  • thats exactly it, that is the alternative he refers to

  • @steve12168 Ok, I see what you mean. But I still think he's wrong. Of course they could have pulled out, without pushing the button.

  • Not cool

  • @RichardElden I know, demonized by the left just as they do now

  • then dont fight it.

  • this is the same guy who fell asleep when he watched back to the future in theatres... f*ck robert mitchum

  • Why didn't he just kept his mouth shut until the next movie. This more or less destroyed my picture of him.

  • @MrRazorblade999 what Mitchum is actually saying if you listen, is that in his opinion you can't pull out of the war because they alternative is to terrible.

First and foremost Mitchum was a Humanist !

  • @steve12168 Tell me, what alternative is so terrible compared to "push the button" and "kill them all"?

  • Instead they stayed in, killed one Million of them and then pulled out.

Or in other words, they did everything wrong.

  • Wow, love Robetrs Mitchum's acting but what an idiot.

  • There's a hell of a lot of sarcasm here. The "nuke 'em" bit especially was given with a tone of facetiousness. This is typical Robert Mitchum who liked to piss-off people who take themselves seriously. It worked. I say the same sort of absurd shit all the time, and boy people get riled-up. You may say I'm a troll; I'd say you're gullible and lacking a sense of humor.

  • Robert Mitchum, a veteran of a Southern chain gang, turned down the role of Jackson, in The Defiant Ones, because blacks and whites would never be chained together in the segregated South. The story was corrupted into the claim, repeated by Curtis and others, that Mitchum refused to work with a black man

  • What was he smoking?

  • haha. i think he should stick to acting. i don't think he even knows where in the world Vietnam is. He probably thinks it's some rebellious native american group running around causing chaos in the back streets of his neighborhood.

  • Mitchum was fucked in the head.

Remember the movie The Defiant Ones"...

with Sidney Poitier and Tony Curtis?

Mitchum was offered the role before Curtis.

    Mitchum turned it down...

because he didn't want to work with a black guy.

    Mitchum had squirrels juggling knives...

    in his brain.

  • @krugin72 we are ALREADY scared from you americans, don't worry.

  • So weird that he smoked copious amounts of pot and had political views like this. I guess a lot of people supported the war until the Pentagon Papers came out and we figured out Johnson was full of shit.

  • "If they won't be be peaceful them kill 'em."

The level of hypocrisy in this statement is staggering.

  • @kassandrasduplex Actually Mitchum was a pretty good actor but, yes, he also was a bit of a jerk. But since when did Hollywood A-List actors need a high IQ to put on make-up and stand in front of a camera? And in his case that applies to B-List actors also.

  • He was a tough guy. No sense fuckin' around. Nothing gets done that way. People let things go to hell then curse the heat.

  • This is the same man who refused to work on the Defiant Ones with Sidney Poitier because he didn't want to work with a black man.

  • I hope he later regretted this dim bulb response but he's still one of greatest actors of his generation.

  • Not a very smart guy, was he? Oh well, I still like him as an actor.

  • It's sad what McCarthyism did to people. All types of people, and you can still see it today. The only two solutions are war and genocide... sad.

  • Well, who ever said that actors had to be smart? "If they won't be peaceful, kill them." Funny but I don't remember a single instance of the North Vietnamese attacking a single city, town or village anywhere in the United States. But I do remember the Mi Lai massacre and that we dropped over a million tons of bombs on the Vietnamese. So who exactly was it that refused to be peaceful, was it us or them?

  • He's absolutely right.

If a nation can't learn to live in peace it's the responsibility of the rest to kill them.

    Push the button!

Wipe the United States of the face of the Earth. If they can't stop starting wars, get rid of them.

    This man speaks the truth!

  • If you take everything Mitchum says seriously, you'll think he's mental. He was a wind-up merchant and always said the most outrageous things to push people's buttons, even after his death, he's still doing it on YouTube.

  • He's gotta just be rabble-rousing for the fun of it. Either that or my personal respect for him just dropped several notches.

  • He's just winding everybody up, at heart he was a peace loving guy who dug all races and cultures. He probably had a few and was just pushing the boundaries which was his form.

  • typical Mitchum.

he was and remains a brilliant man and actor and anyone who disagrees clearly knows nothing about him. RIP

  • Great actor,lousy politician

Lousy on both counts, this guys performances, his voice...always put me to sleep.Never could understand the appeal of this hack.

  • I think Mitchum was a great actor and he seemed like a pretty decent guy, someone you'd want to be friends with, but this is ridiculous. Push the button and kill them all? Yeah, great idea...

  • @Aidooosh It is if you're one of the folks pushin' the button....

  • Well...time has shown this guy to have been a pot smoking idiot!

"Push the button. Kill them all."

What a cretin. ANyone who admires this guy is a monster.

  • Great actor, lousy politician

  • compared to who, oliver stone, who said how much he loves castro?

  • @luckywood

    but happy dope smoker...

  • unlike martin sheen, who played a great leader

  • I find this quite surprising. "push the button and kill them all?" Sheesh. I'm surprised he'd say that even if he THOUGHT it....

  • I think he liked to create headlines.

  • Such language from a peanut.

  • He was earning his Hollywood creds (Hollywood has NEVER been liberal). As for pot smoking signalling he was an intellectual or not a "conservative" I lived in the Hollywood Hills for years and could introduce you to many Reagan Republicans who used pot alcohol tobacco, marijuanna and more. Check out what Irving Thalberg and Louis B. did to Upton Sinclair in 1934 if you want the truth about Hollywood. Mitchum was obviously WRONG in this case.

  • I think Mitchum moved right during the 1960s, like Frank Sinatra and Charlton Heston. I know he campaigned for George Bush Snr in 1992.

  • I can't believe he said that.

I'm currently 100 pages or so into Lee Server's biography of him and really impressed by the guy, but I'm tempted to chuck it in the bin after hearing him spout this uncharacteristic hatred.

His eyes even flared up with anger.

God love Vietnam and her people, they are thriving today despite the attempted genocide and extinction of it's people by America.

That was a bigger crime than the holocaust - and there were no Nazis involved.

  • ...and what did the communists do when we left?

  • ...correction - when you were 'DEFEATED' RattlerBK - and sent running out of there like rats with your asses on fire.

The communists celebrated your international shaming and humiliation, and rightly so.

    Suck on that.

  • "There just isn`t any pleasing some people. The trick is to stop trying. " Quote by Robert Mitchum

  • All Mitchum's quotes were hilarious!

  • This was the dumbest statement I have every heard. Well we did pull out and the world did not end. And he wanted to push the button??? And what would we have done when China and Russia push their buttons and bombarded US with nukes??? Oh yeah, get tough and kill everyone who doesn't look or act like us. Real smart.

  • A 41 second encapsulation of "conservatism".

    (See Hayek's "Why I'm Not a Conservative"):

  • just kill 'em. damned right!

  • LOVE THAT BOB!

  • Bravo Bob!

  • 4120Wade said it all.

  • kill em all! than they'll have to love us! The great U.S. of A. Buy cornflakes or DIE!!!!! That should be the tagline of our entire nation!

  • It is too bad hollywood has turned into panty waist leftist now. We could use a few more Robert Mitchum's and John Wayne's today.

  • Mitchum and Wayne (especially) were cowards who dodged the draft.

Mitchum at least had some medical excuse about his hearing not being up to scratch, but Captain America Himself Marion Morrison never so much as wielded a handbag in anger in defense of his country.

Compare these snakes in the grass to the likes of the real King cobra and King of Hollywood Clark Gable who volunteered to go on daring bombing missions against the Nazis, and risked his life for his country in the process.

  • Robert Mitchum is awesome. So hard core as well.

  • The Mitchum Solution! Yeah!

  • "If they wont be peaceful, KILL'EM"

  • I love Robert Mitchum!

  • I looked a little deeper and guess what ?Robert Mitchum served in the army in WWII. He received his honorable discharge in October 11, 1945.

  • I respect him that he went over there. But he got out of serving in the war (think he was 4F, whatever that means. I would have preferred to hear what Lee Marvin would have felt, since he was a Marine and had got wounded in World War II. According to John Boorman, Marvin might not have had the same feelings that Mitchum had.

  • 4F meant that he had submitted to a military examination and was found unfit for service.

    4F:

"Registrant not acceptable for military service. To be eligible for Class 4-F, a registrant must have been found not qualified for service in the Armed Forces by a Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) under the established physical, mental, or moral standards. The standards of physical fitness that would be used in a future draft would come from AR 40-501."

  • Thankyou for your response. I figured that what it was to be 4F. I'm just curious what physical defect he had. He did mention something once about why he did not go, some injury he suffered I believe. It is just strange to me, that he could not have served in some capacity. I perhaps shouldn't be critical, as I have never had to even register for the draft. I guess I just would not have been so bold as Mitchum about other men fighting if I had not had to serve in a military capacity.

  • John Wayne didn't serve in the war. Yeah. THAT John Wayne. The star of The Longest Day and The Green Berets. Wayne got out of serving his country by using the 'parental hardship' clause.

A father could avoid the service by saying that him children couldn't get by without him if he were killed in battle. Many fathers joined up to fight but a few like Wayne used the 'parental hardship' clause to get out of fighting.

Wayne had the gall to turn around and call Viet Nam draft dodgers cowards.

  • John Boorman relates how Marvin felt about Viet Nam in a documentary that's posted on Youtube.

Boorman tells of Marvin's response to a military general's question "What do you think of the Viet Nam war ?" near the end of Part 2 . Do a search for " Boorman documentary on Lee Marvin".

  • Mitchum famously hated Marvin.

  • uh uh yeah...

    what was he smoking exactly??

  • They should have vapourized the entire country.

  • A great actor but obviously doesnt know jack`s shit what he`s talking about.

  • he would be amerika's best general ever!

  • Never take Mitchum's comments from this era as his real sentiments. Might be what he really thought. Then again, maybe not.

  • i love his films! i thought he would be pacifist however. this is awesome also.

  • If you'd spelled correctly and been polite I'd leave 'em up. Try again and be smart this time. I'll leave them up. Really.

  • My spelling was perfect!

You've got me on the impoliteness part....

  • I'm sorry If I removed something good. It seemed like you and that other guy were having an ugly argument, a pissing contest. I cleared him away too. You can see I've left other mean and stupid comments here, so You're welcome to try again.

  • Way to go...deleting all my comments.

I guess Liberals only care about freedom of speech when it's what they want to hear.

  • None of you "don't pull out" types know what the fuck you're talking about. I was in an infantry unit in I Corps for a year, '68-'69. I did the fighting you motormouthed ignorant imbeciles claim you would have done. The war was total bullshit, utterly pointless. We killed 2 million Vietnamese for no reason......so bloodsucking industrialists and politicians back in the States could get votes and make millions. And Mitchum, a great actor, had his head totally up his ass on this issue.

  • 4120Wade couldn't have said it better myself. Iraq = Vietnam (part 2). Mad dog war criminal Bush should have invaded Saudi Arabia if he intended invading any country. That's where the terrorists came from. Know why he didn't ---Daddy,Chainey & his war mates have big investments in oil there.

  • Huah!

  • i alwayz pull out !

  • "Kill them All" ---the answer to everything & then when they start killing us we ask why?

  • And just how would they manage that if the phrase was actually followed through and they were all dead?

  • I can't tell you how happy it made me to hear the great Robert Mitchum talk like that. He's one of my acting heroes. I'm a young UK guy totally out-of-sync with the vast majority of my pacifist, tree-hugging, arrogant, limp-wristed English compatriots. Most our real men have been disenfranchised, and old-style masculinity supressed. It takes something like a Steve McQueen or Robert Mitchum film to re-assure me that the great unapologetic, red-blooded male was ever tolerated in society.

  • The fact that Robert Mitchum lives up to what I hoped he would be (sharing my own views in the process) is very pleasing indeed.

  • the fact that Mitchum couldn't stand mcqueen doesn't bother you then?

  • Not in the slightest.

  • McQueen was only a wife-beating midget. Mitch was the real King of Cool.

  • Well my friend you better get out of America because it's no longer the land of the Brave. It now home of the "limp-wrist" pacifist liberals that when hit...run!

  • Too true. Before you know it, America will be as mediocre as Belgium and England. Dear, dear God....

  • America is perhaps the most mediocre country in the world at the moment you just dont have the intelligence to know it

  • Like the country in which you reside has any knowledge. Pompous basterd.

  • Fuck - that heap of shit you call an island you live on has been third world since WW2 ended. If America is " mediocre " right now maybe it is because you sap nations have been sucking us dry for the last century. Save your arrogant Brit comments for the lads at the pub you get pissed at.

  • hey gadsgesticulate... let me guess... you're just another American wannabe in denial... Interesting how virtually everyone in the world wants to come to America or be an American... Never have I ever heard anyone ever say "I want to be a Russian", or "I want to be a German" or "I want to be a Britain".... but "I want to come to America or be an American" is heard galore worldwide. America - greatest nation in the world - Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow, Forever!

  • True tough guy. That is what we need to do in Iraq. Go in and kill em all and let God sort them out. That is how ALL wars should be handled. Kill em' all and let sort them all.

  • @GCL777 Perfect solution! Let's kill millions of innocents who had nothing to do with 9/11 and let a mythological being sort it out! Except when it happens to us; then it's apparently terrorism.

  • A shame that men like him in Hollywood are few and far between nowadays, and those that are are villified in an insane hatred that rivals the most vicious of the worlds tyrants.

  • Brando once summed it up vis stardom. He basically stated that given his position in cinema, he would be asked of his opinion on foriegn policy and what was frightening, he would answer the question.

  • People like Rougy11 would sell their own grandmother out to avoid a fight.....nothing is worth fighting for for these type....besides all people are basically "peaceful" and really want just to get along with us, right? Not to mention the freedom to be a ignorant, non-thinking moron is owed to rougy11.....sure, just don't ask him to stand up for that "right" which cost some poor guy's blood to secure.

  • pretty cool comments from a total pothead! mitchum walked around hollywood baked haha

  • Partisanship is destroying your country

  • Robert Mitchum unlike the rest of liberal anti-American Commiewood is a true American patriot. You know I love how libs don't mind when they or people who agree with them speak their mind but if you disagree with them you are supposed to keep your mouth shut. This is the USA everyone not just libs have the right to speak out so deal with it we are here to stay!

  • tell it robert!! curtis lemay style..kill the enemy till they give up!

  • Mitchum was RIGHT.

BTW, he obviously had a great sense of humor.

When Larry King once interviewed him, he frustrated the hell out of King by just giving one word answers (e.g., "Yes", "No").

    What a character!

  • i love mitchum ---as an actor--- but let's face it: he wasn't exactly a savant and who gives a shit now what he thought --or didn't think --about vietnam or anything else?

(basically i think he's just playing contrarian in this clip - going against the popular tide)

  • Not a savant? You mean, like you? You'd shriek if susan sarandon or tim robbins was dismissed as easily, he served his country, which more than your pink gestapo in hollywood.

  • yeah i mean like me and anyone else who lived through the era and saw how the lies and warcrimes played themselves out back then. We served our country. The leaders & liars betrayed it.

[in fact a lot like today ain't it?]

and by the way chump i don't even know who susan saradon or tim robbins are and couldn't care less as I don't consume the hollywood product any more than i consume the washington or wall street product. sorry 'bout that.

  • Yeah, I know Vietnam Vets, I'm the son of one, CHUMP! The warcrimes? More than the millions butchered by the north vietnamese...the only distinction you recieve by having lived through that era was that of participating, stateside, in the most shameful display of domestic treason imaginable, you served nothing by being part of that rabble, and now, grayed and as stupid as you were then, you see history turning against and your 'noble cause' defamed. Who's the chump?

  • Yeah, I feel the same. We did pull out, of course, and we shouldn't have gone in, of course...

  • A part of me wishes I hadnt ever watched this clip, I had so much respect and admiration for Robert.. I dont know what to think right now.

  • He was a little sauced but still in possession of his senses. Mitchum was stating the obvious for any honorable person--too many people are going to be slaughtered if we pull out. We did 'pull out' and the Democrat Congress has the blood on its collective hands. Flame away, children.

  • I'm sorry I watched this clip. Mitchum fan. He spoke with the belligerent surety of a drunk, and I've been around too many of those. Besides, he never saw combat. Funny, we got out anyway. Only took 15+ years.

  • Pussies like yourself can't stand the unambigious speech of a man with spine, it reflects poorly on yourselves, weak, indecisive, and god for nothing. You snarl with jealousy when confronted with someone in control of his mind and punch-blunt with his opinion, he makes you look ugly.

  • my german isn't very good, but here's what I gleaned "you're an hysterical child" I "hide behind my psuedonym"...Is that right, did I get the gist?

  • tell it like it is MR Mitchum. i would have bombed the shit outta them gook bastards for what they did to rambo-- man psychologically they messed that guy up,, thats why he went on the rampage and killed all them cops and busted up bryan dennehy.. goddaMN gooks. there ungratefull, we saved their asses in ww2 and this is how they thank us?..giant goddamn robots?.. i say bomb em and be done with it.

  • Not necessarily. Mitchum liked to play the press like a banjo and just get them out of his hair. And he was far more complex and thoughtful than he reveals in a little sound bite like this. It may reveal his real thoughts at the time, at least in a knee-jerk way, but I wish he were still around to be interviewed about the interview.

  • I doubt mitchum would roll over in his grave if he knew that.

  • Shows why this guy was such a natural for the Max Cady and Reverend Harry Powell roles....

  • the interview was done in 1966 i do not think he was refering to the war in Iraq i think he was refering to vietnam

  • DUH

  • Like the soldiers: which are they?

Pink bastards like yourself have no spine, nor sense of justice. A mealy-mouthed lot of worthless tounge-waggers.

  • Spine? That's what you call murdering 1,000,000 civilians in Iraq?

Justice? That's what you call attacking a country that had not attacked us?

You're a pussy and an idiot and that's all you'll ever be.

  • Hahahahahahahaha! A MILLION? Holy shit! We didn't kill a miilion people, sweetheart, you are a raving lunatic!

and yes, it was justice to attack Iraq, the 1st gulf war never ended, we were in a cease fire which Hussein violated by firing on our jets and bases, we were legally justified to wipe them off the map just for that. Pussy? Hardly. I've faced death more times than you, my silly friend.

  • I couldn't have written a better, more-perfect liberal response than that treasonous diatribe. Thank you.

  • Treasonous? That's funny about you cons. Anybody who disagrees with you is a traitor. Just like the Nazis and the Fascists. You people are afraid to think for yourselves, and you always have been. You think that America belongs to you and you alone. 3 million Vietnamese were murdered by the USA. Mitchum was too boneheaded to see that. 1 million Iraqi's are dead because of the USA. You, too, are too short-sighted to see. But that makes you and American and me a traitor.

  • This is a perfect example of why actors should stick to wjat they do acting, rather than politics. I admire Mitchums films, but what he is saying is pathetic and ignorant.

  • what is ignorant is pink wastes of time like yourself thinking they can fight wars better than generals, mitchum was right, we should have stayed and bombed the fuck out of the north.

  • That's my dad's philosophy, and I don't agree with it one bit. However, Mitchum is still awesome, even if I don't agree with his politics!

  • Kill em, push the button! This is stupidity, lunacy and hypocrisy, small-minded and altogether ludicrous. Let's leave it to Mitch and his ilk; lights, camera, action -- nuke the baby, burn the child, shred the mother and cap the father -- gung ho! Facile, inhumane, nonsensical cameo, glib and putridly portrayed shame of a talent.

  • RIGHT ON Robert. It's a shame we don't have men like that these days. One of the PRIMARY reasons this country is going to hell in a handbasket. We don't have real men like Goldwater and Reagan anymore, instead we have abject bafoonery for men in higher office.

  • That is "abject bafoonery for men in higher office"? What does that mean?

  • thats the truth,we should have took over the world after ww2,Put Russia and China in their place. Now we are going to have more blood shed because we didn't .Hindsight is 20/20.

  • Take over the world? So we should have proved that we're better (I'll be kind with the words) fascists and outright bastards than the others? Because we're just the toughest little postage stamp in the Universe? With nothing else around?

It is comments like yours that make me and many others mourn for the future of this country, let alone for the world. I hope you come back and read and edit what you wrote with that post.

  • Then weep and wourn, meet me in the street or shut the hell up. Your sanctimony does no one good, nor does it aid the national discourse, douchebag.

  • I was 18 in 1966. We kids thought little about 'Nam then. This is pre Tet offensive, 1968. The draft got ugly - my guy's birthday #27; girlfriend's guy,#327. Life ain't fair. I bet all those John Wayne types were pro-war. Vietnam a fiasco. Old farts send young boys-not their own-to slaughter & be maimed. RM-alcoholic chain smoker died of lung cancer. Faithful wife, but bedded the most beautiful women in Hollywood. Hunkiness pays off. A good actor. All in all, he led a charmed life.

  • Bob Mitchum was a man who never played the "Hollywood" game..if he had he wouldn't have said what he said here..but was he entirely wrong?..if people won't live in peace with you as Bob said..what are you supposed to do?....Of course Bob loved "taking the mickey" out of journalists during interviews while keeping a straight face...maybe this is what he was doing here..It was well known that he rarely showed his true feelings in public..thanks for posting such an interesting video

  • Shit, even stoned out of your head, as he clearly was, that is so wierd to hear from such a definitively cool guy.

I'd never seen this before. Is there a context?

  • I don't know the context of this particular clip, it's from the Extra Features of a disc called Berkley in th Sixties. Bob apparently had some authority with Vietnam because he'd been there, but I don't know in what capacity.

  • Robert Mitchum should have run for president in 1968. He would have easily have won, he would've "pushed the button" and killed all of the vietcong, saving 40,000 + American lives. A true patriot and hero to America. We need more men like him today.

  • Robert McNamara was the engineer of our war tactics in Vietnam. He's the star of a film called The Fog of War. See it. (He's 84 years old and looking back)

  • Oh God, I really don't have words for fucking idiots like you.

  • Too bad we did not subscribe to this attitude back in the days of October 2001. Mitchum stategy: " Stay out or Wipe out!!" Only two choices. No one to negotiate with. Anyone recall HS Truman's decision? Thanks to whomever posted this wonderful interview with THEE man. Who's rear did he ever kiss! Politically correct would not be among his choices today either. What a guy!!! Love him forever!!!

  • Wow, lost a lost of respect for that man. "We can't leave the human race," he says. "What's the alternative? Kill them. Push the button," he says. I think he had already left the human race when he uttered those last words.

  • Spoken like a true carnivore. Love that Bob.

  • We were going to stop communism in Viet Nam, before it spread through the whole world. We lost the war. Well, sort of. Today, Viet Nam is asking for more US companies to invest in their country. They offer an attractive business climate. Amazing, how it all turned out. They became capitalists and we became communists.

  • Socialists. Not yet but certain in the future.

Amazing that United States is once again at war in another country that we have no business fighting for. We will leave disgraced from Iraq just like we did in Vietnam.

United States has it's own big issues and problems like crime and drugs. Deal with that before cleaning up elsewhere in the world.

  • It would have been a bit hard to join up when he was 49 at the time of this interview..

They might have been desperate for recruits but not that desperate..

  • Thank you for the spelling lesson, I was sick and taking some meds but thats cool,oh by the way, kiss my ass! (did I spell that right?)

  • Also, there should be a period after "lesson," a comma after "meds," an apostrophe in "that's," a period after "cool," a capital "O" in "Oh," a comma after "Oh," and a capital "D" in "Did." But I don't suppose it really matters. At least you made yourself understood, which is more than many posters manage to do.

  • It's to bad he's not around now to give the same advise. He was a visionary!!!

  • Too spelled wih two "O"s, advice spelled with a "C".

  • Well not the communists have by the gonads.

    Vote Ron Paul!

  • best thing going !!!

  • actor needs better dialogue

  • Robert Mitchum must have just been having a bad day or was caught up in all the propaganda bullshit of this time. Thank God our country learned its lesson. lol

  • yeah

  • So true! We did learn our lesson. Never again will this happen. Now everyone knows to wipe out every last communist pig so that when we leave millions of people won't be murdered. Thank god we were pulled out of there by you and your leftist ilke. The truly kind humanitarian thing to do is to sacrifice ourselves and our own freedoms so that others who have never known them might, you hippie pig.

  • HoorayTV21 - Don't get me wrong - I love Robert Mitchum even if I didn't agree with him. That being said, we have no business being in Iraq right now. That country didn't attack us. This is a losing battle.

Why do you Republicans resort to calling people names? To Republicans, all women are whores or dykes. It makes them all sound so stupid.

  • he smoked a lot of weed but he sure wasn't a hippie was he? hahah

  • Amen! Love this video. Short, sweet, and to the point.
