  • How come there's usually one or two comments on every video saying they're underrated? I agree, but can someone actually answer the question definitively?

  • yes yes yes yes yes yes

  • Dave, always has a smile on his face,,, hmmmmmm gorgeous, and i love this song, love the kinks

  • The more I listen to them, the more I fall in love.

  • Hell yeah, it's Sunday! Where's the roast beef, ma!

  • GREAT SONG HAPPY WORDS, POETIC RYTHEM,MAKES YOU SMILE!!!CAN,t HELP IT.

  • What was the object moving towards Dave Davies's face, at 2:44 ?

  • @phil1958uk Probably a TV camera getting into shot.

  • @phil1958uk

A Darlek.....loads around in those days!

  • @scobbiebhoy lol ya could just imagein the darlek humping him and shit

  • For God's sake-GIVE HIM A KNIGHTHOOD !

  • i like my football on a saturday

    roast beef on sunday, alright

  • i love the kinks, one of the best bands ever. and am i the only one that loves Daves outfit? its so fun looking hahaha

  • gentle londoners are back again!!! great!!!M

  • love the song and the video's nice too-though it is funny that lip/instrument-synching was not as perfected an art form as it would become later lol....this is especially true on that video of Dave singing Death of a Clown.

  • This is my favourite kinks song ever!!!

  • This is proper England.

  • anyone seen my copy of my autumn almanac? had my name written inside the front cover ...

  • Playful video and song and we and especially I need that on a regular basis. Yea to you dear poster of this!!

  • aww 1:24

  • Everything Andy Partridge has written can be traced back to this song.

  • What's up with Pete Quiafe's weird bass? It almost looks as if it really was made out of a piano.

  • Pete Quaife's bass has "this is a piano written on it". RIP.

  • Dave is adorable in that outfit lolol

  • The Guitar, That Ray Davis is using is a Vox Folk 12. It was in fact the same guitar as an EKO Ranger. Vox had whole guitars made by EKO, who also made them for Welson, ect It was just the name you paid for.

  • Such a beautiful, poetic song. I so love this track.

Each song I hear of theirs I can relate to.

Even my 11yr old knows the words to this :o)

    God save The Kinks!

  • @stephwhit81 I cant agree more with you! The Kinks Forever!

  • Autumn Almanac and Dead End Street are two of my all-time fave Kinks songs, pure genius!

  • @richwicz I agree,pure sentiment.And Afternoon Tea..

  • This song is pure genius, I'm American and this is the greatest British sounding pop song of all time in my opinion, it's got everything.

  • These guys were on drugs when they taped this for sure.

  • can someone explain to me why the part at 0:30 is only played once!?

  • lol ray davies looks a lot like perry farrell here.

  • Ray Davies was thinking of a certain type of British person for this song, but the character could just as easily be from South Philly or South Brooklyn as from South London. which makes it more universal :D

  • is he playing a keytar!? man thats cool haha

  • All grins! What is that bass Pete is (sort of) playing.

  • Do you think XTC knows this song....sounds like it could have come off of Skylarking, only it's 20 years before.

  • XTC loved those guys(obvious) also that Nat King(the greatest thing is to love and be loved back) Cole song sounds like THE MAN WHO SAILED AROUND HIS SOUL.

Was at a symphonic concert and Prokoviev piece was being played--sounded like XTC(Nonsuch or AppleVenus1)too bad the people who make "Pop" music don't have any real influences anymore--just boring hooks with power chords behind them that they do over and over and over again. Must be some comment on how dull the population is these days

  • The lyrics are just great another Ray masterpiece! I was out recently and seen an girl singing this on a karaoke night.... not an easy number to sing!

  • I love watching the people in the audience trying to dance to this wonderful, but undanceable, song.

  • the new wave and other movementes of the music, dont explain without the satirc and irreverent lirics of the kinks, the brothers Davies, Ray and Dave, give us a estrange lenguage but with deep contenet

  • If you could describe this song with one and ONLY ONE adjective, what would that adjective be? I'd say "timeless."

  • Almanyack lol

  • @jaht3z hahaha i caught that too and it made me laugh.

  • One of my favorite Ray Davies songs, that's for sure. I recorded a video of it if you want to watch a cover. Search "Ginger Binge - Autumn Almanac"

  • They wrote this song with my great uncle, he smacked me though :(

  • I first heard this song just before I went into the U S Army in 1967. I played the hell out of my 45 . I loved it then and I love it today, all these days later. This is my street and I'm never gonna leave it. Not if I live to be 99 years old.

  • Galericulus@ Of course, you are right. There ar more than 3 chords in Dandy and Dedicated follover of fashion. To me, " three chord songs" are only a symbol for simple songs, even they contain more chords. By the way " Arthur " is a great Longplay. I was always a big Kinks fan, since Waterloo Sunset.

  • Bonjour, vous aimez les sixties ? écoutez et podcastez mon émission "le super son des 60's" sur le site de plumfm. You like the 60's ? please, listen and podcast my broadcast "le super son des 60's", connect to "plumfm". Salut et faites gaffe au rock and roll.

  • I hate the phrase bittersweet, but this song is it, for me. Loaded with meaning. I absolutely love it

  • Dave Davies is the Kinks , Ray should have left and formed a nice quiet band singing songs like this. Dave could have continued with Your Really Got Me style.

  • After childish three chords simple songs like "Dedicated follover of Fashion" and "Dandy" suddenly Ray Davis disvcovered, that a guitar has more chords than C, F & G and wrote this masterpiece. In my opinion, together with "Waterloo Sunset", this artwork-song is better than anything else of flower power psychedelic sixties pop made in UK 1967. With the eception of "Sergeant Pepper".

  • @progmeck1 Try "Some Mother's Son" by the Kinks. It contains 14 different chords.

  • @progmeck1 For your information, "Dandy" contains between 7 and 8 chords, and "Dedicated Follower of Fashion" contains between 6 and 8 chords, depending on how it is played. Kinks' songs are not as simple as they sound. I suggest you investigate Dave Emlen's unofficial Kinks' website. This has chords, lyrics and other information for 300 of their songs - and there are still some glaring omissions!

  • @Galericulus The Kinks may be accused of many things, but musically 'simple' is not one of them. They were true skilled craftsmen on a par with the Beatles and the Beach Boys. Well said, then.

  • @saguaroboy You are a gentleman, Sir.

  • I love autumn so fucking much!

  • Got creepy caterpillars crawlin' outta me channel, guv!

  • Masters of modern popular song.

  • this is a piano! yesyesyes!

  • I'll be playing this song on Wednesday...my favorite season

  • Fantastic harmonies and chord changes.....no crappy r+b effects here, or vocorders....todays groups could learn from this gem- all the stuff was played live, and written by a human not an mp3

  • The Kinks were such an inventive and imaginative band. People bang on about The Beatles, but no one captures English particularities like Ray Davies and The Kinks. So articulate.

  • The Kinks were the best 60's band!! i was born in 1976, my Dad brain washed me into these :), i think this song was1967?

  • Perfect song. Perfect band. Perfect outfits.

  • this song was stuck in my head all day! great song tho

  • sounds like a pretty early attempt at backwards masking (running the tape in reverse) at the end of this song. I dig it man.

  • Autumn almaniac ?

  • @x9x8x7x61 there are loads of live performances on youtube. Type 'the kinks live' in the search box. There are tons of concerts and things

  • There are no caterpillars in Autumn. Really, The Kinks? Really?

  • @lacompte88 : it's autumn down here in New Zealand, and I've just picked half a dozen caterpillars off the geranium at my front door ....

  • This song puts me in such a freakin good mood

  • One of their greatests songs, but why don't they perform live, they are always playbacking.

  • YES!

  • This is such an underrated and a very happy tune. I really loves the Kinks and most of their music.

  • What a tune.. And for all thoes who dont like it.. FUCK OFF AND DONT LISTEN TO IT THEN!!

  • @RockNRollStaaa Nice one!!

  • One of my favourite Kinks songs, and I love this video - they all look so cute, especially Ray

  • RIP Pete :-(

  • HAHA..Dave Davis looks as bonkers as he is in this clip.... :)

  • Thankyou and God Bless you Pete.

  • Pete Quaife, thanks for helping make this wonderful tune enjoyable for decades more to come with your bass and vocals

  • Anyone that finds this song annoying should stick to Nirvana and other bands that require the purchasing of a packet of razor blades to accompany the music.

  • @Hexogenik Is that what we Nirvana fans do? The Kinks are probably my favorite band, but I grew up a Nirvana kid. And I happen to think that their music and overall attitudes have a lot in common. One band was more heavily involved with drugs than the other, that's all. It's not like Ray Davies never had a breakdown or a suicide attempt.

  • Yes coooooooooooooooooooool lyrics

  • Saw the Kinks about 20 years ago in ST. David's Hall Cardiff, the place rocked. Unforgettable

  • @boggym1999 "If someone doesn't like it though, it just means they don't like it. You can't say they don't have a soul."

Wonderfully stated. There;s no arguing taste.. attempting to do so only makes you a bigot.

  • This sweetheart of a song never gets old! :D

  • This song alone should qualify Ray Davies as poet laureate of the 20th century.

  • My dad brain washed me into the Kinks in the 80's, i was born in '76, they still sound good even now :)

  • Is it me, or are they incredibly adorable in this one? You know, more adorable than normal, if that's even possible.

  • Looking at Dave in there reminds me of Os Mutantes' Baptista brothers.

  • I never danced to this song, I played my picture sleeve single over and over again and I still does.

  • Love !!!!

  • This song really puts me in a good place!

  • i like my football on a saturday

    roast beef on sundays

    utter genius

  • still MY FAVORITE song of kink s ,full of joy

  • It's almost impossible to pick a favorite Kink's tune because they're all so superb, but right now, today, this one is my choice for the number one spot.

  • @drgrl

correct. but today i can't stop listening to "wonderboy"... la la la la la la la la la la la...

    love the kinks

  • @claygar310 definitely in the running for top spot..."life is what you conjure", Ray has that turn of phrase that just knocks you off your feet.

  • march lions roar respect to the king all apouse off with heads spring is here again my friends thks kurt i wanna live 2010 bless your youth hear today gone tomorrow into the void home cook meals our mother to make us feel good we love you fochem asortitah estis fochem fungghoul sumbitch

  • Great Song Makes me smile

  • I'm still "feeling" and processing the show a week later. Playing the Choral cd every morning on my drive in to work. Agree on this song's gemminess and on the set list he performed. GO hear this man perform if you are in earshot of him.

  • @AllenOption8

Last November in a very special San Francisco show, we got this one also in the first part of the show with Bill Shanley, then the band came out and rocked for a few songs, then after an intermission, it was the whole band and about 25 choir singers doing songs from VGPS and Arthur...quite simply the best show of the year

  • @kinksboss1 It's kind of a sing-song happy song. Sound like a good show withthe choir. I'm still thinking back to the Ray show.

  • Ray did this on Saturday night in Hartford and it was great to hear. I always liked it. The audience had to do a lot of sing songing along with him - it was his two person acoustic tour. They ended electric though - he was like a kid on stage doing his remaining songs. Cheers.

  • I'm not a teenage girl either, although I do understand things aren't easy at that age. Despite Ray suggesting this song is stupid, I reckon it's one of the best I've ever heard.

  • I'm a teenage girl and I love The Kinks. <3

  • Monday night @ Ray's concert, he stopped in the middle of this song and said " Is this about the stupidest song you've ever heard..." I love his humor..never takes himself too seriously.

  • THIS IS A PIANO.

  • I'm far from a teenage girl, but i too love the la la la la la la la la la la la.

    My poor rheumatic back!!!

    Great stuff.

  • @JohnyNomoney Funny! but you don't have to be a teenage girl to enjoy great music. You just have great taste!

  • Brilliant track - and great use of Mellotron brass and trombone throughout!

  • the audience are all dressed in suits, blimey times change

  • mods

  • beautiful song! thank you Ray :))

  • Love this song.

Ray Davies was indeed one of the greatest chroniclers in Rock history.

  • This song has a beauty that only Waterloo Sunset rivals.

  • this has always been one of my favourite pieces...it's utter perfection (as every Kinks song is) - the lyrics of this one particularly charm me.

  • This song, and Ray Davies performance of it, never fails to make me smile!

I don't really understand what is wrong with it.

  • I really believe they don't.

  • When I first heard this I fucking hated it. Couldn't get past the first 3 seconds. I think I was expecting something it couldn't provide, much like those confused bastards in this video trying to dance to it.

Since then, it has grown to be one of my all time faves.

I ussualy forget about it's existence in the fall, regretably, and end up remembering it in February, so I'm happy to have found it online, when the weather mirrors it's themes.

  • This is supposed to be a miss ?

So many good tunes in just one song...

Beatlesque ? It's rather Macca who tried to capture the quintessential englishness of Ray...

Anyway, I like them both... and Syd B. too !

  • @banjoshua ah i love syd barrett, so unappreciated, i love his almost childish way of writing

  • No way, pal. Turn wheel all the way -the other way.

  • Pero que polvazo auditivo!

    A borbotones por el tímpano!

  • i love this song

and ray in this video =)

  • They all look so happy....hahaha That makes me happy. Hell yes

  • @Jaketacular420

Yes, yes, yes! Me too. :)

  • if you don't like this song, you pretty much don't have a soul. Fact.

  • I like it. It does seem like kind of a warm-up for Waterloo Sunset, though.

  • not necessarily a bad thing though sir - GrantStatic

  • @StaticProductionsUK Define the term "soul".

  • @StaticProductionsUK

I full on agree with you

  • @StaticProductionsUK

at least a set of working ears

  • @StaticProductionsUK

Only started hearing this song in work on the cd we're forced to play all day every day and this puts my head away. Each to their own n all, you're obviously (or at least I hope) from a different generation from me and perhaps have some sort of appreciation for this but to say anyone who doesn't like this doesn't have a soul is a bit strong! I just hope they send us a new disc soon

  • No way!!!!

  • Is it the silly old-timey feeling? I wonder if this is similar to the dance hall music, (I think the US equivalent is tin-pan alley) Elvis Costello's dad did that old time music...historical...I am totally having a crush on Ray Davies...! Is he still in NOLA and not married??? hmmmm...hehehehehe

  • Maybe I gotcha. Someone of FB suggested Muswell Hillbillies, but I was thinking of Motorway Living "Aint it a thrill to be so free..ya", and listened and realized i don't like appalachian country by way of dance hall ray davies!!!

does he have a g/f? a womyn can dream can't she??? lolo

  • (I think the US equivalent is tin-pan alley)

You are correct. But from I understand, English music hall wasn't quite the same thing so its not the *exact* equivalent but close eneuogh I guess :)

  • @bethie777 You don't "love" the kinks if you find this song annoying.

  • @sirmelancholia It's very narrow minded of you to think that just because you love an artist, that immediately means you like everything they create.

There are songs that I don't particularly like for many of my favourite artists, and songs I really love, and songs I don't mind. It's better to have different tastes than be a sheep and just love everything they do simply because it's them, right?

  • @bethie777 Most any songwriter/band I listen to has my utmost respect for everything they put out. On the other side, I generally NEVER like just ONE SONG from any band. Still though, that's not only the case. Examples:

I like ONE Danzig song. "Blood And Tears"

I dislike a few songs off ONE Captain Beefheart album. "Troutmaskreplica".

  • @bethie777 Now that I've said that, I'm going to make an utter fool of myself and say that I've enver been much for The Kinks "Wonderboy".

  • Comment removed

  • @jack0532 I already explained to sirmelancholia; it's very narrowminded to think that just because you love an artist that you immediately love everything they create; think of your favourite band. I bet there is at least one of their songs that you don't particularly like? I think it's better to have different tastes and favourites and not just take everything they make and 'love' it simply because it's them.

  • @bethie777 You put that very well, Bethie. There are many bands I love, but I don't love everything they did. You can't put out great work all the time.

  • Ray Davis is A musical genius - Thank you !!!

  • I'm with carrieanne! A genius

  • i named my daughter Autumn this sept 22-2009, first day of fall with this song in mind, how cool is that, kinks are great, i cant name a songby them that doesnt have a downside, love my Autumn Joy she was 4lb 14oz

  • Thank God there were a few British bands in the '60s who actually sounded like they came from their country.

  • you sir have hive the nail on the head

  • When I listen to this song, I just want to cup my hands around the leaves and protect that little caterpillar!

I can't think of many artists who write lyrics that move me like this.

  • I like me football on a saturday!!

  • Most of the stuff from the 60's was pure class, unlike the rubbish today which won't be sung or remembered in 4 years time, let alone 40!

  • I love Autumn (despite my poor rheumatic back) and I love the Kinks!!

Is Ray Davies a genius ?

    YES YES YES

  • Lol, you can see so clearly that Davey Boy was only there "in spirit" on this vid! - but he looks so happy so whatever it is he was on it must have been good!

  • LOL

  • @Westx1874 : He was probably just happy, period. Unaided by chemical crutches. An almost unbelievable mythological state to be in nowadays, I suppose.

  • @Krzyszczynski Mythological! Haha!

  • should be played all week on radio!!! I love autumn

  • What drug is Davey on in this one?
