  • Does anyone know where the best place to buy a new drive is??

  • @mattch21 Thumbmonkey on ebay has been good for me in the past.

  • @mattch21 try tmart, 30.00 and change shipped with a couple tools..

  • this is the best video i've seen to explain what to do to avoiding flashing the drive. i used the same procedure on a philips dg-16d2s and it works like a charm now. just swap the boards and solder the connections in the same order and it will work.

  • @dainewjir yeah i just bought one off ebay with a 30 w soldering iron i hope it works out for me

  • Hey man Im getting an error when I put my xbox game in the xbox saying: TO PLAY THIS DISC, PUT IT IN AN XBOX 360 Console. Would this fix the issue if i replaced the drive like this?

  • Thanks alot man! This worked perfect, if i knew you id get you something nice. haha preciate it!!

  • Do you think you can do a video showing how to replace a Phillips Lite-on disc drive for xbox because I looked on Youtube, Google, and TTG, but I still can't find a video with a Phillips Lite-on disc drive. Can you please help me out...or if you don't make a video can you at least tell me if this is like the same thing as a Phillips Lite-on.

  • @ESOxiiNsAnE hey im about to make a video when mine comes in so just subscribe to me

  • Any time I watch someone solder with this speed, it makes me realize that:

    A) I just really suck at soldering.

    B) My soldering iron just really sucks at soldering.

  • thanks alot for this man saved me 250$ for a new xbox :) thanks again

  • cool vid, watching someone do this makes me feel a lot better about doing it myself. Just gotta get a new soldering iron before i order the replacement drive.

  • Guys need some help raga riding purchasing a new drive?? Also will a 20w soldering iron fine tip do the job?? I have a question regarding new DVD drive. I need to replace drive in my x box and know, I have to replace with exactly the same. Written on the drive shelving Model no - VAD6038 Ms part no - X800474-006 PBDS Part no - 3B41216029 Manufactured - march 2008 HW ver - J-DA1A4 FW ver - 64930C Sorry to be a pain, hope you can help! Thanks for your time
  • Great vid man, do you remember what wattage you had your iron set to? I'm guessing maybe 18?

  • @go0nTMM Actually, 30. I do not recommend using such a high setting if the user has not had a great deal of experience with one. 15 to 20 should do the trick without doing damage to the board.

  • Worked for me.. thanks! When I got to the wires I was like oh f*** since I was watching the Samsung drive replacement and not this one... lol. Glad it wasn't too hard afterall.

  • help i swapped out the boards and my disk drive will only play dvds and the games are unrecognized

  • Finally did mine after about a year or so of making do with my old one. The laser started going bad, so I had no choice but to replace the drive. The replacement was simple enough, but it turns out the new drive I bought has the exact same open tray problem right out of the box, so its back to knocking on the top to get it to work. :(

  • if i were to put in new wires would i need anything special? or is this just a bad idea

  • why does it look like your not talking it kinda looks like you commentated after you finished doing this on the computer

  • @ChristianATL2010 I dubbed in the audio after I made the vid.

  • awesome, thank you SOOO much.

  • that simple? Wow... time to try it out thank you so much, the new CD drive will cost me £10 as aposed to a new 360 8)

  • thanx dude i had open tray error and my warranty was up so i opened it up and every time i put a disc in i had to adjust the laser after a while the lens got scratched i just orderd the part and ill be following your guid once its here in a few days ill have to wait for skyrim for a few days all well got my friends xbox XD

  • Your vid helped me so much. I even fixed one of my friends drives. Thank you so much!

  • @thecloner212 So glad to hear it.

  • Awesome vid dude cheers. Saved me hundreds.

Never soldered electronic boards before either so am MEGA chuffed with myself.

    Thanks again.

  • @Odilwerk Awesome!

  • nvm i opened the drives up the circuit boards do not even match. so looks like i got to buy a brand new xbox.... yayyyy

  • @Awcky Good excuse to get the Gears or MW3 console..lol

  • ok i got two ben q drives. i wanna do this but i went to this link to see what kind of benq i have. the new one is a ben q lite on. the one i need to switch out is just a normal ben q so will this work still? or should i not do it...

  • Thanks man! did exactly what you said and BOOM it worked! Now I don't have to spend a 100 dollars for Microsoft to fix it and wait a few weeks or buy another Xbox for 300, it only took me about 40 bucks and some time....YOU ROCK!

  • @GreatCODEMAN22 Glad to help. Anytime I can deprive Microsoft of a few of our hard earned dollars, it's a good day!

  • Just wanted to say thank you so much for this video, I'm just about to replace my Liteon drive in my xbox and this video was invaluable. Thanks again, great video!

  • nice video dude, ive been tweaking those grub screws all evening, ill be doing this in the morning.

  • Great video. HELP!!!!!!!!

I have 2 benq DVD drives, but my bad drive's chip (good chip) is about half of the size as my new drive's chip (good laser). Will this still work and do I have the right drive?!

  • @randomvidskid Doubtful, the hardware needs to be the same. The part number need to match exactly. The firmware is not as important.

  • if the motherboard of my dvd drive is LITERALLY burnt, like it sparked up, can i still replace it?

  • @iDazedHD That is probably not going to work. You need to be able to access the "key" on the old board in order to flash it to the new on. That's really not my department because I do not know a lot on the subject. But in order for this fix to work, your original board needs to be in working order. Sorry. Lok at the bright side, it's a good excuse to buy the new XBox 360!

  • @LVProductions71 alright so no hope, and it turned out my dvd drive was a liteon... does this change anything?

  • JUST CHECKING, this is supposes to fix open tray error, Right?

  • @FireBlade1177 This is a repair that you would do if your DVD drive is not reading properly. If your drive is fine but the door is bad, there are several videos on YouTube that deal with drawer malfunctions. If nothing will fix the drawer, then do this.

  • ok, i just took my solder, heated it up, placed it on the little wire thingy gave the wire a little tug and it did nothing, i tried it about 3-4 times and nothing. could you please help me??? -Thanx

  • The dislike bar is the size of Justin Bieber's dick... wait there is no dislikes... oh well, still 100% accurate.

  • Thanks it took all day to find this!!

  • Thanks for the video, it was a lot of help.

  • i have a phillips ben Q drive and another one what isnt the same if i did this should it work ?

  • Thanks very Much, Worked Perfectly, Going to make my sister very happy for my birthday =) Of course, I'm still going to be playing on my 360 Slim =) thanks again.

  • Really really hoping that for once something goes right and this actually works for me, just waiting on my new drive

  • "I should be back some time today ah there we go, good deal..." :)

  • Do you have any more Xbox repair videos?

  • Great Video!! I followed it step by step, and it worked.

    Thank you,

    Manny

  • is it possible to put the board from a phillips-lite-on in to a ben Q dvd drive because i need a new drive but i don't know whether or not i can get a ben Q to replace my Lite-on cause imy mates ben Q installs iso discs but my lite-on dosn't on my other xbox or on my xbox that does no longer work

  • Thanks a lot for this video, just soldered mine, hopefully it works when i get it all back together

  • yeah i have a question. do u have to replace the circuit board if u buy a new dvd drive? i cant just install a new one that i buy online.

  • thanks, good video.

  • hey i did everything in this video, i have the same model drive and everything but mine will not play a game, it will play a movie though? Yeah, just need to know if i have anything else i need to do or if you even know what is wrong.

  • @regal2580 Sounds like you have a bad flash situation. Either you received a unit with mis-matched components of the DVD drive had a bad flash. Voltage spikes have been known to do this. I have a unit that belonged to my nephew so I know that no one had opened it. But it did the same thing. if you know that you have the original DVD drive for that XBox, the only alternative is to flash it and retrieve the code. Then you will need to re-flash it with the original code.

  • Please reply ASAP, my vad 6038 drive chip is not as big as all the ones Ive seen on the internet. Mine is like half the size, what does this mean, how come if they're the same versions mine has a different sized chip. What does this mean? REPLY ASAP

  • my would not read nothing at all , so i did the same but now it reads the games as DVD movies , can you help

  • Hey I have have a BenQ Drive, but the board looks different. Also, I fried my board, and I was wondering what I could do about that. Anybody help?

  • @CashOrPoints2 Looks Like you are going to need to look into flashing.

  • Will this fix the "Open Trey" error?

  • @iceteaz If it is a physical problem with the drive that is the trouble.

  • Why are you changing the boards? I didn't hear the reason or maybe I didn't understand it.

  • LV - good video. Where did you buy your replacement BenQ drive? Are new ones available or just used ones? And does the new one need to have the same firmware as the old one?

  • @tjnoffy Thanks. I purchased mine from a company named Thumbmonkee. I found them on ebay and they ship really fast. I do suggest that you eject the tray of any drive that you purchase to make sure that it is not a refurb if they are advertising it as new. I made the mistake of opening the drive and breaking the seal on one and it still had dust in it. It worked fine, but you never know exactly what you are getting.

It doesn't have to be the same firmware, but it needs to be the same model.

  • burned myself a couple of times but thanks and playing my 360 back to normal

  • @lvproductions71 how do I tell ??

  • So will this work if I have a working pro disk drive and swap the mother board with my elite ?? Plzz help

  • @dc12345678910111213 As long as they are the same brand and model of DVD drive, yes.

  • @LVProductions71 If you do change the mother boards, you dont have to flash it or anything?

  • @conroth123 No, you don't have to flash it if you are able to use the original board.

  • Its nice to see someone other than a geek do this because it doesnt intimidate me as much. Thank you very much.

  • how do you take the laser ribbon cable out of the motherboard, i only saw you take them out of the laser . Then also how do you put the ribbon cable back in the motherboard?

  • I am looking for a more permanent solution to the open tray error, instead of tapping. This seems like my best option, but the soldering scares me, I tried soldering something else before and had no idea what I was doing and gave up because it was frustrating working with that soldering wire.

In your vid, it looks like you just touched the iron to the solder points and the wire just came loose and you just touched the solder points again to reattach the wire. Is it really that easy to do?

  • @WdnUlik2no It's not hard at all. Just make sure that the iron is hot before you start and don't hold it to the board too long.

  • do you need the original laser ribbon or do you use the new one?

  • @AirCougar02 I don't think it matters, they do not typically go bad unless they are ripped or crimped. I just think it is easier to remove it from the laser than it is to remove it from the board.

  • Thanks dude! Just ordered my replacement Ben Q drive. Was worried this was going to be difficult. Never soldered before. Looks like I have nothing to worry about. I'll follow up as soon as the drive arrives and let you know how it goes. Much appreciation!

  • @pimpnmatrixxrs Good luck and feel free to contact me if you need some info.

  • So if I had a working drive from an arcade system, would it work in a pro if I swapped the circuit board?

  • @ambrecooper If they are the same model.

  • could i switch out a broken xbox drive and put in a working one from another xbox????

  • @jaysick101 It has to be the same kind and you still have to change the board unless you are doing a flash.

  • Did all this but turns out my motherboard is fried is there anything else i can do??

  • @hbkjose1 The XBOX motherboard or the board in the DVD drive? If it is the XBOX motherboard, you're pretty much screwed. If it is the DVD board you can look into using something like jungle flasher to try and retrieve the key off the bad board. But if it's fried, this may prove difficult. If you can't get the key and flash it to a new board, then that's it. Your done. Sorry for the bad news.

  • Hey thanks for the video. Worked like a charm. For people who think its too hard: I have zero soldering experience and was able to complete the whole thing in 20 minutes. Super easy. I did burn the Sh*t out of my finger but its a small price to pay!

  • @AngryDuck9 Thanks, glad I could help.

  • would I be able to swap a phillips drive with a Benq as long as I use the original circuit board?

  • Comment removed

  • So if you put the original circuit board on the new drive you don't need to flash it????Please Help!

  • @protege12 That's the idea and this does work. Just take your time.

  • It's always good to watch videos like these incase you run into an issue like this...

  • @mmr061485 Glad to help and thanks.

  • I just realised I have a LiteOn dvd drive, it looks identical to the BENQ, except for a bit of info on the top of the drive. Be sure which drive you have before buying. Thumb this up so people know, as I only stumbled upon this info when looking at flashing firmaware.

  • I just wanted to say thanks for this video, I had to do a bit of searching, I haven't tried this fix yet (still waiting for the drive to arrive) but it's good to know it's possible on the BENQ drives, soldering isn't a problem for me as I've had to fix laptops and chip PS1's but it's nice to know I have to solder it in, unlike the samsung and toshiba drives.

  • is it possible to do this without the solder

  • @mhorne86 I have seen were others spliced the wires instead. I would exercise caution with that method and make sure that you make good connections a possibly use liquid electric tape.

  • @LVProductions71 i decided to tak it the safe way and get the iron but im not sure how to get the wires off, i didnt exactly see where u were placing it in the video, is there any special place to put the iron

  • @mhorne86 The whole idea of soldering is that you are trying to heat the metal and the solder enough that they bond to each other. Since there is solder on both the wires and the board, you want to touch the solder where the wire connects to the board. Be careful not to hold it there too long or you can damage the board. If you lightly pull on the wire as you hold the end of the soldering iron to the tiny lump of solder. I'm sure there are videos on the subject here on youtube.

  • wat did you use to attach the wires off the logic board and where can i get it

  • @voNzMaN202 It is called solder, and you can get it at Radio Shack.

  • wat did u use to cut the wires off the logic board and where can i get it

  • Ya I have a xbox 360 2009 year elite. and it does not even look close to all the videos of cd roms I have found on youtube. So it seems to be sawderd on. and the chip is smaller then the one on this video. any good websites on the new drivers?

  • @rgandenberger you can try to contact the folks at llama.com. They way be able to shed some light. Just note the model and firmware version that you have.

  • @rgandenberger I recently repaired an Elite and the brand I got off of ebay was Dg-16d2s Philips , The outer case looks the same as the Benq but the motherboard sits more on one side and has yellow wires, hope this was helpful

  • @JoshJ05 Thanks Josh, there have been some changes to this particular drive since I made this vid so the fix may not work for newer models or you may have to improvise.

  • Thank you very much mate! Just replaced mine and it worked.

You saved me £200! Only took like 20mins too.

  • I <3 U

  • THANK U SO MUCH THIS SAVED MY LIFE!!!!. I spent more then 5 hours trying to flash the drive and failed. THis worked and only took me 10 min .

  • ive been having a problem with my xbox reading games. The games will start up but after about 5-10 minutes of play a random disc read error pops up. Is this due to a faulty laser/drive or is this a completely different issue? Can i use your procedure as a fix or no? Thanks

  • @klong123 A very good possibility. As the motor and laser get older, they get weaker.

  • if my xbox is already flashed but not reading disc if i do this with a new drive will it still read backed up games?

  • @pint1010 I'm really not the guy to ask mod questions but if all you need to do is replace the DVD drive hardware, it should be ok.

  • Question: What kind of solder do you use?

How do you exactly solder the wire onto the circut board?

    And how easy is it?

I never solder before and I dont want to mess this up?

  • @kJf1245 check you tube for vids on the subject.

  • Could you tell me which wires go where? I didn't do them one at a time like you, I didn't see this video and I don't know the order.

  • Ive never soldiered anything before in my life i am very good with pcs and was going to flash this drive till i came across this video how difficult is it to soldier for someone who has never done this? My local game store wants to charge me 40 bucks to do it.

  • @keithryan1025 It's not that hard at all. The key thing to remember about soldering is that you are not heating the solder as mouch as you are heating the components. In this case, very little heating is involved. The solder is already fluxed and is clinging to the metal on the board and on the wire. Just be careful not to apply too much heat to the board and don't pull too hard on the wires. Touch the connection with the iron and wait a second until the solder looks wet, then remove the wire.

  • @LVProductions71 I do appreciate it man this tutorial is amazing just made my life so much easier you could sell these videos lol. I do have to wonder Ive read there are 7 wires total are they color coated does it mater as far as the sides there on which wire goes where?

  • @keithryan1025 You are welcome. As far as the wires go, they need to be swapped one at a time to insure that they go in the same place. The white wires are the ones that I do not think matter that much. The two white wires on the right got to a switch and the two on the left go to a switch. The black and red wires power the various motors. But them back exactly like to take them off.

  • whats the difference between lite on and benq please repond

  • Where is everyone ordering their replacement drives from?

  • Comment removed

  • do you need to replace the laser too or just the mother board? : )

  • philips drive is the light on drive right?

  • what tools do you need

  • where's the best place to pick up a new benq drive?

  • I finally got my new drive and my xbox 360 works like new thank you so much. This really works!

  • @worldlycomet1 I am glad I could help.

  • Thanks LV, I have to wait for the new drive and I will do that - thank you for responding and for your help

  • Does this read xbox 360 games or just DVD's ,please respond (anyone)

  • @worldlycomet1 This replaces your DVD drive in your XBOX so that you can play games. But you have to use the original board from the drive you are replacing or it will only play DVD's.

  • Thank You sooooo much. It works perfect & was very easy to do. It just took some time. I was so sick of that open tray error and tapping my xbox to make it work. Now I can just play! I read about flashing dvd drives and that is an extremely huge hassle to do. This is far easier.

  • ok, so... I did this and it worked like a charm... until the last wire I was attaching to the board. I don't know what happened, I guess I melted it too much, but the metal plate you solder the wire to came off. it's attached to the wire so I can still manipulate it without getting burnt. Is it possible to reattach the plate so I can f****** play my games or am I screwed? Also, if yes, how? Just solder it back on?

  • @GhostToast5647 You may have to order a circuit board repair kit. There are kits that will repair the break in the circuit, but it is not easy to do. You can follow the circuit and see if there is another point that you can solder to, just make sure that you are not jumping any components like a resistor or diode.

  • Thanks for posting the video, my benq drive has just crapped out and i'll be doing this myself as soon as the replacement arrives.

  • i just did an complete swap, with my circuit board with the new drive i got and i'm still getting open tray error, is my circuit board dead, or do i have to flash it.

  • @75edainsworth I would venture to say that the replacement drive is bad, but there may be a problem with a board. How did the initial problem develop and where did you get your replacement drive?

  • @LVProductions71 the problem first started with it not wanting to open, then open try disk error, i got my replacement disk drive from my friend who's xbox rrod due to over heat problems, before i made the swap i plugged his in to mine to see if it would spin up and read an dvd, witch it did no problems, after the swap was made i put the drive with my board into place and it did the same thing as before open disk error .

  • @75edainsworth First off, you should not have hooked it up that first time although it doesn't explain the problem. Are you sure you didn't get the parts mixed up or anything. Does it read movies and cd's?

  • Thanks LV, i knew i had to replace the board but wasn't to sure how. Perfect guide and keep up the good work.

  • this may be a stupid question BUT what is the drive doing that you have to swap out the chip instead of individual pieces?

  • @syxx297169 It really is not a stupid question. Fact is, you can change parts to repair the drive, but it is like this; A "no read" situation can be cause by a slow motor or a weak laser and unless you can test the output of the laser or the speed of the spindle, it is cheaper to purchase the whole unit. You may get lucky and replace the correct part first, but if not, you are going to need to order the other. It is just better to replace all the components at one time.

  • What if you changed the laser and it works for two weeks and then the motor goes or the door stops working? Get the point? Still, not a stupid question at all.

  • thanks allot ill be doing this very soon, this video helped me a ton!!!

  • youre my hero.

  • After you fix it using this procedure can you still use xbox live?

  • Nice video,

I just had my buddy flash a one of my xbox's with LT.

And now it doesnt read games. (Put game in, and it says open tray".

Would this work? Just swaping the drives... Or is it a problem in the "dvd motherboard"?

  • @thormx47 Only if you have not flashed the original drive. If you flashed the original and you did not keep the "key" then you are screwed.

  • y cant u just buy any other working disc drive and put it in ur xbox...wut will happen if u do tht?

  • You will be unable to play games and you could ban your xbox.

  • Hi! I have dont the fix with all dvd drives up to the new Liteon drive and I need to know if I can do the same with it?? Please can anyone tell me!

  • I have been looking to find out if you can do this with the new Liteon dvd drives? I have done it succesfully with the benq and the older ones, please can anyone tell me!

  • Dude thanx alot!!..

just done it on a phillips liteon after getting the open tray fix ..

    works fine . :D

    thanx

  • Happy gaming!

  • Please Make A Video How To Get Magnet Out Coz No Other vids Show That.

  • thanks for the video one of the best ive seen changing the benq drives. i have one question though, if i get the exact same benq dvd drive and swap boards over, can i just flash it with the ixtreme fw so i can play the copied games or do i need to extract the old key and then flash it to the new board then flash with the ixtreme fw?? sry if its a noob question jst wanna get it right.

  • @MDMA1064 To be honest, I know nothing about flashing a drive for those purposes. I don't mod the software in any way when I fix these. You are going to have to look elsewhere for stuff like that. If you fix the hardware, yea, you can do anything you want to with the repaired drive.

  • thanks so much buddy

my son and i followed your instructions last night and it works great thanks again..

  • Hey, followed all the instructions.. Still not reading the disk. What's next?

  • Does it go to the white screen or just says open tray? It is always possible to get a bad replacement part. If you bought it used or from someone on eBay, you increase those chances. If it simply will not read discs, but you can hear the drive working, odds are the drive is bad. If you are getting the white screen that says Xbox 360, you may have mixed up the parts. The point is to change the drive, not the board.

  • Just swapped out my drive and it worked like a charm!!!! Thanks bro, you saved me $120 for a new xbox.
