Falwell wasn't aiming at purity, though. He was trying to make money off of people that were already predjudiced and was purposely inciting hate for his own personal gain. Falwell was a very complex character. His self righteousness pissed me off and I disliked his type of religion. At the same time, as you see here, and as I saw in an appearance he made on Bill Maher's "Politically Incorrect" he could also be very jovial and charming and I get the feeling he genuinely liked people. Even those he didn't agree with. I think he believed there is good in all people. And he also showed an ability to laugh at his own expense. Interesting person.
He might have been sincere in his beliefs. But he was a decisive figure, who perpetuated a climate of hate and ignorance. He never understood the importance of questioning faith and being humble, or the possibility that his point of view might not be correct. At least I never saw that side of him. Falwell wasn't aiming at purity, though. He was trying to make money off of people that were already predjudiced and was purposely inciting hate for his own personal gain. I was a bus boy at Crown Sterling Steak House in Lynchburg Va. Falwell visited often and was a massive red meat eater. It was a very prestigious resturaunt, and falwell could come there without being disturbed. Also this was in the late 80's which may have been before his superstar status. Just a thought. peace

Xtian's spend their time helping the poor, surely you've noticed that, go to any soup kitchen, there is one near you!, not warring. What is the moral knowledge atheists are spreading? No-one is under compulsion to give $'s, it's up to you, unlike the IRS ;)

@metanosis But not only Christian's do charity at soup kitchens, I volunteer at soup kitchens, and food pantry's and I'm atheist. I'm not saying religion is all bad, many great people are christian, jewish, hindu, muslim, and atheist. I'm just saying that Jerry Falwell is pure evil and he goes for old ladies checks to build his empire just like Pat Robertson and the rest of the "Moral Majority". What I have been told by fellow atheists is just be a good person you don't need fear to do that.

From what i can see, Liberty univ is a great school, if $'s went there,spent more efficiently than the gov would! again, NOT compulsory, voluntary! Good person? Falwell was a very complex character. His self righteousness pissed me off and I disliked his type of religion. At the same time, as you see here, and as I saw in an appearance he made on Bill Maher's "Politically Incorrect" he could also be very jovial and charming and I get the feeling he genuinely liked people. Even those he didn't agree with. I think he believed there is good in all people. And he also showed an ability to laugh at his own expense. Interesting person.

He might have been sincere in his beliefs. But he was a decisive figure, who perpetuated a climate of hate and ignorance. He never understood the importance of questioning faith and being humble, or the possibility that his point of view might not be correct. At least I never saw that side of him. All I saw was condemnation and small mindedness.

To be honest I doubt he was honest in his beliefs (if your talking about Falwell) as much of his audio legacy seems to be contradictory. He seemed to be in it for the status and for the money, but I might be wrong.
