  • crank walk my friend, i had the same issue

  • actually having that clip helped determine what the sound was. Every dsm owner who watched/heard the clip said right away what it was. it wasnt the lifters as i stated i rwplaced them with new/revised ones. 4g63 motors are solid motors for most part if taken care of.

  • I love it when everyone throws in their guess as to what the problem is based on a grainy 240p video upload of an engine ticking. "Its the lifters, its a spun bearing, its a mouse tap dancing inside the crankcase...."

  • Same thing happened to mine. We put a race head on a new bottom end and it works fine

  • sounds pretty deep and not much of a ticking defently low end take the oil pan off and see wich ones are lose

  • spun rod bearing...

  • I had the car tuned by a local performance shop the day before and in the way home the next day cruising at 65mph it started knocking. I installed revised lifters and it still made the same sound. Took the motor out and put a new short block on. Car ran great till it was sold and then he totaled it.

  • yes that would be the rods...i had the same exact problem...now it's bored .50 over and crank turned

  • @midnightride42 at least they took it out of its misery hahahaha

  • Yes, it was the rod bearing. Pulled the pan and there was metal shavings.

  • @midnightride42

Replace just the bearings or the rod aswell?>

  • Hey dude, did you ever find out what the noise was? My car is doing the EXACT same thing!

  • li fter noise

  • Sounds good to me, lets redline this bitch!

  • When i first rebuilt my motor i thought i had a spun bearing the first time i started. nut ive been drivin it hard for another 12k after that and still dont have another rod on through my firewall soo im thinkin i got a bad case of the "tick"

  • @BoostedMirage-- In no way is a lifter tick bro, that is a knock.. U need to get your finger out ur ears son..

  • thats a lifter tap.. you can tell when he revvs up that it gets a lil silent.. and if it was a spun bearing it would sound way deeper

  • Rod for sure.

  • pull the oil pan off and itll be a dead giveaway cause there will be hellla metal shavings in there

  • its a rod

  • I know that sound all to well.. Same thing happened to mine.

  • nice title, spun a rod. you spin bearings.

  • definately 100% rod knock, and u prob fucked ur shit more by letting it run, and revin like that genius..drain ur oil and it will have gold flakes from the bearing u spun lol

  • Hey, I have that problem too... At first I was thinking of the lifters, then the tensioner bearing... But then when I remove the timing belt cover, I discover a leak on the hydraulic auto tensioner...I replace it, now it's back to normal 4G63 engine sounds

  • sounds like a combo of both. haha

  • sounds like rod knock, start pulling plugs on each cylinder when it gets louder thats the one thats fucked

  • did you replace the Pistons?? one pod could be to big or the piston is to small

  • i know its an old vid but ill comment anyways. if you revv it really hard and it is a rod problem. the faulty rod will come out and tell u that it has a problem :)

  • @chambeers That's because it's a DSM

  • haha my 4 wheeler sounded like that!

  • shut it off your only doing more damage lol

  • I bet my bottom dollar, that is rods, slappin crank....I am in the middle of a rebuild mine sounded just like that. Turned out to be 2 bad rod bearings... New crank and acl's try again... goodluck.

  • what was the verdict..? Im positve it was not your lashadjusters (lifters).. have any details..? sux man.. did you swap to a 6bolt?

  • Nice, the first 4D63!!! LOL

  • rod bearing

  • lol spun a rod... think you mean bearing champ!

  • Bearing. You can hear it kinda clanking at idle from 0:20-0:40 and it also clanks when the rpms fall off after he revs.

Lifter tick is more of a tapping sound

  • sounds like a spun bearing to me! See how when he revs it the sound becomes inconsistent.....its because its a loose(spun) bearing!

  • um yeah, to me sounds like rod knock. rebuild or swap time man.

  • thats a rod i got lifters going out in my 1st gen and it dont sound like that

  • did you ever find out what was wrong?

  • do you know how a engine works, if it was a possible rock know then why the hell are you running it? why not pop the oil pan and check rod bearings... the more you run it the more you destroy the rod and crank...duhhh... neways sounds like a rod

  • valves maybe just gets stuck and the detenation slams it back up

  • Did you ever get this fixed? I have a 95 Talon AWD Tsi and spun a bearing, sounds just like this. Turbo seals blew, started to smoke, and then bearing spun due to overheating and lack of lubrication. Limped it home. Most engine shops can clean up your crank journals and will replace your bearings for under 2000. It's well worth it, and usually comes with a warranty on the work (at least a year). Or you can rebuild it yourself. You can find a good 6 bolt on eBay for under 1000.

  • i know exactly what that is, adjust your rear view mirror a little to the right, she'll be all fixed up.....

  • not true dude crankwalk is caused because the stock bearings in the 7 bolt motor suck ass trust me it happened to me right at the 90,000 mile mark stock motor never messed with at all, but not saying your totally wrong because cranks are not supposed to have any play at all

  • Fuck that shit.

  • lol gotta love the great 7 bolt crankwalk.....just swap a 6bolt with that head and be happy

  • oh yea gott ajump to crankwalk. wtf dude. its not an every day or car thing. it barely happens believe it or not. most people think because they are notorious for it that is automatically the problem.

  • ticking? id call that a loud KNOCKING noise lol

  • Ok, if its not the lifters. Than it is a piston ticking against your cylinder wall. Who knows which one it is, but it is one of your pistons smacking that wall. I had the same noise in my Evo, I replaced all the lifters. Didn't fix it. Finally i tore it down and looked at the bottom end. The 4th cylinder had scratches on the wall. Ths piston did too. I replaced just the 4 pistons and honed the cylinders out a tiny bit. And Bingo The Noise is now gone. RUNS PERFECT no ticking.

  • must be a 7 bolt lol

  • You shouldn't rev the car with a rod knock although you posted this last year revving it will destroy your engine a lot faster.

Hope you have a better setup by now.

  • had the same problem till my engine blew up. mitsubishi sucks

  • dam that happen to me too and still a work in progress lmao

  • rod knock 100%.

  • This is the sound I hear when I need to add oil lol. I have a 4g64 however.

  • its a rod my friends car did it for 3 days then threw the rod through the block and crushed a piston

  • As I posted a minute ago mines doing this, can I fix this by just rebuilding the bottom end of the engine?

  • Mine started doing this last summer, I parked it as soon as it happened.

  • lifter tick should go away when u rev up.

  • thats a rod bro, sorry to hear it.

Rod knock is a blunt knock that gets slappy when you rev it.

Lifter tick is sharp, crisp sounding and consistent

  • my 90 talon tsi makes that exact noise but not quite as noisy tho, gaurenteed u just need new lifters try running redline or royal purple oils.

  • Pull the valve cover. Check that all the rockers are snug ( make sure the cam isn't pressing on the one you're checking. If they're not snug, you have a lifter problem. Also, make sure your valves have all retainers/rockers in the right place.

  • i hada similar noise but it went away at times. any way i hada "walking crank" and the tangs in mi bearings had somehow ben pushed in and so they were doin full circles in the big end. just hada full rebuild n started it today yaya!! PS does the clutch act funny sometimes??

  • thats loud..and at idle...try running some 20w50 synthetic race oil...it MIGHT help..a tad

  • comment below for bannanabis.

  • definetly rod knock! I hope for your sake you have already ruined the crank. im pretty sure you r screwed.

  • sounds bad lucky mineee puRRSSSSSSSSsss

  • sound like bearings to me, ive got the same sound except mine is quiet at idle, but sounds like that when u rev it...

  • if it were the lifters the noise should go away when you rev the engine a little correct?

  • Bearing... doing mine right now, sounds identical. When I pulled the pistons and bearing supported, only the furthest inside journal looked messed up. Might be caused by unbalanced compression like mine was.

  • 4g63 diesel??? Cool!

  • yea i knew it, theres something not right with your flux capacitor, go try kragen, they will fix you right up. :p

  • sounds like the pistons hitting the head

  • anything engine speed is on the crank, attached or related to it, if it were evey other rotation of crank then valvetrain related. And o had a 4g63 with same noise. Spun 2 main bearings in an evo with 2000 miles on it.

  • exactly the problem. seen the same thing with the same engine. spuns

  • how much does it cost to do a 6 bolt conversion

  • switch 2 wires on ecu to correct firing order, that the hardest part about 6 bolt conversion. easy swap

  • who cares though pull it out and put a 6 bolt in.

  • bearing for sure

  • have a look at your harmonic balancer....let me know

  • lol! Harmonic Balancer???!!!??

  • look for a spun main bearing

  • ok yeah that's not your lifters thats way to loud pull your oil pan off you may find a little surprise..

  • yea bro it deff sounds like you may have spun a bearing. did it start to knock when you where driving? if so its deff a spun beaing, u can also check... if you take out your dipstick( dont wipe it) you will be able to see tiny metal shavings at the end.

  • yeah like he said, take off the oil pan and jiggle where the rod attaches to the crankshaft. there may be too much wear causing them to become loose
