@torker24 oh you're just sooo different and soooo intelligent. i can babble about bullshit and surt out nonsense and make it sound intelligent too as long as all my listeners are on drugs and dont know what the fuck reality is anyway. stop trying to be so different. different isnt art, its just different. and stupid most times
@notchjohnson1 Um... look, what David Lynch is saying in this video actually makes perfect sense, if you listen to what he's saying. He's explaining how all of us find different meanings in film, and in other forms of art and beyond, and that is the reality. So let me ask you: are you on drugs?
Eraserhead is either complete genius, or utter garbage, it can't be both. Either way, I found myself oddly entranced by the whole thing, and I loved it, despite it's... "oddities"
@MrTrty5 From what I've been reading lately about particle physics, Eraserhead could be both complete genius and utter garbage at the same time. I found it and watched it (in the throes of depression) last night for the first time and found it uplifting and inspirational.
It's not about the bible. He's saying that the characters and the story was abstract to him and that AFTER the fact, he found connections personally through the bible. That's why he spends the rest of the video explaining that the film is about whatever you personally derive from it. It's not because he's pretentious or religious, you guys just don't even pay attention to a video before giving it captions and cynical comments.
Roland Barthes wrote in the late sixties.... Death of the author.. this is about how the author can not hold on to absolute meaning when they are writing and the experience of interpretation is left up to the viewer and language and meaning are never really fixed and stable. This coincides with Lynch opening up with his admission of not understanding completely his choices and intuitively being drawn to his creative choices without a complete strategy that explains everything.
@xpez Lynch understands the power of crossing the boundaries of the "superego" and revealing fantasies of illicit desire. This is a voyeuristic strategy where you are being shown glimpses intimacy laced with bizarre perverse actions so you become a privileged spectator peering into something you know you shouldn't watch, yet by denying the ability to turn away the satisfying sensation of having power over your sense of shame is what keeps you engaged in the unfolding action in a Lynchian picture
Exactly what he says is so true. I watch his films and Twin Peaks etc and just respond to it all on a feeling/intuitive/abstract level. It's the same sort of pervasive inner meaning or comprehension you experience with dream logic - bypassing the act of literal, categorical 'defining' to access a different mode of assimilation or appreciation. Long live Transcendental Meditation, David. :)
He isn't a idiot. He is doing the hand thing to distract you so you won't pay attention to what he is saying because some artists do not like to reveal their secrets to the media.

Erazerhead, whilst an interesting film, is just a something for the pretentious viewer to uselessly drool over.

@LexL94 does the pretentious view drool over it? or do those who drool over it become pretentious?
