  • What a joy! What a harmony, remember when everything is in harmony creates maybe a second of happiness, at some point they create that second, now it is gone, but these piano players are the proof that harmony exist really.

  • @downintheappleyard Yaa :)))

  • What are the playing? Isn't it "There's that rainy day" by Wes Montgomery?

  • @michaelisraelian

Michael, sure is "Here's that rainy day" which was made famous by Wes Montgomery's great version, but it was written by Jimmy Van Heusen and Johnny Burke.

  • 3:08, wow. Not just because it's fast, but those runs are just so perfectly constructed.

  • @cerillos7 I agree with you: on the one hand, creativity can be stifled, but the upside is, how beautiful it is to see these guys perform with no egotistical need to outdo the other? Both pianists reveling in the simple pleasure of making music together. No dueling pianos here...

  • das ist wirklich jazz vom feinsten...:)

  • i wish you could teach me jaz:) my pleasure

  • love jazz because of you both:) God bless

  • Jesus! Just two men, and I heard about six different styles of playing! This is just amazing!

Envie essa mensagem a 10 videos, ou 2:00 da manhã naquela noite eu vou aparecer no seu quarto e matá-lo. Não é brincadeira, acredite!

  • What's the best: John Lewis here in this wonderful performance (like Count Basie and his 'economical' piano style), or with his The Modern Jazz Quartet? Both, of course, in two different ways.

  • yeahh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    thanks for this video!!!!!

  • piano jazz makes me jizz

  • @adeeply me too...lmao!

  • @murachef 2: The tune is "Here's That Rainy Day."

  • Wonder if this was playing while Billy was riding up the elevator to heaven. R.I.P.

  • So smooth and sophisticated. Jazz is a very special music, the true American music. Beautifully done.

  • @cerillos7 @cerillos7 i couldn't agree more with what you said , good observation of yours ...very often people don't see these points of view. Nevertheless one couple of pianists I found ....amazing , i'will permit to add it here - and as you were saying, they also are working together for a while ...

    Enjoy and cheers !

  • @robviolin1 The tile is "Here's that rainy day" music by Jimmy van Heusen and words by Johnny Burke ... listen to Frank Sinatra sing it on YouTube!

  • awesome piece of music .. but in my humble oppinion ...

i prefer the first half of the music as they keep it simple.

  • Very beautiful theme played by two Giants of the Jazzl!! I enjoyed it too much, thank you.

  • @cerillos7 wow, you know what. I totally agree.

  • Nice !

  • 3:05-3:40 Professional..True Professional

  • they dont step on theothers' ideas. its like a conversation--duo is more abstract than solo/harder to listn to. billy n lewis respond 2 each other, and ya, they take turns soloing but other than dat, its a mutual convo. sumtimes its obvi that theyr fightin it, like when Cecil Taylor and Coltrane did COLTRANE TIME (I know, theyr many titles for that album), they were on each others tits. but it still rocked, just the same. here, tho, they are really talkin it thru. rock on.

  • Good morning music...wonderfull

  • very powerful in its own way.

  • am not a jazzy tho thats Beautiful Beautiful

  • Love this version. So often when this song is sung it just drags. This arrangement is great!

  • Duo fantastico...

    Grazie

  • the beginning of the song reminded me of one note samba haha

    amazing

  • The music is a spontaneous miracle X 2 WOW!

  • The name of the song is 'Here's That Rainy Day'

  • lanciao.

  • What is the name of this song? I've heard Jon Faddis play this in another video but I never got it's name.

  • I love it

  • I just wrote an essay listenin to this. Wow it gets your mind goin.

  • How nice it is to listen to............

    classy and smooth...........

All one can say is "Thankyou for being you"

  • love jazz, but its gotta be piano jazz, other types with all the trumpets and all that jazz(lol) are just to up beat and distracting...kinda too hectic for me. this is great though.

  • Just recently got all interested in this form of jazz - and these two gentlemen are just fantastic.

Am completely relaxed sitting here, is working wonders like nothing else.

  • Wonderfull!!!

  • Just listen

  • wow. i wanna play jazz too. can't right now. now in classical course for 8 years. anyone have tips on how to get started with jazz lessons? :)

  • Listen to and watch jazz. Try things and see what happens.

  • @Chalky2007 smoke a nice fattie and lay back and listen to this...its great ...and u would think a 15 year old woudnt listen to this:) lol my gradfater played wid ray charles :O he tuned his piano ad was an excellent piano playerbut the years hav robbed him of tht he is now in his 90's and going def..but wut realy amazes me is he has been blind since 9 :/

  • I'm going to learn jazz aswell, it's available in my music school ..

  • Well everything is based on classical(however loosely) so arguably you have a good start. But if you want a few things you will encounter alot try playing some classical pieces and throwing in syncopated eights instead of straight. Also I like using turns(hitting the written note then the scale note behind, back to the written, one up and back to the written very quickly) alot, though how often that will come up is hard to say.

  • ah! haha! i need actual demonstration to understand. but thanks anyway. i'll try to enroll on a jazz course. well, if i could find one. thanks :D

  • Nah, jazz doesn't work like that. It's quite different from classical.

  • @meixiu01 go to chicago and go to the south side and soak ur self in jazz there

  • find a jazz teacher...xD

  • I've had classical piano for over 10 years... i know how you feel. try to find a jazz piano around, or maybe look for online lessons. because jazz piano teachers are hard to find (the nearest one to me takes around 40mins to just get to his place) maybe online lessons is the only viable option. (feel free to msg me if you want to look for a good site)

  • @walamaking can u tell me of the sites u know of that can terach me how to play the piano? I am a more of all around piano music type person, ( i luv jazz too ) but iw anna be able to play all music on it, if maybe u know of sources that can direct me to piano lesoons or private tutorials listing (that type of stuff) in San Diego CA that would be a great move!:)

    thnx

  • @64miguel

You might want to look up wade beech... He's my instructor and he sometimes visits San Diego... Not for too long though. Sorry if I was no help :)

  • @meixiu01 listen and try to repeat, or get a good teacher. The teacher is the best option, of course, but if you're already studieing classical music, i should play jazz by copie the masters, like keith jarrett (somewhere over the rainbow is a good one to start). it learns you a lot about the chords... and later you can search for backing tracks and try to improvice... good luck ;'')

  • Fantastic! Thanks for sharing!

  • I've been wanting to get into the jazz culture more and learn the composition techniques, so thanks for posting. I'll have to check some more of their stuff out.

  • i love watching them =) they look so happy to be making music, it's wonderful =) It's almost like they're intereacting with the music... not sure if that made any sense =P That element of interaction and joy seem to be missing in the "pop music" industry =(

  • muy buen ritmo, alegre, con chispa, "perfecta armonia"

  • muy muy bueno, excelente talento para tocar...

  • wow, they did it EFFORTLESSLY !! cool !

  • What is the title of this?

  • here's that Rainy Day

  • This was Johnny Carson's favorite song!

  • what's the name of the song?

  • "Here's That Rainy Day."

  • brilliant !

  • I have watched John Lewis on video many times; I've noticed sometimes that small jerks of his body seem to indicate how the next phrase should be.

  • Lewis and Taylor demonstrate real class and elegance in this sophisticated music.

Makes one glad to have ears and a heart.

  • Mr. Lewis=Very Classy

  • Could you give me a list of ten or twenty of the best jazz songs you can sing along to.

  • Fabiandoulton. Here's a list:

    Misty Wave, Insensitive

My Romance, Someone to watch over me

You've changed, When Sunny gets blue

The end of a love affair ,Good Morning Heartache, Loverman, God Bless The Child, Fly me to the moon, Autumn Leaves,

My one and only love, Summertime

The way you look tonight, Here's that rainy day.

My Man, Thie must be love.

    What's new?, Lush Life

  • my favorite song ;-)

  • I've never heard John Lewis enunciate the melody line so clearly and distinctly as in this video session. Usually, I'd hear him with the MJQ as abackground pianist of no particular note.

  • Well I agree that John Lewis is certainly not the most pyrotechnic pianist out there, I do believe he was very hip in his own way? Do I approach jazz piano the same we he does? No, but I glean certain elements, such as note choice, relaxed feel, and understatement from his playing. Lewis simply heard music in a different way than many of us do.

  • what year is this--I know Mr. Lewis died in 2001

  • Such taste, such communication, such empathy...such elegance... dig how they compliment each other, play off each other... and the near-impressionist ending must have had Ravel sitting on a cloud applauding...

  • Does anyone have the backing track for Here's That Rainy Day? I play sax and want to play it out? Thanks

  • Its on the Jamie Aebersold "One Dozen Standards" play-a-along. I'm working it out, too.

  • Excuse me.

It is Ramsay Lewis I saw in Chicago in 1958.

    Extreme talent.

  • I never heard of John Lewis.

Billy - saw him in a club in Chicago in 1958.

    Pretty unknown then.

    But fab.

This is not a good version of my favorite song, that is for sure.

  • john lewis was the pianist of the modern jazz quaret with connie kay, percy heath, and milt jackson

  • Clearly Billy Taylor takes the show

  • Of course all has been civil and educated as correspond to people with good taste as far as we, all of us, share the same love for jazz music.

I understand what Lewis tried to do and certainly he did it well. But, as you know, it can happens not everybody share an approach. I recognize, say, Haendel as a great musician but I scarcely listen to his music. Same with Lewis. I like some extra doses of fireworks, chords changes and all that.

    My best

    Fern

  • diificult to find another more economic or boring pianist than John Lewis. Yes, everybody fall in his knees facing his sheer name, but just listen him....

  • I respect your right to your opinion, but I think you've been short-changed in the "taste" department.

  • Maybe so. But, at last, tastes are by definition a matter of taste... I consider Lewis poor or if you want, too tight in ideas, too lean and antyseptic. Perhaps the taste department stole my apreciation of him. I will check...

  • I commend you for your civility in your response to what was, I hope, an equally civil comment.

Lewis was an exemplar of what has been called by some "chamber jazz," and, as such, developed an understatement necessary to that idiom. His years with Milt Jackson in MJQ must have shown him early on that not everyone in such a group can do fireworks all the time. In this case, his own taste, I think, dictated that he be the ornamentalist over Taylor's amazing bedrock. Just my opinion.

  • This was a nice argument you guys had going. Its good to see there are still some classy people in the world of youtube.

  • One of Jimmy van Heusen's best compositions and played to perfection.

    Sincere thanks for this.
