I think they added the Nanites in the last few seasons to make up for the fact that they could not logically add or even construct a feasably succesful premise for a new bot to enter the picture, let alone hop into the theater.

The show was canceled because of bullshit politics, it was actually one of their highest rated shows(may have even been the highest rated). Their policy is if a show's ratings don't go up, they cancel it. Despite being on during shitty time slots with almost no advertising, it was highly rated, but the ratings didn't increase, so it got canceled. I heard the new president who took over simply didn't like the show(the former pres was a big fan who never wanted it to go off).
