Dark clouds are much closer to camera position than the mountain. Their 'relative' height would be such that they would block sunlight from the snowcap if they were actually over the range. As you see, this is a funnel over the lowlands of the foreground; distant mountains are merely the backdrop giving an illusion of a funnel dancing along the ridge. This funnel is close in and very high in the air never anywhere coming close to the ground.
@Derail07 That may be so, but we've never seen anything like that up here in Leadville before as far as I know. So actually, it is WIN. This is the first real funnel cloud I've ever seen, probably because I've lived up here at 10,200 feet all of my life.
@Derail07 - That is crazy, Yea I go fishing in Ontario Canada and 3 men were killed by a tornado a few years ago. One died in a cabin and two died in a boat. Tornado's are extremely rare in Canada
Worlds highest tornado? The news article that linked me here said that they had observed tornadoes as high as 12,000 feet in the past, but Mt. Massive is a 14'er.
@Epotheros From what I understand it's not actually a tornado because the funnel never touched down. It was just a cold-air funnel. That doesn't change how rare it is for this location. We've never seen anything like that here before (at least the locals I've talked to haven't). I guess cold-air funnels are more common on the coast.
"These types of funnels are unlike the ones associated with severe thunderstorms. They typically occur with partly cloudy skies when there is a great deal of instability in the atmosphere. The cloud is unlike a tornado because it is not created by a super cell thunderstorm. " according to 9news.com

Cold weather funnels are somewhat common here in Montana. But they're still pretty freaky. I've seen one before, about two miles north of my house.

amazing that a funnel would happen at 11,000 ft give or take. I like the blue sky and it looks like fresh snow in the back ground

@Derail07 ummm you obviously haven't been here. I've done a history video of the town and from what I know this has never happened.
Thanks for sharing! Glad someone was able to catch this on video -

powermann9 1 year ago
@powermann9 Apparently it's a "cold-air funnel."
