  • @JohnsFiddleLessons After 37 years of playing, 1 national championship, 1 international championship, 4 state championships, and touring with 3 major label artists....yes, I can definitely tell the difference between the direction of a bow stroke regardless of speed of song.

  • @capitalismforme That's amazing; I absolutely can not. Anyone else?

  • @JohnsFiddleLessons MOOOOOOOOOOOO

  • You shouldn't be teaching. The bow is the most critical part to playing the violin regardless of what is being played.

  • @capitalismforme AND there is rosin pretty far up on the fingerboard and not so much near the bridge. No offense!!! I'm a classical violinist and that's just something we take note of. Bowing towards the bridge makes the sound of the instrument louder as well. That is not only based off of pressure applied to the bow, John. ;-)

  • @Spangley03 No offense, but I'm not a huge fan of classical-style fiddling :)

  • @JohnsFiddleLessons It's good to expand your horizons. I picked up the fiddler's fakebook one day because I decided that exploring the techniques used in other playing styles would be beneficial to what I already know of the classical genre.

  • @Spangley03 That's cool! I learned to read sheet music using the fakebook. I think it is an absolutely awesome piece of research.

  • @capitalismforme Haha please see my tutorial on playing without the bow. Actually I said that the "direction" is not critical in slow songs. Or at least I've never been able to close my eyes and reliably guess whether an up-bow and a down-bow was being played. Can you?

  • God Bless you and thank you for this video!!

  • thanks john, have always wanted to learn shuffle your video was great

  • This sure does take coordination... haha I need to work on this

  • Very useful video. Thank you very much!

  • Useful video thanks

  • Thank you!

    Great videos!!!!

  • Good tip. Thanks.

  • Hi John,

I have always wanted to play a scale like you do in this video, and I will get it eventually, but would like to have the sheet music as backup, and use it with your video. Learning such wonderful exercises will surely make your children great fiddlers, and improvisers. Thanks for putting that out, and i'm so grateful I found it!

  • great lesson. goes well with the lesson for cajun fiddle, which I am starting to work on. Thanks again for all these wonderful lessons!

  • great lesson. I learned the shuffle with boil the cabbages. Working with scales is what i will do today. thanks

  • Ive been trying to get that for a long time, but I think your tutorial is going to help. Thanks!

  • John - useful! Heard an interesting fiddle style from a group in the north of England reconstructing English 18thC fiddle style using bow markings on old manuscripts. The fast shuffle with 2 notes on the long bow was very widely used and helps make sense of a lot of the old tunes. Google for "Village Music Project Lecture Sidmouth" & you should find a lecture by Paul Roberts. Sounds great, & probably as close as you can get to the origins of the US Old Time style. Now to learn it!

  • Can you do a demonstration of a Georgia shuffle?

and what do old time fiddlers use.

  • Can you also show how the Georgia shuffle is done ?

  • can i ask a question? I loved this idea of placing a 'flurry of notes' over a shuffle. So I went back and took a piece with many notes and tried it. (tried to learn the left hand noting, first playing in sawing bowing. Then changed the bowing to the shuffle)

What stumped me was I absolutely could NOT remember it. no matter how many times I played it. It was a matter of playing note and I could not remember was I in a Long or a short now, I just couldn't remember it.

    any tips?

  • @frmertd It's totally muscle training at first. I promise, it will soon be second nature. You won't have to think about it at all.

  • @JohnsFiddleLessons you are right! I started talking while playing and saying "and then TURN round, end then TURN round" with the TURN being the part when it starts the 'short short" and it has worked out great!!! After hours and hours of just shuffling it has become 2nd nature, as I've built that muscle memory. thanks so much. This has helped me immensely!!!!! thanks for posting you really have taken my fiddling to new levels with this video!!!

  • @frmertd Yay! I know it's hard work but it will pay off!

  • Thanks, John, for another great lesson!!

  • Very helpful in learning the bowing technique. I'm practicing the scales doing the one-note shuffle technique. When you start to play Old Joe Clark with this shuffle technique, do you start with the first two notes with the down bow and then take off from there with the rest of the series? In other words, you're starting with down(two notes) up/down, up (two notes) down/up....I may be confused.

  • @awclogger Yes, exactly! The down/up is the lead-in to the first measure, then the first measure begins with a long down bow.

  • Oh, my God, I was just questioning the bowing technique!! I was going to ask a fiddle player about it and lo and behold you posted this video! THANK YOU SO MUCH! I am also learning Old Joe Clark!! I learned Fisher's Hornpipe from your video.

  • @awclogger Cool I'm glad it was helpful!

  • Thanks John! I was actually about to email you about this very thing. Looking forward to putting this tip to use.

    Blessings,

    Jeff

  • Great addition to your other lessons. More like this would be great. Thank you so much for posting this video.

  • Great... really useful and always nice to have a new exercise to work on. I had been struggling with the B part of your Billy in the Low Ground perhaps it will work now with a bit of a shuffle. Many thanks ~ Chris

  • very good tips, thank you

  • Excellent tutorial John! Shuffling has always been a mystery to me but your explanation was crystal clear, thanks.
