only eddie can play that unique sound, you can tell by the way he attacks the tapping, palm mutes, scale runs, pinch harmonics, tap harmonics and that warm brown sound!
Listen closely at 4:15.. that riff is the very end of Take Me Back (Deja Vu) from Balance.. played in 1984.. just brilliant.. like Eddie time warped for just 3 seconds.
@partatio That is when he wrote that riff. Eddie even talks about that in an interview he did in the 90's. Might even have been 'Behind the music ' right after For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge
This is how Ed practiced from his youth all thru his career, just sitting somewhere noodling and randomly playing, but those random tidbits turned into creative musical ideas.
I dont care what some of you guitar wannabees think, this is eddie van halen no doubt about it, sounds like him his style sounds the same, listen to van halen and figure it out man.
This is pure gold here. I would have killed to have had some of these old recordings when I was younger, but they're still valuable now. Eddie is in peak form here, and that tone is just crushing. It really doesn't get any better than this.
You can see me play in Texas . I was not cutting Eddie down please read comment again. I said " I don't think it's him" if it is then he is no longer What he was. Cheers mate!
@liquor1978-considering he was one of, if not the best , you must be pretty damn good and making lots and lots of money!!! If you can play as well as the master then I assume that you are or will be on a tour. PLEASE tell me when and where I can see you play!!!
@fredpfarnsworth you OBVIOUSLY do not know what in the hell you are talking about, so do yourself a favor and don't open your mouth. Your just showing people how ignorant you are! That is ABSOLUTELY Eddie!
Why doesn't David Lee Roth have rehearsal videos of him just howling n screaming n doing that raspy shit he does? haha but needless to say, VH killed that shit in the clip
@Schecter725 I hear a mix of past and present... :16 strikes my ear as nothing other than EVH soul you're hearing... the experiments at 1:13, 1:50, and 4:00 to 4:13 evolved into 'Get Up'... :31 through 1:04 is all 'House Of Pain'... 1:35 to 1:41 is a failed request for feedback (his guitar wouldn't give him what he wanted)... 1:54 to 2:13 is {amazingly} 'Top Of The World', 2:48 to 2:52 is 'Spanish Fly'... 3:09 to 3:11 reminds me of the intro to 'Mean Street'...
@jpuddesteragmailcom - 1:54 to 2:13 could also be the end of "Jump". The outro at about 3:34 and again at 3:50 of Jump is the just about the same as the beginning of Top of the World. Since this is supposedly recorded during a 1984 rehearsal, that makes sense to me.
I think this was before the recording of 1984. House of Pain is in here, but he wrote that song in the 1970s so it doesn't prove that its after 1984. He probably came up with the Top of the World riff just fuckin around in the 80s, and finally wrote a song around it with Sammy.
Listening to this makes it very clear: People can learn to play Van Halen songs, but no one will ever sound like Edward Van Halen. A controlled explosion of notes.
i remember this from the "guitarman" boot cd from the 90's. that said this was eddie jamming at 5150 and was a small section that was taken from hours and hours of a recording. who knows but it is from 1983 or 1984 sometime
The "guitarman" CD was mostly bogus, because the majority of the tracks were actually from a guitar instructional tape by Curt Mitchell. This gem, however, was tacked on to the end. And yes, it's real Eddie.
yes i know. i always thought they meant the end was from hours of tape but thinking back now i guess they were talking about the whole cd. thanks for posting! i sold that cd years ago.
man he plays with so much attack and feel, he sounds sick while he's playing around with the house of pain riff..

That's some heavy reverb. Or maybe he's just using his EP3 with the repeats turned totally off.
