I lived on Saipan for 2 years- to this day people still find 500lbs unexploded bombs in the jungle (usually from clearing area for new houses) and hand grenades which I actually found one while weed whacking behind our rented place. This same story pretty much applies to Guam as well- bombs are still a threat to local construction. Kind of ironic that now Japan bombs these islands with tourist !
@xCh34pShOtx these were the japanese. they had suffered a case of a "victory disease" thinking that they were unbeatable. I reckon that it has something to do with some ancient folklore; just like the Kami Kaze word
Am I the only one who can't stand this series? It just seems so cheesy, like hey let's repeat what's already been known for 60 years but claim it's new and render it in CGI for extra measure.
@HelenaXVI OK no one else will respond to this so I will. Your post is 100% incorrect. There were isolated cases of Marines / Army raping women, but very few. I don't know where you got this info from but it wholly false. I did about 20 min of research and find that there were less than 100 cases of rape reported and many turned out to be false. Once the natives found out that the US troops wouldn't hurt them the false reports stopped.
No that Saipan would be one of the Islands where the IJA/IJN convinced the Japanese people living there to commit suicide because the Americans would rape them and eat babies. Buncha jolly tricksters those Japanese Officers.
@Pellicius My grandfather was on the USS South Dakota battleship during the battle of saipan, his job was to help load and clean the 16 inch guns. He still has hearing problems today because it was so loud.
I really appreciate this footage. My dad fought in this battle. I have a Jap sword that he brought back as a souvenir . It sits in my living room next to his flag.
The best part of watching these WWII shows are the stories of the Vets tell who actually fought and lived through this hell in the Pacific. God bless these men!
these are real men of honor........my heros,i grew up watching war fils................and i really loved this series and my grandfather too...he fought in africa......
Banzai attacks were the biggest mistake by the japs. Its suicide storming entrenched solders armed with automatic/semi automatic weapons. The japs should concentrated with mortar and artillery fire before storming teh US trench
My great uncle Marvin was lost in this war. What horror. He was my age when he died, what a life of luxury I live in today. God bless those men, and God bless America.
@jrask If there is any way of doing justice for all those who have died in the past is to not forget their acts of courage, sacrifice and ultimate bloodshed. It kills me today to hear little ignorant punk rejects saying how they hate history and how they care little about learning it and how they think it is meaningless, preoccupied with their lust for consumerism and technology which has turned our youth into a bunch of zombies. why give kids veterans day and memorial day, they dont care.
@SSSDiaz7 wise words! im from sweden we were not even affected by the war but the consequenses of it was felt as much here as any other country in europe. And it just angers me that no one seems to care about history saying its useless, and on another hand the same people says we should work to prevent war instead of looking at the past....well how can we prevent anything from happening again if no one remembers what to prevent...All honour to the allied soldiers who fought against fascism
This narrator is same one as from Ancient Warrior.
As for the bunkers, the islands are made of lava rock which is optimal for tunnel and bunker construction. There was no lava rock in Europe other than the odd chunk a tourist from Guam or Hawaii brought back home.
@shelayne4 well he did something brave, god bless your father, god bless all service men, veteran or even ones who weren't in a battle, they still count. ;)
The funny thing about the bombardment of the Japanese-held islands were that they would be more use in the European theater than the Pacific. Some bunkers were solid rock! The bombardment wasn't effective because the ships were firing inaccurately, and didn't know where the enemy was. Only a direct hit on a bunker(and they were pretty hard to damage, due to shells being splash damage shells) could destroy a bunker, or at least damage them.
I'm wondering how many American men were lost for the 400 yards of beachhead? Man, there will never be a generation that fought like these men! Semper Fi!
Sadly, the naval bombardment was more for moral than for effect. The BB's fired for 7 continuous hours prior to DDay, but from ranges exceeding 10000 yards. Area fire is not point fire. The group had no training or experience in shore bombardment as TF 58 was a surface engagement group. TF 53 had all the experience and only showed up on DDay, was then restricted on ammunition, and had targetting restrictions placed upon it. SNAFU
Yes and no. Point fire from distances much closer than 10000 yards (especially for the small guns) was necessary for anything close to effective landing prep or operational fire support. It was a slow and painstaking process and had to be specifically trained for. The sad part of Saipan was that these issues were already well known from prior landings and were supposed to have been specifically planned for.
Thanks CrtnFan21, I try to be correct in the moment. ;~)
As you're a fan of the US Civil War, do you note it as Rome fomenting internecine warfare (manuevering the North into attacking the Calvinist Southern States), prior to turning their political will on Washington DC?
The Americans were very lucky during this time because the PROJECT DAIMOS AND VOLTES V was not yet made.. ^_^ V.. PEACE SIR..!!

Bombings also cause psychological stress and the smoke makes visibility less for the japs

Apologies, the old BB's, Cruisers and DD's of the JEF showed on D-minus 1, giving only 1 day of somewhat effective pre-landing bombardment.

Yes. Most bombardments in the Pacific caused minimal to moderate damage at best. They seemed more compentent with called in fire support

abbesieyes, You are absolutly right. The only way to take out a Japanese bunker was a direct hit from a battle ship (BB).
