On MOVIE MODE, can we do manual focus? DSLR cameras are known to have this certain audio noise whenever you use auto-focus, so I just want to make sure that I can do manual focus.

If you dont get a fast card class 10 you won't get the results you want on video.

Shoot with tripod for best results at night.It is very good camera if you know how to shoot photos.Just play with the settings in manual mode.

You can also shoot RAW PHOTOS if you want to make a lot of changes to the computer.I have the same camera.highly recommented and good price.

I have had my 500D for approx 6 months now and i have only 1 concern , on continuous shooting mode the fps seems very slow and unless you have a fully charged battery it is even slower !

but it makes up for it in so many more ways , i love my canon !

Oh and it's not made just for Low light use, it just has a very high iso option setting incase you need it, the range is 100-12800 which is pretty good, I spent ages picking through the choices on the Market and really glad I settled on this one.

Depends where you are but I got this camera two weeks ago and it cost me £579 so I'm guessing it has come down in price by a fair amount. I would also suggest the canon as I'm fairly new to this but have a lot of friends that have been in this game for a while who said while there is absolutely nothing wrong with nikons, they just prefer canons. This is a first class bit of kit.

both, and really both cameras are top notch. When i am looking at buying a new dslr, i only look at nikon and canon, nothing else. Go to a specialty camera store, not best buy or anything like that cause there all kids working there who know nothing, but go to a specialty store and take pictures with both, play around with the interface, and whichever one is more user friendly to "YOU" is the one you should buy. Its all personaly preference you cant go wrong with either of those brands.

yea. u can convert mov into avi using free converter in the web. so having mov is not really an issue. besides...taking pictures are the primary reason for getting a dslr.

True, but if I'm gonna pay for something, I expect the features to work the way I wan them to. I've also heard that it has to buffer while taking HD video, fragmenting the video. I suppose this could be solved with a high transfer speed SD card, but I prefer CF.

I use Adobe After Effects and Sony Vegas, both of which don't naively support .MOV. I absolutely hate quicktime, so yeah, it is a turn off for me. Assholes are a turn off as well.

Like I said before, neither After Effects or Sony Vegas naively support the .MOV file type, they both require quicktime. I refuse to install software distributed by Apple on my machine. I don't understand why they have the Digital ELPH series that shoots in .AVI, but not the rebel.

What do you need it for? 500d has definitely more and advanced features than Nikon's D5000. But there are some limitations on both cameras. One more thing you need to do research on, as many reviews I have read, they say 500d photos are not sharp enough with a kit lense. (google samples). And it's lighter than D5000. But D5000 has its own features and plus points.

the canon 500d cause the video of the qualiy of the d5000 is like somewhat of a regular compact camera and it looks kind of fuzzy but its ok. id recomend the canon.

yes, but you shouldnt get a dslr based solely on the video quality, its a nice feature to have on the side, but not a decisive factor in my check list. Im more concerned about the canon's kit lens, which ive read is not as good as it could be... anyone know if i can get the canon with another lens in a kit? or if i can get the body only with a good priced lens?

Kit lens's are just that. Kit lens's. I got the kit, because its only around$80 more than the body alone. If you want the best lens possible for the money, get a 50mm fixed lens. If you want a pro quality zoom, it needs to be a f2.8, but prepare to pay.

It all depends on what you are looking for... I was gonna buy this camera because of the hybrid option, but when I saw specs that this camera has., shooting Full HD 1920 x 1080 in 20 fps.. WTF? This is not even a standard frame rate... I better go with the Panasonic Lumix GH1
