actually having that clip helped determine what the sound was. Every dsm owner who watched/heard the clip said right away what it was. it wasnt the lifters as i stated i rwplaced them with new/revised ones. 4g63 motors are solid motors for most part if taken care of.
I love it when everyone throws in their guess as to what the problem is based on a grainy 240p video upload of an engine ticking. "Its the lifters, its a spun bearing, its a mouse tap dancing inside the crankcase...."
I had the car tuned by a local performance shop the day before and in the way home the next day cruising at 65mph it started knocking. I installed revised lifters and it still made the same sound. Took the motor out and put a new short block on. Car ran great till it was sold and then he totaled it.
When i first rebuilt my motor i thought i had a spun bearing the first time i started. nut ive been drivin it hard for another 12k after that and still dont have another rod on through my firewall soo im thinkin i got a bad case of the "tick"

definately 100% rod knock, and u prob fucked ur shit more by letting it run, and revin like that genius..drain ur oil and it will have gold flakes from the bearing u spun lol
Hey, I have that problem too... At first I was thinking of the lifters, then the tensioner bearing... But then when I remove the timing belt cover, I discover a leak on the hydraulic auto tensioner...I replace it, now it's back to normal 4G63 engine sounds
i know its an old vid but ill comment anyways. if you revv it really hard and it is a rod problem. the faulty rod will come out and tell u that it has a problem :)
I bet my bottom dollar, that is rods, slappin crank....I am in the middle of a rebuild mine sounded just like that. Turned out to be 2 bad rod bearings... New crank and acl's try again... goodluck.
do you know how a engine works, if it was a possible rock know then why the hell are you running it? why not pop the oil pan and check rod bearings... the more you run it the more you destroy the rod and crank...duhhh... neways sounds like a rod
Did you ever get this fixed? I have a 95 Talon AWD Tsi and spun a bearing, sounds just like this. Turbo seals blew, started to smoke, and then bearing spun due to overheating and lack of lubrication. Limped it home. Most engine shops can clean up your crank journals and will replace your bearings for under 2000. It's well worth it, and usually comes with a warranty on the work (at least a year). Or you can rebuild it yourself. You can find a good 6 bolt on eBay for under 1000.
not true dude crankwalk is caused because the stock bearings in the 7 bolt motor suck ass trust me it happened to me right at the 90,000 mile mark stock motor never messed with at all, but not saying your totally wrong because cranks are not supposed to have any play at all
oh yea gott ajump to crankwalk. wtf dude. its not an every day or car thing. it barely happens believe it or not. most people think because they are notorious for it that is automatically the problem.
Ok, if its not the lifters. Than it is a piston ticking against your cylinder wall. Who knows which one it is, but it is one of your pistons smacking that wall. I had the same noise in my Evo, I replaced all the lifters. Didn't fix it. Finally i tore it down and looked at the bottom end. The 4th cylinder had scratches on the wall. Ths piston did too. I replaced just the 4 pistons and honed the cylinders out a tiny bit. And Bingo The Noise is now gone. RUNS PERFECT no ticking.
Pull the valve cover. Check that all the rockers are snug ( make sure the cam isn't pressing on the one you're checking. If they're not snug, you have a lifter problem. Also, make sure your valves have all retainers/rockers in the right place.
i hada similar noise but it went away at times. any way i hada "walking crank" and the tangs in mi bearings had somehow ben pushed in and so they were doin full circles in the big end. just hada full rebuild n started it today yaya!! PS does the clutch act funny sometimes??
Bearing... doing mine right now, sounds identical. When I pulled the pistons and bearing supported, only the furthest inside journal looked messed up. Might be caused by unbalanced compression like mine was.
anything engine speed is on the crank, attached or related to it, if it were evey other rotation of crank then valvetrain related. And o had a 4g63 with same noise. Spun 2 main bearings in an evo with 2000 miles on it.
yea bro it deff sounds like you may have spun a bearing. did it start to knock when you where driving? if so its deff a spun beaing, u can also check... if you take out your dipstick( dont wipe it) you will be able to see tiny metal shavings at the end.
crank walk my friend, i had the same issue

thats a lifter tap.. you can tell when he revvs up that it gets a lil silent.. and if it was a spun bearing it would sound way deeper

paradox616 2 years ago
Bearing. You can hear it kinda clanking at idle from 0:20-0:40 and it also clanks when the rpms fall off after he revs.
Lifter tick is more of a tapping sound
1DjDelta 2 years ago
sounds like a spun bearing to me! See how when he revs it the sound becomes inconsistent.....its because its a loose(spun) bearing!

You shouldn't rev the car with a rod knock although you posted this last year revving it will destroy your engine a lot faster.
Hope you have a better setup by now.

lifter tick should go away when u rev up.
jarekdsm 3 years ago
thats a rod bro, sorry to hear it.
Rod knock is a blunt knock that gets slappy when you rev it.
Lifter tick is sharp, crisp sounding and consistent
veltpak6 3 years ago
my 90 talon tsi makes that exact noise but not quite as noisy tho, gaurenteed u just need new lifters try running redline or royal purple oils.

yeah like he said, take off the oil pan and jiggle where the rod attaches to the crankshaft. there may be too much wear causing them to become loose
