Hehe - so interesting to see all the discussion of the music and the theories behind why it was used. When I made this video a couple years ago I used the theme from the movie Brazil because I just adore Terry Gilliam films and that one is my favourite. But lets not break the illusion here! Your reasons are far more awesome than mine!
This is what going to happen. When the elevator goes half way. it's going to snap. The tower collapse and the people fall from the sky. Or when it comes down the elevator is going to burn to smithereens.
But what will the bored astronauts listen to (not even an array of fancy illuminated displays & buttons to watch, just up/pause & down, & no violent multi-G forces) ? There will have to be a new category of music, Space Elevator Music.
So, it seems they plan on building the first space elevator here in Brazil... (well, the equator line crosses the north of the country, so its a nice location for the elevator!)
Woooah, I had no idea people we're actuallying trying to build space lifts! Thought there were still just the preserve of great thinker and sci-fi writers, quite looking forward to this years 1km challange!

Lets build it with a gasoline pipeline connected to it so it can refuel gasoline space stations in space also.

Isn't that the music from Wall-E?
FlowCell 2 years ago
Its the main theme of the movie "Brazil" (Terry Gilliams film about a future dystopia)
beechamDesign 2 years ago
That's interesting, because Wall-E was about a disutopia.
And yes, here it is: /watch?v=UblUO0LjPUg The song starts at 0:49.

Took me a while, but now I get it, and boy is it a fitting song! :-)
("Aquarela do Brasil", the mother of all elevator music...)

If you ask me, I think the mother of them all is a tittle better deserved to "Little Spanish Flea".
/watch?v=BmFDPFKTOvk Listen and then you decided for yourself.

What would happen if a plane flew into the ribbon?
hilostudios 2 years ago 2
a plane flying at under 1km altitude?
I imagine the 1km ribbon would be destroyed
roidroid 2 years ago
I meant if they actually make the elevator one day. I guess they would have some sort of flight regulation put in place.
hilostudios 2 years ago
iirc there are ways to oscillate the ribbon to avoid regular objects such as satellites - natural or otherwise.
roidroid 2 years ago
there will probably a no-flight zone around the elevator
