of my flexTT5, I UNCHECKED the use controlTL box and set the standard channel to 5 as well and it works great. Just make sure you have your TT5's switch set to C2 when you use your meter. When you want to go to TTL , just set switch of the TT5's back to C1.

The only bummer is I shoot in TTL the majority of the time so it sucks to have to switch my TT5's from C1 to C2 when I use my meters.

  • Hey Zack. I was looking to see if I can use my 580ex in manual, trigger it with my sekonic L-558 and access the high speed sync and/or hypersync. I believe since we are not able to use control TL this is not available. Can a meter measure a high speed sync flash accurately? Also the L-558 does not let me select a shutter speed faster than 1/400th of a second for metering. Any suggestions on manual metering for high speed sync.

    David

    Surreal Photography

  • @SurrealPhotography I don't believe so. Because its High Speed Sync, your meter would only be detecting a fraction of the flash - only a slit as the shutter slides along. . . I wish there was a way, if anyone has any ideas? I think you can only meter to your sync speed. I know. Bummer. Time for someone to work out a way how!

  • zack your vids are cool!

  • hey Zack, thanks for sharing it! I just got 758DR 2 days ago, and tested it already with PC sync and PWII. Today thanks to you I've tested it with flexTT5 - works like a champ! Keep it up dude... :)

  • I picked up a brand new L-358 + PW module last week and had to use the sock on my 580 EX II in order to get the Sekonic to trigger the 580 EX II (FlexTT5) beyond 4 feet. I'm guessing the Sekonic PW module has a weak transmitter.

  • Very useful video...

but I use L-358 and follow ur instruction......not response between TT5 + 580ii and L358....I already reinstall my RT-32N module

how can i do??? look forward u reply!!!

    thank you very much!!!

  • For money I paid for my PWs and Sekonic I don't think I will be dropping them on the ground!

  • Yes, I wanted to get the TT1 & TT5 to remote triggering my Canon 1Dmark4 camera in Continuous High mode.

I already got the CM-N3-ACC cable to work with it, but it can only fire single shot, with some delay, and I got to wait for a few seconds before I fire the next shot.

    Please help...

  • @dennisphoto71

if your using your on camera hotshoe for the flash, you can only shoot single frame. Flash must be off camera hot shoe for continuous mode.

    Hope this helps.

  • Please do a video on using the Pocketwizard Flex WITH the Sekonic WITH a flash pack system like Profoto (built in radio receiver) WITH other Flex receivers. I can't get these all to work together. It has something to do with the channel I'm using I think...

  • My Profoto B2r sometimes doesn't pick the signal up from my L-758R

One thing that does seem to work is to fire the 'normal' PW (eg. Multimax) first which seems to make the Profoto 'wake-up' and then the Sekonic works fine

  • Zach:

You're one funny dude...I like the lighter side as a general rule. I think many folks would like to see applied technology videos. What I mean is, show us some videos on an actual shoot and walk us through your setup and workflow. These types of videos are what benefit me the most.

  • Thanks for the video! I set my Flextt5 and pocket wizard on channel 25 and it has worked perfect for me. I have a 758DR which is great as well. Thanks again for the video......information is a good thing!
