  • good stuff

  • whats the brad and the model of the pump you are use..i need one

  • oooh i need to pee

  • Spin off of the barrelponics system

  • Nice little setup. I don’t know if anyone else has mentioned it, but instead of using that toilet flush you could probably use a bell siphon. Also another thing I've seen is the use of a venturi at the drain inlet to the fish tank to help draw air into the water as it drains into the tank. Less moving parts to have to worry about. I'm planning something using some 330 gallon IBC tanks.

  • Do you have a video showing more?

  • you move the cam tooooo much and yours is a bit complex by the look of it why my friend

  • really cool pretty smart

  • Thank you for the prompt response.. Summers not an issue, and I was worried about the winter, this winter has been mild and the nights are running 20's outside, but 70 inside while I have the fire up.. by morning it has dropped down into the 50's, so that would be a nightly issue. As long as they survive, then i'm content, even with slower growth :) sounds like I'll be setting one up around February, about to hit the road for a month so cant now :)

  • @seballee Awesome :) Good luck with your system, and take it from me, they are much easier than most people are led to believe. The system kind of configures itself as far as the bacteria and nutrients go, it's pretty cool to watch. Another thing to look into is low voltage water heaters. Use that with a christmas tree timer to go on maybe the coldest 4 hours of the night? could work and be low cost..

  • I"m curious, you say that Tilapia are able to handle extremes in cold.. I would like to set myself up a system like this, but worry about the cold.. I'm off grid, and tend to keep the house cooler in the winter to not use as much wood in the stove.. how cold can they take it overnight?? wouldnt be uncommon for the temps to be in the 50's

  • @seballee I THINK that mid to high 50s could be okay if its only for part of the day. It is possible the fish could be stunned though, which jsut means they will eat and grow slower, but still function. Give it a try. Also run a search for "cold water catfish, suckers, tilapia"

  • Great video.

  • Great content. Made a bit difficult because of the frantic camera.

  • for a weight instead of a wrech use a peice of iron it will help yours plants to as iron rust in water the iron will flow to your grow bed you planet need it

  • good job tip for next video dont move the camera around so fast

  • awesome video dude. looking to start my own first aquaponics system.

  • Gracias

  • The day will come which i´ll need your support. Great video CondemPatriot!

  • If you want a balanced system, you need a ratio of 1 to 1, that means that if you have a fish tank with about 300 gallons then your grow bed needs to have a volume of growing media of about the same, more is fine, but less is not good for a balanced system.

  • In this way, a passive chinampa system is created without using any power at all to produce food because it is a close-loop biosphere based-food production system that is self-correcting for it uses nature's flora and fauna species in a well arranged way that makes it inherently self-correcting and self-regulating. How many people it can support depends on what plant and fish species are being used and how the system is being well managed by simply inspecting-protecting it from sabotage.

  • Use a floating cage water hyacinth to prevent water eutrophication, a floating caged azolla that fixes nitrogen, a balanced floating caged cattail structure. These plants will keep the water fresh, oxgenated, providing additional aquatic edibles. And using a bed mixture of zeolite, diatomaceous earth, & azomite to transform fish wastes into fertilizer to feed the phytoplankton algae feeding the tilapia and/or planktonic carp. Wt a floating chinampa like garden-farm covering 1/3rd of the surface

  • what do u feed the fish...

  • Awsome video! Keep up the good work!

  • out of all the videos I have been watching over the past few months trying to figure out in my own mind how I can do this, yours is the only one In can follow THANK VERY VERY MUCH Many Blessings to ya

  • Awesome video man...

  • You should go solar, mine is completely self sufficient. You can get a 12v bilge pump for about $15

  • @darbee63 hi how did you go solar? Do they sell solar water pumps?

  • @lhcinfo1 , I use a 12v bilge pump you can get in the fishing section at walmart. My solar panels charge 12v batteries which feed the 12v pump. The pumps are 600 800 and 1100 gph pumps, so depending on your needs you can size accordingly.

The solar panels I got from Northern tool. No more electric chords strung everywhere or worries of 110v and water. Plus no worries about power outages, A lot of people doing this will lose everything when they lose power, hope that helps:)

  • hey how long and often would u say the water pump should be turned on ?

  • so cool thanks :)

  • I like it!

  • What's the website?Thanks.

  • Where do you purchase your initial Talapia??

  • Hey this is exactly what Im looking for, I intend to make a system that incorporates duckweed into it also. Good Job, Thanks for sharing!

  • Hey Your doing great work there man i just wanna know what you feed the fish and what other type of gish could you farm in that systems

  • MORE DETAIL!..This is cool!

  • This is so cool. Only bad thing is, I'm vegan. I wouldn't know what to do with the fish, but I absolutely love the innovative idea behind aquaponics. I just wish there were some way to have fish that just die off naturally in a reasonable amount of time. Then i'd just bury them in my outdoor garden. Silly, I know..but I'm just too kind-hearted to eat them. :-(

  • @CimaraNyx there are a lot of vids utilizing ornamental vids. You can use keywords such as goldfish or koi. I have even seen crayfish and turtle setups. Though I'd avoid the turtles for an edible plant setup. hope that helps. good luck.

  • @CimaraNyx Build something like this and sell the fish as extra cash. Or depending on your level of a kind heart find a way to have the fish picked up monthly to feed the poor and hungry people in your area. Set up times for people to come pick up free fish and tour your system for inspiration to build their own. This is an amazing idea. I'm pumped to try this out too.

  • @g7h9o9s7t i stay i africa and believe this is the technology we need. We dont need macdonalds and imf loans we need innovation

  • @37shesh Then start something! I've known people who went to parts of Africa to teach these very things to the people there, they helped set up and did most everything for the Africans they could, then the Africans lost interest and let it all fall apart.

Quit talking about all the things others need to do to help You and get off Your lazy butts and do something for yourselves besides try to kill eachother.

  • @Oldbmwr100rs Or the African dictators confiscate it from the people.

  • keep in mind it took him a week to do

  • Thank you so much for this video.

  • awesome video! you are doing a great thing, guy of the future. I like how you implement the duckweed and the efficient use of the pump/energy, space, etcetera. I do have a ? tho- Im a big fan of bsfl (black soldier fly larvae)& can't help noticing there was no mention of em- they could help fatten the fishies and get rid of your leftovers that you don't want in your compost pile. can u breed them there? black soldier flies rule! and they will love you with all their heart (till they go 4 a swim)

  • @jumpingelephant33 Thanks for the comment, and yes I am a huge fan of black soldier fly larvae, they will absolutely be a part of my next system, just waiting for an opportunity to build it, been really busy.

  • @jumpingelephant33 bs, this guy is shit.. he doesnt even have any plants let alone growing.. Sure it is detail but he's not growing anything... come back when you have something to grow.

  • This is awesome.. the only thing I really am hesitant about is that with my attempts at being self sufficient, and wanting to do something like this, the electricity to keep the pumps running.. now, if you added a solar powered pump (would be pretty cheap for the size of this unit) you might could pull it off being completely grid free! Nice creativity!!! thanks for sharing and I hope to see updates on this throughout your upgrades and adding fish, etc...

  • This is the most fantastically brilliant, low budget, off-the-grid type of technology I’ve seen sense the $30 salad spinner centrifuge (Sally Centrifuge)!

How do you get the solids out of water without clogging the pipes? Also, how do you get the fish to breed in there so you don't have to keep ordering new fish to replace the ones you eat?

  • @ObeyBunny Hi, Tilapia (In my opinion) are like a plague. They eat everything and anything, can survive extreme weather hot and cold, and reproduce like rabbits on meth. This is why most people use them when making fish farms, hard to kill, fast growing, fast reproducing. They just do it themselves, that's why I put a screen over my pump so it doesn't suck up the young.

As far as the pipes getting clogged, I use a bilge pump that obliterates everything it sucks up. They are used for boat hulls.

  • If he did this with 30 dollars , somebody give him 1,000,000 dollars; so he can stop world hunger!

  • @stamp2241 unfortunatly world hunger is too profitable to solve mate :(

  • @37shesh i wish, you were wrong!

  • @stamp2241 best comment ever! Thumbs up

  • Respond to this video... Awesome video, great ingenuity on a shoestring budget.... and you're cute too!

  • @stamp2241 smoke another bong bro

  • This is a neat system.

  • why do you have that toilet flush system? Couldnt you just have it running continously over the plants?

  • @oliverjamescarr The root system needs oxygen as well. That's the reason all systems have cycles. The floating (deep culture) systems heavily aerate the water because of constant submersion. If the roots don't get enough oxygen, they will develop root rot & die.

  • Does it matter what type of gravel i use? I want to make one but im not sure what type of Gravel i should buy. I also dont want to pay too much for it.

  • Check out my system on my channel DJT77816

  • Okay, first question. :) I am going to be using 2 330 gallon tanks for my tilapia. Do have any idea how strong of a pump I need? And what fittings and size do I need? Thanks man.

  • Do you have facebook or an email address?

  • I see your in Florida too. Im in West Palm Beach. How can i find you on facebook? That way we can correspond more frequently.

  • @PalmBeachRealityTV Unfortunately I moved to California, but I will help you all that I can online, for no charge of course.

  • You are awesome. How can i find you on facebook? That way we can correspond more frequently.

  • WOW, amazing job. I was wondering if you would be interested in helping me with an actual setup on my property? Im trying to hep spark the urban food revolution in my state.

  • @PalmBeachRealityTV Where are you planning on doing this? I plan on making some insane ones this summer, incorporating solar power, I am even going to grow a tree in one lol.

  • Patriot, how often does the water have to cycle? Does the pump have to run continuously or can it just run every cycle?

  • @retlawless It cant run all the time or else your plant's roots wouldnt get any air and would drown, there is no cycle that is set in stone, just make it so it runs, fills up and flushes out and that your roots never get a chance to dry out. every hour is fine.

  • so how big of one could you create in a basement.....or do I need sunlight...or grow lights.......I'm thinking like a small kids plastic swimming pool......

  • @garlicdawg Ok, lot of information for a short question, here goes. You will need artificial light if you are in a basement and depending on what your growing it could be expensive. For example, one 400 watt High Pressure Sodium ballast, with bulb will cost you approximately 100$ and will only illuminate a 4x4 area, and it will cost you 20$ a month to run. You can check into LED grow lights they are FAR less expensive but will produce far smaller and lesser vegetables. Sunlight really makes this

  • What bacteria do you use and how do you incorporate them into your system?

  • @jocfncom I honestly don't know, but every time I've ever made one of these the bacteria grow naturally. I think it's impossible to avoid it...

  • very creative and industrious! thanks for the video!

  • Very ingeniuos. I hope you do very wellwith your system. You might want to invest in solar submersible pumps and save the cost of electricity.

  • Pretty efficient for a low buck system. I like how you said you got the gravel for free. Do people really pay for rocks these day's? I find that amusing.

  • this inspiered me

  • You can eat as much fish as you want without having to go by EPA standards for certain amounts, do to mercury levels.

  • @frankcoffee Wow lol, brilliant man, I never even realized that. Fish also have a really nice (almost perfect) ratio of protein and fat

  • やるね、あんちゃん!

  • Excellent explanation of your system man. Cheap and simple and sustainable very nice. BTW man are you a veteran just guessing from your posture and name..

  • Oh yeah and thanks CD for taking the time to put this up

  • FWIW I was fooling around with aquaponics using barrels-in 1992.

  • Awesome! :) Good job!!!!!

  • @ Barrelponic Your rant makes you look rediculous and stupid, you didn't pattent it because you couldn't pattent it. Made and constructed of repurposed items, much like a pet rock, a few of those sold, and some of us relized we could draw a face on any stone we wanted. Show some respect, without Plastic Barrels, Pumps, PVC tubing, the allmighty plastic soda bottle, and the hard work of Will Allen, your bucket of parts wouldn't have even been a concept to you. Kudos to CP

  • Wicked cool man we should all have these going; have you thought of growing snails or fresh water prawns at all... Id like to get all three going.

  • @bennywes yeah as soon as i get enough money to get some land I just plan on making huge ones, maybe even figuring out a cost effective way to produce family-sized systems that run off of solar panels and sell them for super cheap.

I don't know much about crustaceans and mollusks although I would think that they would be easier to care for, and eat less. Would be cool to have a giant pond filled with prawns.

  • @CondemnedPatriot sir they know have solar panel water pumps. from water airation to water pumping. they now have solar pumps that can activate by time and release valves.

  • nice job !

    it looks pretty nice

  • Nice work

  • no doubt dude ppl like us need to stick together...keep it up!!!!!

  • very cool setup dude.

  • YOU ARE PURE GENIUS! I am interested in doing a small scale setup like what you have here. I'm just in the beginning stages of gathering info but since I have a lot of pumps and filters and hosing ect. just laying around from my old pond I'm seriously thinking of at least starting out with a 20 gallon just for fun and to see how it would work out. Any tips?

  • @PCOStherealdeal

This is in no way his design. It was invented by Travis W. Hughey and is called Barrel-Ponics® and the manual on how to build it has been available since 2005.

  • @barrelponic omg... Even if you are who you say you are, shut up. Nobody is making money on this, you didn't invent aquaponics, all you did was to use barrels in your system and trade mark a name. Why don't you stop trolling on peoples channels posting bullshit. Why don't you make some videos and join the conversation?

  • @edpozek

For your information I am the fellow who wrote the manual you used to build this system. I coined the phrase and until I released that information noone was using barrels for aquaponics. I did not TM aquaponics as it is a general term but Barrel-Ponics® was invented by me. Show some respect.

  • @barrelponic You're right, you used a barrel instead of a tote. Good for you! I'm going to stop using your trademarked term as I don't want to get involved with this bullshit. ...Show some respect, give me break...

  • @barrelponic Guys, can either of you point out where in ANY of my videos I am taking credit for this system? As basic as it is? Yeah I used concepts I read about else where, and I did my own thing with what I learned. I didn't use your manual you egotistical asshole. In fact I NEVER EVEN KNEW ABOUT IT. Like I stated earlier, I just winged this, that's why it looks so shitty, no blue prints, no nothing.

And before you go off thinking you invented this, I saw aquaponics systems with...

  • @barrelponic ...barrels a over DECADE ago. The ONLY aspect that I did not come up with myself is the coke-bottle-release toilet thing.

And to end this rant, what type of low life finds the need to patent an easily constructed D.I.Y. hydro garden that feeds people?

Why don't you go try to patent the vegetables themselves like Monsanto you hack.

  • @CondemnedPatriot

First off. Let's get the facts straight. I did invent Barrel-Ponics and the bottle mechanism you are using (whether you got the idea from my manual or from someone who built it and you looked at it really doesn't change the fact that I invented it and have the document to prove it).. You can do a web search yourself and find this to be true. I published the manual in 2005. Now as far as a patent. I didn't patent it for the sole reason to make it available to the public..

  • @CondemnedPatriot ... at my own personal expense. Over 100,000 copies have been distributed since then. I did trademark the name Barrel-Ponics because I am using the name for systems I have available for sale and because I (whether you believe it or not) did invent the system and purchased the right to name it whatever I want and have that name protected under Federal law. I have no problem with people building aquaponics systems from barrels and actually encourage it. I am just saying....

  • @CondemnedPatriot ...name it something else. You're a creative guy and can come up with a unique name for it. Should be no problem. If you used as much creativity as you do profanity you would come across as an intelligent guy to the world. Your profane rants really do not add credibility to your position at all. As far as comparing me to Monsanto, give me a break. I can't stand what they are doing and what I am talking about is nothing like that. Protect my name is not the same as...

  • @CondemnedPatriot ...keeping people from building food production systems (aquaponic not hydro as you state). For that matter I have personally facilitated several projects around the world, not to mention the hundreds, if not thousands in operation because of the Barrel-Ponics® Manual. Not sure why the hostility. Sounds like you are an angry person.

    Sincerely,

    Travis W. Hughey

Inventor of Barrel-Ponics® and author of The Barrel-Ponics® Manual.

  • @barrelponic Thank you for your contributions to the human race, you are a gentleman and a scholar.

  • First off thanks a lot for posting on your AP system. It helped me a lot. I have a question. I haven't tried to grow duck weed yet but my friend has and cant get anything but algae to grow...any thoughts? Dano.

  • @danman911 Duckweed looks a lot like algae, is he sure its not duck weed?

If he is sure its algae then he should dump everything out and sterilize ( bleach water) his holding tank then start over. duckweed usually grows thick leaving little room and resources for algae or anything else so ocne you get it set up its easy to maintain. Gl.

  • Donald Duck Power: Now your food really is free.

  • oooh very cool. by the way, where could you get the live fish?

  • @whippet I caught mine in near by ponds, with a cast net. You can find them in most ponds throughout the world. But if you live somewhere where its cold, I think you can order them offline. Google search something like "Tilapia fingerlings"

  • LOL good all oldschool gadget making =) LOVE IT !

  • Go go gadget Aquaponics system!

  • dam macguyver, make me one!

  • GREAT VIDEO

  • Since you are pumping poopy water using the pump, do you have any problems with filters/clogging of waste material on the pump? Apologize my ignorance, I'm gathering the materials for a system but I don't yet have a pump and I don't know how it works. Thanks.

  • @DancesWithLlamas im using a bilge pump, they are designed for sucking out all sorts of crap and debris in boat hulls, i would recommend one. They can be pricey though, try posting on craigslist first.

  • Where do you get the bacteria? Or do you just assume they'll be in the gravel?

    Thanks bra.

  • This is awesome.... Thanks for posting

  • i have to give you props man. great use of materials. i have a larger system with 2 pools and deep water grow beds. something for you to think about. if your system produces both food for the fish and the plants what hapens when you harvest? the nutri went into the plants and was removed from the system. also if you want to exchange ideas feel free to contact me. also just saying high neighbor. i also live in florida. later bro

  • whats an update on this system?

  • I admire your ingenuity. Great Job!!!

  • do you have an update for us?

  • @oshienmikey7 sounds perfect, although HPS works better during the flowering cycle, you will notice a very large difference from MH if you switch. I am currently runing 4, 1000 watt hps's lol i might be making a video of it soon

  • @oshienmikey7 yeah you can clone a clone, but make sure your cutting is atleast 5 inches long. cut it at a 45 degree angle with a clean razor, and do not let it be exposed to open air for more than a coupel seconds, if an air bubble gets in it, it is doomed. The fish waste handles the nutrients, yes. but you need bacteria to break it down into a usable material

  • Well done young man I am in the process of building my first aquaponics system and I found your ideas great. Cheers mate

    Nige

  • you still got any of thos pumps?

  • I like this set up. I built a hydroponic system from scratch and am getting ready to try an aqua set up. Where did you get the info for the surface area of growing space per gallon of water and amount of fish/pounds per gallon?

  • I've been watching every one's videos on aquaponics and I'm wondering why no one uses catfish.

  • I've been watching every one's videos on aquaponics and I'm wondering why no one uses catfish.

  • Hey, dude, what is the address of the website you said on the video.

i wish to make a system like yours, but i dont speak english very well, so i'm gonna be very happy if you make a little diagram or something where i can see your mecanics aplications

  • Where do you get tilapia fish ? I only need about 20 BTW great video

  • Hahah.. I dig how Macgyver this is!!

  • Good stuff man, am currently putting together something myself, your vid helped heaps :)

  • As far as the fish, they were actually tilapia and siclets that I netted in a nearby pond.

Watch out for alligators if you are in florida. The site of the fish flopping on the bank attracted a 5 footer, that came right up the bank. THey are no joke.

  • I traded stuff I had sitting around the house for the expensive components of this system. I got 3 brand new 1.5amp bilge pumps for an old fishing pole I had. Use craigslist. And barrelponic: I did not intend to lead anyone to think i had invented this system, I apologize if it seemed I did.

  • very clever with the milk jugs! smart, cheap, and effective! 5/5

  • This reminds me of the blair witch project. Next time dont move the camera around so much...

  • how much for a pump? and how much for the fry?

  • You can get pumps from Aquatic Ecosystems. I use the WP33. Fingerlings are .50 each for 1" - 2" size plus shipping and handling.

  • As far as the gravel you are using, I suspect you will have issues wigh high pH. I would probably go with a neutral medai such as river gravel that is not limestone. Also, some have mentioned that there are issues with nutrient deficiencies. This totally depends on the plants grown, the feed for the fish to name a couple of vairables. I have grown just about every crop you can imagine (even fruit bearing papaya trees) with only the occasional addition of chealated iron.

  • Good variation on the barrel-ponics system!! I should clear up a few things though. FIrst, you state there are no blueprints on this system which technically is true but there is a free step by step manual I wrote (I actual invented it) on how to build a system with a flood tank very much like the one you have there (google "Barrel-Ponics"). You state you developed the system but in fact, did not. I did in 2004. This is not your original idea so please don't lead others to think so.

  • If you add a valve to the inlet to the top tank (also mentioned in the Barrel-Ponics Manual) youcan control the flow rate into the Flood tank and eliminate the timer you mentioned. The Flood Tank is a mechanical water timer, and solids settlement unit all combined into one. They can be built any size one wishes and I have built them from 5 to 700 gallons from buckets to ferrocement.

  • where can I buy talipia fry?

  • I sell them. Contact me and I can ship some once the weather warms up.

  • Tilapia eat damn near anything. They have an amazing digestive system and can live packed together, which is why they are the most common aquaculture fish. You can be creative.

  • what else do the talopia like to eat?

  • also beware of black plastic containers ect-The black plastic is cheaper to make because alot of recycled plastics ect are used to make it not virgin material so toxins are found in alot of black plastics-I used to work in several plastic plants I know this for fact! so therefor eventually the plastics release it int your system so be careful!

  • also check it out Sears has an submergibal pump that is guaranteed 4 life for like about 120 - Beautiful deal! it dies get it replaced or your money back just hold onto the reciept! also I know a place to get cheap timers also I know how to re generate charcoal that also helps to clearify and reduce amonia from water ect...Sunlight! yes soooo easy just clean up your used charcoal and allow to dry and set in direct sunlight for a day or two and presto your charcoal is ready to use again!

  • awesome man Please contact me I think we can really come up with something great!

  • Great job man, I love the improvisation, particularly your soda bottle pulley mechanism and your use of duckweed which closes the system's nutrient cycle. This is the sorta ingenuity we need in aquaponics, not these mega expensive overengineered systems u see elsewhere with automated fishfeeders and what not. Keep up the good work and plz keep posting vids.

  • How is your system doing. love your supply of junk to build with. I am going to the Dominican soon and this is just the thing to do. Do you know to get rid of that electric pump and use a bell syphon or autoflow, whatever it's called these days? :)

  • so hows it working out so fare?

  • Great Work!

I'm looking forward to videos as you progress with your project! I'll be doing a aquaponics system some day it gets to cold out side for talapia here in WA state though.

    Thank You!

  • cool system

  • thats really complicated but cool

  • TOOOOOO MANY CONTAMINANTS ! poor fish ...

  • just wondering whats contamanating the fish? :) i thought fish live in rivers and stuff that have rocks and im sure he cleaned everything... i dont realy see anything that would hurt the fish, unless you dont keep checking your water chemicals

  • the sediment clogs their gills . it makes it so they can't breath !

  • when you set it up right you let it run so that the sediment settle before you even add the fish. but i see that it could defiantly hurt or kill the fish if your not educated enough to see that could be a problem :)

  • yeah !

  • Well, the fish poop can build up...but it takes an aquaponic system WEEKS to go through it's ammonia-nitrate-nitrite SPIKES...they are necessary spikes to acclimate the water with all the bacteria cultures that are necessary to filter out the fish poop by itself.

  • Right On :D

  • You have obviously never seen a fish living in the wild....

  • can the duckweed "spores" or whatever transfer from the fish tank into the grow beds, competing for nutrients and space?

I ask b/c I know some states actually ban duckweed b/c ican become such a persistent invaded species.
