I heard Shigeru Mizuki (creator) had a dark history before he made Gegege no Kitaro. During WWII he was in Papua New Guinea where he saw his friends die from battle and disease, he befriended a local tribe there, and he lost his left arm in an explosion so he taught himself how to write and draw with his right

When he came back to Japan, he wrote and illustrated the popular series Gegege no Kitaro, he also based some of it's stories off the horrors that he experienced in the war

True, he wrote alot of books about WWII. I also heard that one of his manga works was a biography about Adolf Hitler's life but in a manga form lol

He also wrote a manga titled 'Yamato', it's probably about the battleship Yamato from WWII though, but as a mangaka his 2 biggest works were Gegege no Kitaro and Kappa no Sanpei

WWII books was what he was best at, being a mangaka was his 2nd best thing

It's only a joke, of course we all know they're saying something else.

"Gegege" is actually translated as something like "creak, creak, creak" and is used in the old mangas as a noise people make when they're scared.

It has such a rich history, as does its creator. Funny how most anime fans have never heard of it, but Kitaro is as well known to the Japanese as Mickey Mouse in the states :)
