i don't think i've ever heard eddie get the last few lines of this song right. i swear i think he has a mental block. he almost got it this time, better than most.
@chknman So that means the only song you like on Vitalogy that was done by Irons was "Heyfoxymophandlemamathatsme" - the last track on Vitalogy because everything else on that album has the Abbruzzese seal of drumming excellence attached to it.
@Tigerpuffer For he was not. Maybe for Pearl Jam, Jack helped harmonoised the band and if he did, then that I can respect but in terms of drumming inspiration for me personelly? He was seriously lacking. But thats my OPINION, it does not mean I am right, it just means my Pearl Jam drumming roots come directly from Dave A from VS and Vitalogy. Ten (Krusen) was more retro-active for me and I appreciated it after I obtained VS & VITLGY. To me, something died when they got rid of Dave A. Peace.
@Scroteypoo: Dave A was a great drummer for the band's early stuff. But once they changed their musical style and became more an art-rock band (and I'm not shitting on it like some douche bags do, I'm listening to Present Tense as I type this) IMO Jack Irons was a better fit. None of their other drummers could match his groove and the way he held songs together. I like Cameron but I still think Jack was the best. And hey dont talk bad about Stupidmop xD

@Tigerpuffer I have no doubts about Jack being a better fit - its evidenced in the fact they they are still together. I guess my issue was the nature upon how Dave was dissmissed. Depending what you believe, it seems consistent that Dave was blindsided about his termination. Thats not his fault but obviously a greater problem that was shared among several band members. Had he just left on his own accord? Well maybe my view woud be more favourable toward the band overall.
@Tigerpuffer Yes I am well aware of that mate but Matt Cameron is not in this video and I was not critiquing Cameron's style when I said my first peice on this clip. I was commenting on Irons as it is him in the video.
@Scroteypoo: you said "I have no doubts about Jack being a better fit - its evidenced in the fact they they are still together" which kinda threw me off. :P
@Tigerpuffer Ahh yes. Sorry, I should have expanded that to mean a more generic context to say that PEARL JAM are still together sans Abbruzzese and Irons respectively, but that their (Pearl Jam's) longevity could be held to Irons influence as a result.
You know i tell You something.... Dave or other Dave or Matt are part of the band ...but Jack made a verrrrrryyy special atmosphere I Love No code album , and i think this is because of Him .
@reachdown76 I guess we can appreciate differing eras of Pearl Jam's history. I love the Dave A era as it had more agression and energy and it was RAW. I think that was what got PJ recognised from the get go. The Irons era was peace and harmonay and although I wish that disposition worldwide in present times, it did not sit well with me. Pearl Jam were lucky their debut album was not No Code as there is no way they'd have gone the distance if that was their first crack at an al"BUM".
watch jack irons....fuckin amazin on drums such an inspiration...the way he played , not only in this ...but on the NO CODE album as well...brilliant...absolutely BRILLIANT!!!
@pod7178 After the dizzying heights of the Dave A era, I can't help but feel anticlimatical about Irons' drumming. I respect the fact that you like it but I can not stomach his style for some reason. Sour grapes perhaps on my end?? I should get over it. However it was Dave A's drumming on "Go" which made me stand up and take notice of PJ to begin with. And sadly with him my attentioned waned when he was fired. But here I am commenting on a non-Abbruzzese song. Hypocrite? Most likely.
@Scroteypoo: Dave wrote most of the music for Go, did he not? He was definitely talented. Although if he and the band didnt get along, cant ask them to stay with him. We might not have Pearl Jam today if they kept him, since it seems him and Ed and him and Jeff really had tension. One of the reasons I prefer Jack to Dave is that Dave used the same bass-snare drumming tecnique in a LOT of songs... Go, Animal, Dissident, the fast version of Wash, Rearviewmirror.
@Tigerpuffer It was those beats that got me into Pearl Jam from the get "Go" ;-). I can't really picture those songs you mentioned with significantly different grooves. Its like saying Mike McCready uses the minor pentatonic scale far too much when he solos. I guess we can agree to disagree. Opinions and preferences are what they are. But I respect the banter and fully appreciate your resoning and your opinion in favouring Jack. Peace.
@MCRAdamSlipknot For me it is a tie between vs and vitology, then ten, yield, binaural, backspacer, no code, riot act, self titled. The last two or three may as well be tied up as well. It is really hard to choose which I like better.
@grimfail24 I have to admit that for me, Backspacer really sucks. I just can't get into it. But then again, everything after Yield has taken me a long time to get used to. May be because I completely disagree with Vedder's politics. Still a great band, no doubt, and they still write good music, but for them to claim that Backspacer is their best album yet (from an interview a while back) is crazy.
Hey, what's up everybody... I'm here because all of you guys are Pearl Jam fans, and because, if you can deal with a little bit of 'spam', I'm here to promote my new band Overshadowed. We just got done recording our demo, it's on our channel, and we'd love if anyone could simply check the songs, leave a comment, or anything of the sort. We'd really appreciate it!
FYI, I came HERE because we love and respect Pearl Jam, and are hoping for whatever respect you guys might have leftover...
@newmicrobot Still wrong. Nothing can beat Vs. in my opinion. Here's my ranking: Vs. No Code Backspacer Ten Yield Binaural Self-Title Vitalogy Riot Act That said, there is not a bad Pearl Jam album, so don't criticise me for putting Vitalogy and Riot Act at the bottom.
Mr. Gossard is bright orange, yellow orange, and red orange hatted. :) Indeed he likes orange. Maybe he like the Orioles. Or the Knickerbockers. Or the Mets.
one of my favorite songs. irons has so much technique happening here. this guy has to be one of the most amazing groove drummers ever. the way hes choking the hi hat and his ride/crash fits perfectly. true musician
@ohchityall I like how you commented on Irons' technique. Not many people realize he has such a different drumming style, so it's nice when people realize that. I've read interviews with Matt Cameron, when he's responding to "people's" complaints about him not playing the older songs in the same style. He says that Jack Irons' drumming is hard to copy not because of the technical difficulty of it, but of the completely different style that he plays with. As a drummer, I find irons' style diff.
@mrshock13 yeah man! thats the coolest thing about drums to me, you can have all the technique in the world, but try forcing a style of drumming and all is lost. no one can replicate matt..but always thought dave ab was the best drummer for this band. now i can see it's a progression that makes this band interesting..jack's recordings are so very perfect. ive always felt matt rushes pearl jam, not tempo necessarily but he's missing a style...guess its expected, gives us something to talk about!
@ohchityall Glad you guys notice it, too. Been with PJ from the beginning. I saw them in Charlotte on this tour. Dave Ab was a great drummer, but the band needed Jack Irons as they began to really blossom. It starts with Vitalogy . No Code and Yield are top notch albums, and it's because Jack Irons. He has a tremendous understanding for the feel of a song. I agree Matt does rush some stuff. Matt is excellent no question, but Jack took PJ to a different level, and Yield was the pinnacle.
@s1854 I disagree, I think Jack was awesome with Pearl Jam. No code is probably my fave PJ album. Neil's Mirrorball is also amazing which Jack plays on, he just goes for it, no nonsense artsy fartsy shit, just lays down a solid beat, thats all you need sometimes. Matt was much more suited to soundgarden than he'll ever be with these.
EXACTLY! I still don't get how so many --- except Pearl Jam fans --- skipped Mirrorball, yet fawned over Sleeps With Angels the previous year. That was a horrible LP! Aside from Yield, I still say Mirrorball is the best thing Ament, Gossard, Irons, McCready & Vedder did together in a studio. Seriously, that LP cooks unlike anything else in the "rock" category from that year.
One of my top 5 PJ songs and IMO this is the best version of hail hail live and I've listened to alot of hail hail versions :) PJ is the best band in the WORLD!!
I was lucky enough to be siting in the second row right next to paul schafer for this. Me and my two pals took a bus from Boston and slept on the sidewalk to get into this show.
@jokertt14 I was totally at that show in Toledo...my first Pearl Jam show, was going to school in Michigan at the time. Barely remember the show but I had an awesome time.

@lxvlx I noticed that too..probably the same reason he doesn't do alot of things on stage anymo like he use to. I miss the old Eddie but I still love the guy!!
@cis429 Not Many. when PJ was in their hay day.. there were None that did it better.. at One point , for Many Years Pearl Jam was my favorite band. indifference. hail hail. evolution. Go. breakerfall. some of my favs.
@thedayitriedtodie beautiful? ok dude..hehe...your definition of rockstar is a bit fucked up....i can name thousands who are and were butt ugly....umm....each one has their own rockstar persona imo...no need to be "cute" or whatever...but what i can say is that Kurt was banged by geffen, anton corbijn and mtv unplugged at the same time....i always thought that so nice job mr courtney love, you just got owned, r.i.p anyway
@thedayitriedtodie nah,not that im a fanboy, just that i have my own personality,as much as i like pj i dont fall for eddie's words, im an INDIVIDUAL who doesnt feels obligated to follow every opinion my fav artist says(& no,pj's not my fav band),its how i feel & im not alone in this, kurt had the chance to stop all but he didnt...pj did it in a time when they were the biggest band of that scene....kurt just bitched & kept doing fancy propaganda (like the ones ive listed before) for nirvana,FAIL
@thedayitriedtodie duh! i know all that, they were friends, people cared for kurt, its just a feeling i have that has nothing to do on what he did which imo he did it terribly wrong as oposite of ed..like when john lennon died...eddie van halen (i know..he's not on my favs, just to put out an example) couldnt cared less about the beatles (he claimed once that zeppelin was the greatest band of the 60s) but he lamented his loss like everyone else....its a general feeling, like a huge loss

@jokertt14 I was totally at that show in Toledo...my first Pearl Jam show, was going to school in Michigan at the time. Barely remember the show but I had an awesome time.

anyone know what was up with his (eddie's) facial gestures? .. and how come he dont do that no more
lxvlx 1 year ago
@lxvlx I noticed that too..probably the same reason he doesn't do alot of things on stage anymo like he use to. I miss the old Eddie but I still love the guy!!

@cis429 yes, there is, fucktard, have u heard of kurt cobain?
thedayitriedtodie 1 year ago
@thedayitriedtodie hehe...kurt? blow me...that guy was another mtv whore
theachtungtree 1 year ago
@theachtungtree
mm, not really.
but still the fact remains: kurt was more beautifull and better on stage than eddie, who is great, too.
thedayitriedtodie 1 year ago
@thedayitriedtodie beautiful? ok dude..hehe...your definition of rockstar is a bit fucked up....i can name thousands who are and were butt ugly....umm....each one has their own rockstar persona imo...no need to be "cute" or whatever...but what i can say is that Kurt was banged by geffen, anton corbijn and mtv unplugged at the same time....i always thought that so nice job mr courtney love, you just got owned, r.i.p anyway
theachtungtree 1 year ago
@theachtungtree
we aren't talking about their businesses.
fact still remains, kurt is preetier anyday, even dead.
u should reseach on how fuked up ur hero eddie got upon kurt's death, u might b surprised, fanboy.
thedayitriedtodie 1 year ago
@thedayitriedtodie nah,not that im a fanboy, just that i have my own personality,as much as i like pj i dont fall for eddie's words, im an INDIVIDUAL who doesnt feels obligated to follow every opinion my fav artist says(& no,pj's not my fav band),its how i feel & im not alone in this, kurt had the chance to stop all but he didnt...pj did it in a time when they were the biggest band of that scene....kurt just bitched & kept doing fancy propaganda (like the ones ive listed before) for nirvana,FAIL
theachtungtree 1 year ago
@thedayitriedtodie duh! i know all that, they were friends, people cared for kurt, its just a feeling i have that has nothing to do on what he did which imo he did it terribly wrong as oposite of ed..like when john lennon died...eddie van halen (i know..he's not on my favs, just to put out an example) couldnt cared less about the beatles (he claimed once that zeppelin was the greatest band of the 60s) but he lamented his loss like everyone else....its a general feeling, like a huge loss

Jack Irons the former Chili Peppers on drums!
"Jackys eyes are closed but he's right on course
Because he's guided by the invisible force
He drives a kooky-green Chrysler bad as anybody's Porsche
He's a working class drummer, he is STRONG AS A HORSE!"
