@Nomoreidsleft I have some Maxtor drives (new and old) that continue to work perfectly well. I'm not inclined to write all of them off. It seems like I've had more trouble with their drives failing than any other and the 6E040L0 has been unusually bad even by those standards.
interesting enough, i've got a 6E040L0 40GB Maxtor Diamond Max Plus 8 that still works perfectly fine..
problem with those drives was that the firmware was stored on the platters, and a firmware bug let it go into safemode to prevent data loss... which unfortunately also blocks any access to the drive (not even the BIOS could recognize them).
Basically the same problem the Seagate 7200.11 drives have.
oh and BTW.. i'm still using DiMax Plus 9 & 10 drives in my main comp. much more reliable
Oh man I got a laugh from this! I have a stack of dead drives that grows over time as I work on computers, and wild guess which brand dominates this stack. When it gets up to around 30-40 drives, I take them over to a metal recycling place that has a big industrial shredder. I get to toss the dead drives into the shredder. :)
well i would take them apart. there are some good things in those hard drives like you can make things with platters and the magnets in them are pretty strong.
The platters aren't actually sharp on the edges (although the ones in laptop drives are thinner and therefore might be). The worst risk you run is getting hit with one, but as you can see, they don't stay airborne for any length of time.
i have a video of me defragmenting/repairiing a maxtor 541dx slimline (same but 5400 rpm) i literally destroy that drive maxtor sucks!!!!!!! WD is my drive now
OK, I now know what I'm going to do with the scrap Maxtors I have. And it's true: with a few exceptions, the usual Maxtor sure isn't good for storing data. At least, not with any sort of longevity.
(Of all the makes I've had, the only hard drives I've ever had to return were Maxtors and Conners.)
Is it a Zenith TV? This one is a great TV. I picked it up off the curb when the buttons fell out of the Magnavox TV I used to have in the kitchen. This one was made in St. Louis, MO in 1983.
This one recently got a digital converter, and I was stunned to see that even all these years later, the color and focus in the picture tube are still absolutely perfect.
I wonder how many fancier newer TVs will last that long, or do that well as they age?
WOW yea that is a good question! is the quality the same????
my grand mother used to have one of those big screens that pops out of the cabinet and wow sometimes I think the 80's were ahead of thier time with certain things......
I don't know if a regular CD will even stay in one piece at 7200 RPM. This is a hard drive, not a CD-ROM.
I was once running a CD-ROM drive in a partially taken apart state. It spun up to a high rate of speed, and something went wrong. The plastic disc exploded suddenly. Good thing I was across the room when it did. I found disc pieces all over that room, and it was a big room.
Maxtor Sucks & UxwBill ROCKS, Thanks Bill, been an avid fan since the MAXTOR Enclosure, specially enjoy the car & keykeeper segments, keep them comin'!!!
i wont be trying this with any of my maxtors. they rock solid drives. maybe with a scrapped 15000 rpm hdd i have lying about :-D awesome vid mate. 5* faved (and a witness to the true author)
To be fair, I've got some that have been fine and continue to give good service. My web server boots from a slimline 10GB model and has run since 2004 24/7. I've got a 200GB one as a secondary drive in a Power Mac G4 that is also doing fine. And I have a few Deskpro EN systems that have either the "Poker" DSP based Maxtor drives or the rebadged made-by-Panasonic Fireball lct drives...and all of those are working well.
It's just that my "dead drives pile" has more Maxtor in it than any other.
I knew there was a good use for a maxtor drive now I know what it is! thanks for shareing Im going to try this out side sometime when there is no snow on the ground.
Imagine doing that with a 15,000 RPM SCSI drive. :D

LOL looks like a good way to lose a finger. Sometimes, you gotta find entertainment in the most random shit.

Yeah, but I'm not sure the Maxtor side of the operation has improved. Once bitten, twice shy...that sort of thing.

My worst experiences have been with IBM DeskStar... a.k.a "DeathStar" drives. They'll work fine one day and then act completely dead the next.
