You need to watch out for pothole's with any car in nyc wheel's bend easy because they are light weight. And mpg in nyc will always be less then what they say with traffic and the lights.
living on long islands a bitch to drive in, im sure ud know lol. we use an 03 odyssey with a shitton of miles on it for the city and belt parkway because it never bends a rim. good car, but the freakin potholes are endless.
Thanks for the video. I'm looking at the Malibu. I thought those rims were actually alloy's I didn't realize it was a 5 spoke steel wheel with a cover on it.
steel wheels are weaker than alluminum alloys, so they bend more easily. try getting some 16" alloy wheels on tirerack or something. they aren't too expensive depending on the brand, or even 16 steel wheels with covers. not sure if they will fit your brakes though. wheels america and other companies can fix alloys if they do bend for ~$120.
@camaroman101 living in nyc i will never have alloys on my cars, they break too easily and they are too expensive. steelies can bend as you can see, but they usually do not go flat and they cost a fraction of the cost of alloys. my car is just a basic car to get me places, i spend my money on my house. there is a place called the tire rack that sells steel wheel and tire packages for the winter as ppl here who have alloys take them off and ride steelies through the winter as our winters are bad
Same thing happened to me, I have a 2009 saturn aura XE, they come standard with the 225, 50 or 55 can't remember, 17's... I hit a huge dip in the road and the wheel bent and blew out the tire...
Hope you know there's a tool to repair the bead seat of the tire, but of course you need the tire off to do so.
Hey crazeenydriver: I recently rented a 2010 Chevy Malibu on a recent trip to Florida, and I must say that I was not impressed. It is a typical piece of Government Motors junk.

Those rims would be bent to hell where I live! It's amazing how easy you were able to hammer that back in shape. I agree about the rear headrests too, what were they thinking? Problems aside, it's a nice looking car.
I couldn't agree more. We have nasty roads in Colorado too, and broken wheels are a common sight here in the winter. Its also almost always the guys who have huge wheels with tiny, low profile rubber band tires. People wonder why I always opt for 70 or 75 series tires with steel wheels... because they're strong! (and like you said, cheap to replace!)
I appreciate the advise. I bought a new Chevy Impala that also offered a similar 17" rim. I found that I was able to order the car with a 16" rim and a higher profile tire. I purchased the car new with the 16" rims. After seeing this video, I'm glad that I did. I didn't like the way the low profile tire looked, and was afraid of bending the rims. I had no idea that they bent this easily. In Minnesota we have plently of frost heaves and potholes at the end of winter.
Hey you should google "2009 Malibu vs 1959 Malibu", really cool crash test starring your new car that shows how far along safety has come in the past 50 years.
Thanks for sharing. I want this car or the Saturn Aura and I would of never even bothered to look at the tires in that way. Thanks CrazyNYDriver!

You show the outer edge of the rim being bent. Is it not equally likely the inner part of the rim may be damaged and harder to see?

@tjstreeter do NOT get the alloys, they are worse than the steelies, unless you live in FL or CA where potholes are not an issue
