Man, when I heard the soundtrack, I always thought it was a shame that they left this song out of the game - such a beautiful track. I was also disappointed that they never used the alternate battle theme either...I really kinda liked it better than the battle theme they used.
hey, Peyser, mentioning songs that aren't/weren't there, I can't find "the runaway" in this chrono trigger OST playlist ? (you know, when chrono escapes after the trial, and at some other points in the game I reckon)
@Chucknorrisaurrus it's just in your head, mason (lol.) it's just how mysterious it is. also, studies show that if you see a photoshopped pic of you with some girl, you'll remember her even if you didn't meet her. the ominous touch makes it familiar, huh? then it's in your head! =P
Another relevant question is: what was the Singing Mountain itself supposed to be like, in terms of storyline and plot? I'm especially curious because the atmosphere this music sets seems radically different from the music that you actually hear while exploring the Age of Reptites.
The only clue we have is in a prototype Chrono Trigger cartridge someone acquired from...somewhere. Since it's an early alpha, most of the game isn't stringed together or complete but using hacks you can freely explore it. Singing Mountain is in the prehistoric era, a moutain cave up on the cliffs. It's just a generic unfinished looking standard cave area with no enemies though, although it does have the SM music playing.
@BusaLova They probably wouldn't have been able to do the multiple translations that tend to be needed for a text-heavy European release. Nowadays that's not an issue.
I dont get why everyone hates the first 40 seconds with the gate noises and that. Personally i like it because it builds up to the song. Just my opinion though.
I've heard it was the area you start at right after the Magus battle, which explains why you can hear the Gate before the actual song begins. Also, I can hear the wind sound as I listen to this; never noticed it before.
Singing Mountain was a place that was supposed to be used in the game in 65,000,000 B.C. area, but it was eventually left out of it. The song is between "Battle with Magus" and "Tyrano Castle" on the soundtrack, that gives pretty good idea of the location in the game.
@PeyserConley the song before 0:40 is the soundtrack before luca's story near the end in which you can either save her mom from getting her limbs crushed by her dad's invention by typing a code on the machine. (the red time portal)
i believe that the song after 0:40 however is a song from 1 of the many alternate endings. unsure though, havent played chrono trigger in ages lol.
Actually, if I recall some interview, Singing Mountain was supposed to be a optional dungeon relating to Ayla that you could enter when all the subquests open up after getting the winged Epoch.
Which was why Ayla didn't have a personal sidequest like the other characters, Singing Mountain was supposed to be hers.
@bob1986 Let's see. Frog's sidequest was the ruins north of Choras. Robo's sidequest was the Geno Dome. Magus had Ozzie's Fort. That leaves the Sun Stone quest, the Sunken Desert quest and the Rainbow Shell quest. I guess the last of these three goes to Marle, and the Sun Stone seems to be mainly Lucca's. But the Sunken Desert? Looks like another Robo sidequest, with Lucca getting a secondary role.
@PeyserConley so bacically after the battle with magus, the party were originally supposed to be warped to an ice mountain area though instead they just skipped that part and ayla found them and brought them to the ioka village

This would have been amazing on Death Peak. It's a damn shame they cut this.
FenrirsDarkSeal 7 months ago 5
I could see why it was cut though... Sounds like it'd belong better in Secret of Mana than Chrono Trigger.
ArtieStrongManMusic 7 months ago
This was unreleased on the SNES and PSX versions, but made it on one of the Vortex(s) (The extra dungeons),on a snowy mountain.
This soundrack is one of the best, why did they cut it off...?

This sounds like it could have easily been a Xenogears track. Did Mitsuda compose this one or Uematsu?

If there was ever a song that played when you had to climb up a snowy mountain during a blizzard, this would be it.

Almost sounds like a theme from Nausicaa for a second there..

@willisan Actually it very closely resembles the main theme for Castle in the Sky. Look it up, it's very uncanny.
