Hey Aquaman~ thanks for the comment. We did have a lovely day out on the water, but that was the one and only fish we caught at the very last moment. It spit the hook out as soon as we got it onboard, and under the circumstances, if not gaffed, we would have lost it. We wanted to keep it for dinner with our out-of-town guests who had never seen or eaten striper before. As I've said B4, we fish to eat - and it was one tasty striper. :)
First off sorry for the double post everyone. McGothlette, you don't have to justify keeping a bass to eat for my sake. Your guests must of enjoyed the fish. You shouldn't take a bunch of crap about how the fish was landed, or the fact that it was kept. Besides, gaffing stripers is very common on charter boats, far more common than some of these guys think.
Hey Aquaman - THX again. I hear ya. As we discussed, I removed one of the double posts. Your comments are appreciated. Look forward to seeing your vids when you put them up. Send me a notice, if you would. Cheers!
Nice fish McGothlette. That's my home water, looks like a million dollar day you had. We gaff bass all the time, these pinheads on here probably fish for small mouth bass in Wisconsin... the only time we net is during tournaments. Nice catch.
Contrary to what was said below this fish was quite obviously legal. As far as I know gaffing is legal in MA. Therefore nothing illegal happend. Would I have netted the fish and released it? Probably. But I didn't cath it now did I? The angler in the video did. It's his fish, what he does with it is his perogative, not mine, nor anyone else's. He decided to keep it for the table. Good for him. Nice vid McGothlette, it looks like you guys had fun that day.
We were keeping and killing the fish - and didn't have a net large enough. In future, we may procure a large net in order to reduce trauma to the fish before killing it, although under those conditions, we may have lost it if we tried to net it, and I'm not sure it would make much difference to the fish.
agreed captkid, seriously gaffing is for blues and tuna, stripers almost never. That thing is barely 28 inches (maybe not even) so gaffing before measuring is not a good idea.
The charter capt. decided to gaff the fish and was correct because if not, we would have lost the fish. We kept it as you hear him confirm on the vid. The fish was livelier than a few you catch in your vids; and our stern appears higher. Basically, what's the diff if you are going to keep and kill the fish? You gaff a larger, but much more sluggish striper in your vid. We only wish we had brought a club to more humanely stun the fish before putting him in the cooler. As they say, "analyze this"
Thx. In the video you can hear the captain asking if we'd like to keep the fish or not before he gaffs it. We don't really believe in fishing for sport as even catch & release is tough on the fish - often deadly, especially when many fishermen are careless in how they do so. We actually eat what we catch and that fish was delish! :-)

Nice Striper. Did you have to gaff it? Catch and release!
