I really can't imagine why people are raving about this movie that's got an incredible 94% on rotten tomatoes. I watched 9 parts or so and then stopped. It isn't funny, the plot is boring, as is the lead actress (Hortense), there's no chemistry between the players and the dialogues are dull.

Really a case of neither fish nor flesh, not funny enough by a long shot to be a comedy, certainly not a gripping drama and the entire thing appears to be an amateuristic intent to promote...

EVeryone who comes from a working class family but have become middle class later in their life loves this movie. My parents cried throughout teh whol movie. But if your'e a brainless idiot like you, of course you'll not understand anything. Go watch Transformers! Sorry for my english.

@suddenlyitsobvious I highly suggest watching it all the way through to the end. This movie had me laughing, crying, and feeling a wide variety of emotions. The actors portrayed their characters to a tee! The dialogue is amazing and the timing is perfect!

Mike Leigh knows how to hit you in the gut he presents people in a real and true way that is hard to duplicate in film. His characters as so warm.

I first saw this film accidently when I was eleven years old; after being bombarded with blockbuster fare for years. This movie made me realize how much film can do, Leigh introduced me to film and gave me the idea to branch out with my film watching~ for that I'll be forever grateful by continuing to purchase and watch his creations that are so true to life~ Will be getting Another Year soon!

i love the opening at the funeral with everyone singing How Great Thou Art and you can feel the sadness. Thats was so fantastic about Mike Leigh's films they present people so real and 3-D it's like a punch in the gut.

@musiqtube1 Haha... don't worry, it's not really a British thing... I think Cynthia is just too emotionally unbalanced to stand up for herself and Roxanne knows this so she frequently snaps at her. If I told my Mum even now to 'shut up', she would probably clip me one (and I'm 22). :)

Love love love Secrets and Lies. I've seen it many times. It debuted at the Telluride Film Festival in which I attended. Swingers, Fly Away Home, and Beautiful Thing also premiered that year. You have awesome taste in film.

@DragonflyNoir10 We're in complete agreement. In fact, I could care less about seeing a big budget mass-oriented movie with special effects. I'm drawn to movies that show something authentic and unusual. I recently saw Writer/Director Rebecca Miller's The Private Lives of Pippa Lee starring Robin Wright Penn. It was superb. I also just watched Director Todd Haynes Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story, a 43-minute film told with Barbie and Ken dolls. Fantastic; I loved it!

I recognized her immediately from this movie but racked my brain trying to remember the name. I went on IMDB to look up WOAT and found her name which lead me to remembering this wonderful movie.
