Wow -- Mary Travers is the freak'in "mom" mtRNA|DNA to Gisel Bündchen, among the recent decade's mega-top-dollar-paid fashions models ever...whereas, many contemporaneous critics et al narrow thinkers, discounted Mary's "strong looks" as, at best, a cruder version of the "Julie Christie school of peroxide-locks"; whereas, in retrospect--at least for newer generations--review of the ubber-graphical stagings, w/high-key lighting, proves my salient point. Not my type, but lookers all the same!
I still miss Mary so much. Even though this is a song where she doesn't have a solo, here mare presence just radiates. I got to see PP+M do this song at several of their holiday concerts.
Today is "All souls Day" and I remember with gratitude all that Mary Travers brought us through her gift of music. Lord have mercy on her beloved soul - Rene
In 1966 I taught my fraternity this song, entered us in Greek Sing and went from last place in 65 to first Thank you PP&M Thank you for that and so so much more. Newport Folk festival early 60s every summer and so many other places I sat and listened in awe and knew I was in musical heaven. Mary now you are in heaven with choirs of angels. The tears I now cry are of joy for the half century of music we were all blessed with rest well Mary
@pbesmer well in that genre maybe, but King's X and Rush are two trio bands that have a surprisingly amazing full sound, and you forget they're a trio sometimes
PP&M was my first album. Their music formed my life in many instances. G-d bless Mary Travers and the fond continuing work of Peter and Paul. They have brought many tears to me over the years.
The old English custom of "soul-caking," or "souling," originated in pre-Reformation days, when singers went about on All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day, November 1 and 2, to beg for cakes in remembrance of the dead. This is a lovely version of a very old song.

Thank you for Peter, Paul and Mary, especially Mary what a soul.
Sincerity of musicality that renders three, actually four counting the bass player, into one incredible singularity of beauty.......they were the best.
isn't it amazing the wonderful sound that can happen with 2 accustic guitars & harmonies. No fancy stuff just talent & blend different voices together. It is a lost art.
No one could possibly improve on this version of the song. It puts a smile on my face every time I hear it. "The streets are very dirty my shoes are very thin I have a little pocket to put a penny in." :)
i was so pleased to find this song . all my life , christmas wasn't christmas unless i heard a'soalin' at least once on the radio during the holidays . i love peter , paul and mary - always have , always will .
In Japan, Japanese lyrics are put onto the last verse "Now to the lord..." and have become an independent hymn. So I hypothesized that this brain-staying tune was synthesized from two different traditional songs in UK, Ireland, or US.
This is the original "Soul Cake". Paul Stookey wrote it together with Tracey Batteast & Elena Mezetti, based on the English folk song Hey ho, nobody home. First released on Peter, Paul and Mary's second album, Moving (1963).
@kaarekjohnsen Interesting, parts of this song remind me of the German traditional folk song "He jo spann' den Wagen an". Probably totally unrelated, though...
@pianoman74 You are right! I does remind quite a bit of that German folk song. And I don't think it's improbable that they are related. (By the way, I find that the title is "Hejo, spann den Wagen an".)
RIP Mary Travers... terribly missed, especially at this time of year. Love Peter Paul and Mary. They were truly an inspiration... not only to their generation, but for all of those to come.
I love this song so much. My dad taught me this song, and we sing it together every Christmas. But I know I'll never be able to do it as well as Mary did. RIP.
tranurse, they are definately NOT brothers, Noel Paul Stookey and Peter Yarrow. After over 40 years as a trio they might as well be family though. We will all miss Mary Traverse.
In 1983, I proposed to Mary after a concert in Louisville. My wife had to spoil it all and tell Mary I was already hitched.
"Well, Big Al," said Mary, "Call me old fashioned, but I just don't date married guys." What an exuberant laugh she had. I will savor that moment and all the songs she still sings in my heart until it is my turn to cross to the other side.
