Probably replayed and replayed. Dude is pretty good. If you beat the game and save it, it saves all your current states so by starting over with those profiles you can pick up where you left off. Least that's how it works for DMC4. And DMC4 is nearly identical to DMC3 in the sense of mechanics.

...I just at this moment did something stupid...I am half awake, I have 2 save data, 1 with dante on this level and 1 with dante after you beat the first boss...and guess what? I have just overwritten the save data with dante on this level with vergil after you beat the first boss...
