  • What is this from?

  • the big guy is a short guy

  • It's great that he's just sitting in a car

  • We're all actors, every single last one of us. We all want to be a star in our own movie so Tom Waits can do what he wants. He's good to watch, good to listen to and a great songwriter so who gives a fuck if he's acting. Anyone with negative comments is acting. Acting clever when they're not. All the best Tom

  • this man acts like he has been working 3 full-time jobs for years.

  • Why is this video so damn short?

  • HAHAHAHA! THIs man isphenomenal

  • Does anyone know what this clip is excerpted from?

  • nice take on it...

  • @backpocketfoundation i like how you avoided the actual content of the message since it hurt your feelings. stupid groupie rofl

  • @johnny4463435 i like how all of your hateful comments contradict the teachings of your religion

  • @johnny4463435 "everyone other than his fanboys here can see how fake and cliche that act is ;)"

everything we do is fake and cliché, we're just inconsciously pretending all the time, but when we do it in front of a camera we have an excuse.

  • @flipflipflipputain some to more extent than others

  • unfortunately for all those discussing religion, he's talking in artistic temrs

  • It's a performance. The end.

  • Started in the mail room, worked his way up, ya'know invested well lmfao.

  • Tom Waits IS a God

  • What an awesome perspective of heaven. "You float to the surface like a dead carp."

  • what is this from?

  • thank god im an athiest, like tom!

"get off the cross, we could use the wood"

  • @yoda43 Waits is no atheist. He's stereotypical agnostic. He's not especially opposed to the idea of the existence of God. He simply doesn’t put much faith in the existing traditional religions. But he does use the religious references to debate it and throw in ideas about ways of looking at things of this sort. If you don’t beleave me you can check it out at this site. It’s an interesting collections of his quotes on the subject.

  • @yoda43 Just type in google "Tom waits on religon" in tomwaitslibrary

  • @yoda43 How tolerant and liberal of you.

  • Tom Waits cracks me up....

  • @efyfe by who? i was talkin here!

  • Tom Waits is much better than any god the human imagination can cook up.

  • wow! that is exactly what i think. is tom waits reading my mail?

  • ahh tom, the underdog philosopher and poet ,the troubador of lonley hearts and dreamers, the yeats/beckett/bible. the humanism and understanding, the music of the soul, but im a fan anyway.

  • hehehheh brilliant

  • Or shitting on -American little ways- definitions. The man!

  • What is this clip from?

  • He should know, he has been there!

  • Ahh he's just being humble...he is god!

  • Goddamn I'm gonna piss myself Tom Waits is so fuckin'... his demeanor and attitude is so morbid that one can do not but laugh. And I laughed.

  • I was an atheist until I heard Rain Dogs.

  • Heh heh. This clip made me laugh. "God started in the mailroom...worked his way up. He invested well." Prosperity theology in a nutshell, lol.

  • Tom Waits is AMAZING!

  • there is a story about a man who was at a bar where he met god, he asked him: which religion is the true?

he Answered: i seriosly dont know cause i never really been religous.

  • Gods a short guy............funniest cunt alive!! Tom rules. God you've been found out!!! Ohhh yeah Tom gods investments took a hammering recently with the stockmarket. He's net worth is now less than the Rockerfellas and the Builderbergs hahahahahaa

  • "We´re lost Wayne!"

  • yee!:D now i understand too :)

  • poodle is perfect..

    jh

  • Started in the mail room, invested well...

  • What a great metaphor.

    Controversial video.

  • Can anyone tell me where James Joyce etc. fit into the equation here ? Personally I,m on here to watch this fantastic all rounder and you see comments about people your not interested in .Tom Waits, is in a different league from these people , he,s a breed apart .Class Act !

  • There is no comparing him to a Joyce type. All art is a fiction. Waits has insight and depth, he lives in a fictional past in his music, with all the dangers, unsolvable questions, and beauty and joy of real life. Academic probing is pointless. this is about the heart.

  • what is academic probing?

  • No one is probing, certainly not academically. Joyce, of all the people I mentioned, was absolutely about the heart. It's not the fact that he uses irony, or has style, it's that he's more of a hack than plenty of other musicians who have the same two things in addition to more substance.

My point is not merely "He's not as good as James Joyce." My point is, "He's not that great. He's really good, but not great. Plenty of other musicians *are* that great."

  • Scratch that, I didn't state that second paragraph well, I think he IS that great as a musician. It's when his gimmicky act, his personality and wisdom, comes in that he gets out of his league, but clearly thinks he's in it.

  • You guys are right anyway, I mean, except about him being in "a league of his own" and "more about the heart" than the people I mentioned.

But I'm making a stupid point here, because any musician or band I can think of sounds terribly unaware or sort of unconscious when asked to talk about their music, right down to the beatles, zeppelin, etc. They are some brand of whimsy artists, or something, brilliant at what they do. Like zephyrs. Not here to elocute, but to blow through us.

  • With the exception of Joyce, he is more about the heart than the others you mentioned. He can express things is a more emotive way than Foucault and Dennett.

When I heard 'Tom Traubert's Blues' for the first time I damn near wept. Did that happen when I read Foucault? No. Waits is an artist and it's his job to express things in a more emotive, intense, and beautiful way than philosophers and scientists.

  • That's just your opinion and it's shit imo.

Tom Waits is not only great, he's a brilliant musician, and poet.

  • & Actor

  • whats your point/whats the difference?

  • apples and oranges. -i see your point but i disagree that style and irony are superficial, especially with tom waits. just because he's not trying to tell you anything specific doesn't make his message any less meaningful or enlightening. style and grace and great art is it's own message, and as far as i'm concerned it speaks from a place with as much meaning and importance as any philosopher, theologist, sociologist......whatever. though, i wouldn't really compare the two.

  • Who said that he was being deep and insightful? He's just being funny and fucking around is all. If you fail to recognise this . . . well, I guess you ain't that insightful either.

  • I think it's clear that in his opinion he is doing more than just fucking around. He's being ironic, and oh so clever--and there's profundity behind it all.

By constantly maintaining an ironic or sarcastic stance, any criticism can be brushed off by saying "he's just fucking around," but that's an ancient and hollow technique. It doesn't fly.

  • I think you're the one trying to be clever. He is just fucking around, he fucks around all the time - he's pretty funny, could probably make it as a stand up.

And you talk about Joyce - well, he was fucking around a lot, too, relishing in taking the piss out of wannabe intellectuals like yourself.

  • No need to get personal, thanks.

  • Yeah, I guess that was my personal, subjective opinion of you. A bit like this:

"I think it's clear that in his opinion he is doing more than just fucking around. He's being ironic, and oh so clever--and there's profundity behind it all."

Yeah, no need to get personal. You're right. I just thought it was all so clear. I apologise.

  • You seem to have honest hatred or spite towards me. I'm sorry I annoyed you. Obviously I was judging Tom Waits, but it seems to me a different thing to judge artists-- something they sign up for. I argued with gusto because that's how debate works in my experience. I will fully admit if I'm wrong, but I don't want to degenerate into insults. I'd rather not talk at all, and concede completely, than get into a pissing match, so I'm sorry to have created such a sad opinion of myself in your mind.

  • Stop being so fucking presumptuous. "Honest hate and spite?" Your evident presumptuousness aside, I don't know you man (?), so I obviously can't hate you.

  • Okay. Just annoyance, or whatever.

  • That's not to say that he isn't insightful, though. He can be, in his own surreal way.

  • The song played in the background is the last minute of the song "Please wake me up" from the Franks Wild Years album. When the music comes back after fading out first.

  • umm... AWESOME!

I need to find someway to put this on a continuous loop so it can play int he background as I work.

  • lol as poetic as we should expect from Tom. Now what the hell is this audio preview thing?

  • What's the background song? It's either from Orphans or Frank's Wild Years...

  • please wake me up

  • Nickfortune, where did u take this from? which interview or tv show?

  • ". . .and you know, we all just float up like dead karp." Brilliant!

  • haaaaaaaaa so funny

  • Haha, so brilliant. I love Tom Waits.

  • hahaha ^^ a true hero

  • he's a looker

  • does anyone know what this is taken from and if there's anymore?

  • Coolest guy ever

  • you know he´s short guy started in the mail room :) love it

  • no, he's Tom Waits

  • Why would he need to get high when his mind is so wonderfully absurd as is?

  • Haha awesome.
