I had one of these damn things get into my loft once without me knowing it. I was wondering why my birds wouldn't trap no matter what I did, finally I went into the loft to see one of my birds up on it's perch and this little hawk (couldn't have been more than a year old) flopping around on the ground w/a busted wing. Best I can figure is that he hurt himself inside the loft chasing the pigeon that was in there with him or trying to get out. I learned not to leave my trap open after that.
i used to keep tipplers when growing up... tumblers etc./. and my father raced pigeons... and he was always on look out for hawks.. so this is familiar to me
@pahoboye This particular Loft or "Coop" commonly called in NYC is closed for now. I'll build another one somewhere; but at the moment I enjoy other guy's loft in the Bronx.
Make a short video, my friend in my video in living in Puerto Rico for the moment building his house. Hopefully we will get to build another loft soon
I was told by some old pigeon men, that Ur not suppose to fly ur birds only in Spring time, that's when most hawks go up north to mate its usually safer for pigeons to fly then and less of a chance of being killed.
@13Hooka Birds of prey are good for purging your flocks of weaklings and slow bums; however, and sadly, some good birds are often the victims as well. I love nature and respect the birds of prey even when they take some of my best birds.
@13Hooka Springtime is indeed the best time to fly your pigeons because the hawks would rather go after mice, rabbits, etc. Hawks have to work pretty hard to snag a pigeon & fail rate is higher. However, no time of year is guaranteed safe, & if you want to keep your flock in top shape, they need to be exercised regularly, hawk or not. I hate the red tail hawks, they sit quietly in a tree & swoop down, *BAM* pigeon never sees it coming! Smaller hawks however will give chase,
@13Hooka it may take 15+ minutes, but the hawk or falcon will drive the pigeon down lower & lower until, exhausted, it crashes into trees, the side of the house or the ground, then it will pounce & start ripping pigeon to shreds. It's pretty exciting to watch, but it's very frustrating if it's one of my favorite pigeons >:0(
@blkramhemi unfortunately, we had to shut down shop - too many chiefs up there. It's only feasible when you own the property. But I will "throw up another flock someday" just a matter of time, when I buy a new house in the next three years.
Rollers are in the Tippler family, here in New York City a lot of "Flyers" call them Tipplets. What kind of birds do you have & what are your training methods?
SirianKings-- is right and hawk and falcon aren't the same falcon are smaller and hawk are bigger, also hawk are know to mostlt attack chicken and falcon is to know mostly attack smaller animal
@Donspigeons You must look at Falcons & Hawks with respect; they must eat also and if I have a bird that is too slow and cannot maneuver out of the way then he/she deserves to be a meal. I guess, I am just really into the survival of the fittest .

Someone called the Police about the hawk. Pretty quick response; I hear the police car siren.

@DontPublicMe In da hood we don't call the Police, only to collect the bodies strewn about.

rx9s, the birds were luck on this day, family of hawks seem to be drifting on a hot lift of air. However in August we lost a red Homer to a Falcon.
kimdayne 2 years ago
Hawks won't be able to catch them airborne; falcons on the other hand have a good chance.
