It's fascinating to read these comments here. Yes, this new production is brilliant. But go to any of the newer productions of Wagner and read the idiotic statements there over new productions. It boggles the mind that there are so many idiot "wagnerites".....
To CarlosFinch: There is a DVD. Just this morning we had a big time seeing it at the university (I teach music for Art sutdents). We laughed with this fantastic staging and we were astonished for the beauty of the music.
I make a point of hating opera and modern dance as a drain on funds.
This, however, is cracking. I agree that the word relevance is overused, try "appealing". You couldn't drag me to see a staging that Lazlo approves of, nor anyone under 40.
The dance isn't my bag but it is superb. The staging is my thing & let me tell you it's a joy.
If we keep throw more of my tax money at this kind of thing I'll not be happy but I won't so angry.
Never too late to learn to read. I deplore those clamouring for 'Authenticity' as much as I do those squeaking for 'Relevance'. Regardless, I believe that opera has always embraced technology. What I really don't believe is that an opera professional can be as homophobic as you pretend to be, duchess.
Dude, seriously. Have you EVER looked at a painting from the baroque era? It's full of guys' hairy little members. You know, when Michelangelo made his statue of David naked, I didn't hear you complain about that, but that's even more absurd. Who the hell goes into battle without any clothes? Also not creative or relevant - but folks like it. I don't see how your being offended by something most of the original audiences would have had hanging in their living rooms advances the ball any.

Any of your "points"??? What "Points" are these? You didn't make any "points" to address.
You did, however, make some childish observations about Baroque art but that was far too stupid to respond to. Had you actually had a "point," I would have gladly addressed it.
Somehow you fail to detect a difference between the PORTRAYAL of nudity in a scultpure or painting, and actual NUDITY ITSELF. D'uh... it's da same ting, right, dude? D'uhhh... y eah!! Whoa! Dude!
Lazlo: Cut your comments full of flawed logic and ad hominem attacks, continue to watch barely-attended operas stuffed under powdered wigs, while everyone else watches productions like these which allow opera to thrive through being... (gasp) ENTERTAINING.
Opera as entertainment... what a concept, right????
I htink that the staging is amazing. This is a barroque opera, then, if we try to put it on stage as if we were in the barroque period, we could'nt take advantage of the technology we have nowdays. Perfect singing and perfect dancing, I love this opera.
The creativity and free imagination of the scenography is matched by the fantastic rendition of the musical score by both singers and orchestra. When I see and hear productions such as this, my faith in opera as an artistic medium relevant for todays audiences is renewed. Thanks for posting!
Why does art need to relevant? I'll never understand this as long as I live. You may see it as imaginative, but I see it as an apology for performing a 300 year old opera - as if it needed it, which it doesn't. Art speaks for itself, no matter how old or new it is. And if it's so important to be relevant to today, why perform the music on instruments of the period in which it was written? This is silly, plain and simple...a lot sillier than performers in period costume would have been.
What I don't understand are your comments about relevance. When I say relevant, I mean emotionally engaging. This goes for modern and period productions. As for art speaking for itself, I disagree. The audience, reader or listener makes it speak, we animate it through the interplay of our emotions. It engages us, and becomes relevant.
I agree with you. "Relevance" became the operative word for all entertainment in the 1960's... the great beginning of political correctness... movies that made, "statements," TV shows, whatever, everything had to be RELEVANT.
Not enough to be entertaining, or beautiful, had to be RELEVANT. And on it goes...

Taste is to be discussed, since it developes. This choreography is totally tasteless! The music and the intepretation are very good. I wonder what the performers think about it...humm

Its a shame they had to go and ruin it with this idiotic staging and choreography. I want to watch it, but it's just got too much tasteless stuff going on. What a turn-off.
Rameau's music is great, though. Good thing he didn't live to see this.
This is a great performance by Les Artes Florissants and all of participaters, I have this DVD at home and the whole opera takes about 3 hours and I couldn´t stop watching the video until the end!!! It is glamorous and deliricious and you´re never bored. Rameau is a musical miracle!
I know that isn't the best place to write a post like this, but I need to know what is that all about. I need a short summary of this opera cause I don't know French. So if You would be so kind... Thanks.
A comedie lyrique like Platee (but lower) a parody of chevalry story (paladin like Galahaad or Orlando) after a fable by La Fontaine (1760, Rameau was 77 year old), a curious Middle-Ages with burlesque, exotism and fantastic : in original libretto, the caracters are sheperds pilgrims, troubadours, magicians and chineses !
it's just Rameau...done by William Christie, nothing holy. I wouldn't pay too much attention to the camp let alone it's significance. Still, purtty music.
Excelente coreografia, y cantantes geniales...una de las mejores cosas que he visto en DVD. Buen ejemplo de cuando lo moderno aporta con creces a la opera.

Modernist productions usually seem stripped-down and bare (i.e, cheap), but this is so full of imaginative details that I'm completely won over.
