I think they use variable voltage for each car like they with trains. And the lane changes are automatic, there are track sensors that will change the faster car to the quicker line.
Yes it is digital, there is a decoding chip in each car that takes throttle and lane change info. Each car is assigned an ID and any slot car can be chipped so it will work on this track.
