Well, here in Europe there's no such thing as soccer. And in the US 'football' is ambiguous term since they have 'American football' (and it's very popular there) which is in fact a variant of rugby. So to avoid confusion they tend to call football a soccer. My "except it's football, not soccer" is a bit of response to American trend to redefine terms for their own purpose ;)
