I respect him that he went over there. But he got out of serving in the war (think he was 4F, whatever that means. I would have preferred to hear what Lee Marvin would have felt, since he was a Marine and had got wounded in World War II. According to John Boorman, Marvin might not have had the same feelings that Mitchum had.
4F meant that he had submitted to a military examination and was found unfit for service.

Thankyou for your response. I figured that what it was to be 4F. I'm just curious what physical defect he had. He did mention something once about why he did not go, some injury he suffered I believe. It is just strange to me, that he could not have served in some capacity. I perhaps shouldn't be critical, as I have never had to even register for the draft. I guess I just would not have been so bold as Mitchum about other men fighting if I had not had to serve in a military capacity.

I don't know the context of this particular clip, it's from the Extra Features of a disc called Berkley in th Sixties. Bob apparently had some authority with Vietnam because he'd been there, but I don't know in what capacity.

Mitchum at least had some medical excuse about his hearing not being up to scratch, but Captain America Himself Marion Morrison never so much as wielded a handbag in anger in defense of his country.
Compare these snakes in the grass to the likes of the real King cobra and King of Hollywood Clark Gable who volunteered to go on daring bombing missions against the Nazis, and risked his life for his country in the process.

I respect him that he went over there. But he got out of serving in the war (think he was 4F, whatever that means. I would have preferred to hear what Lee Marvin would have felt, since he was a Marine and had got wounded in World War II. According to John Boorman, Marvin might not have had the same feelings that Mitchum had.

4F meant that he had submitted to a military examination and was found unfit for service.

"Registrant not acceptable for military service. Thankyou for your response. I figured that what it was to be 4F. I'm just curious what physical defect he had. He did mention something once about why he did not go, some injury he suffered I believe. It is just strange to me, that he could not have served in some capacity. I perhaps shouldn't be critical, as I have never had to even register for the draft. I guess I just would not have been so bold as Mitchum about other men fighting if I had not had to serve in a military capacity.

John Wayne didn't serve in the war. Yeah. THAT John Wayne. The star of The Longest Day and The Green Berets. Wayne got out of serving his country by using the 'parental hardship' clause.
A father could avoid the service by saying that him children couldn't get by without him if he were killed in battle. Many fathers joined up to fight but a few like Wayne used the 'parental hardship' clause to get out of fighting.
Wayne had the gall to turn around and call Viet Nam draft dodgers cowards.

I can't tell you how happy it made me to hear the great Robert Mitchum talk like that. He's one of my acting heroes. I'm a young UK guy totally out-of-sync with the vast majority of my pacifist, tree-hugging, arrogant, limp-wristed English compatriots. Most our real men have been disenfranchised, and old-style masculinity supressed. It takes something like a Steve McQueen or Robert Mitchum film to re-assure me that the great unapologetic, red-blooded male was ever tolerated in society.

Not necessarily. Mitchum liked to play the press like a banjo and just get them out of his hair. And he was far more complex and thoughtful than he reveals in a little sound bite like this. It may reveal his real thoughts at the time, at least in a knee-jerk way, but I wish he were still around to be interviewed about the interview.

I was 18 in 1966. We kids thought little about 'Nam then. This is pre Tet offensive, 1968. The draft got ugly - my guy's birthday #27; girlfriend's guy,#327. Life ain't fair. I don't know the context of this particular clip, it's from the Extra Features of a disc called Berkley in th Sixties. Bob apparently had some authority with Vietnam because he'd been there, but I don't know in what capacity.
