Mount Laguna AFS was NEVER part of the D.E.W. Line. D.E.W. (Distant Early Warning) was one of three radar line networks responsible for radar detection of Soviet aircraft attempting to infiltrate air space over North America.
WOW Thanks for the video,I've watched many a stars from that place, its been far to long since I've been .I shall have to again soon. Thanks for joggin' a nice memory.
Wow, I have been to the base itself, the barraks and stuff, but never to the radar towers on top, I will have to try to make it up there before they demmo them.
Just hit up the lower base today for operation of my ham radio.
Was up there today operating a ham radio from the helipad area. Some of the buildings have recently been removed, fresh buldozer tracks mark the death of more history.
fhood: This place was in the news last fall. The media coverage ended up attracting a lot of people here. Be stealthy if you go now - the USFS is aggressively patrolling this site and issuing trespassing tickets ($74). :-(
I figured the news stories last year is what made people aware of this place. I remember watching KUSI's Michael Turko doing a story on this abandoned base in another one of his attempts to be a "do-gooder", and I thought to myself then, "Oh boy, now EVERYBODY is going to know about this place." Always loved going up there in the summer at night to look out across the desert and up into the sky. Oh well. All good things come to an end.
@fhood Yeah. I remember see this place on the Turko Files, too. :-( The USFS is supposed to restore this place to nature and reopen it to the public, but I like it the way it is NOW!
I've heard that the fine for trespassing is around $150. I've heard that the US Forest Service has really increased patrols of this place lately. It's no longer military property, so you're highly unlikely to get arrested - but you will very likely get a ticket if you get caught. If you do go, avoid drawing attention and park AWAY from the gates. Park down the road by the lodge and then walk up the highway (it's not TOO far) to the entrance to the lower base.
Update: The latest I've heard is that the fine for trespassing here is $75. It could increase at anytime, however, as the government finds creative ways to balance the budget.
The moving wheel is part of an air conditioning and ventilation system. The wind was fairly strong that day and was causing the turbine to turn. This place no longer has electricity and the motors and all were stolen long ago.
it's incredible I stumbled across your video's and pic's of abandoned buildings atop mt. laguna! I first explored these back in 94 while camping at burnt rancheria campground. There was a sort of suspended enclosed walkway between this specific site and an adjacent building. It ran about 50 yards and appeared too eerie, dark and unsafe to enter. I actually feel a bit sad it is all being torn down and would love to go exploring for nostalgia's sake. Thanks for the memories.
Thanks! Yeah, this has got to be THE best abandoned place to explore in all of San Diego County. I didn't discover it until about a year ago. never got to see the enclosed walkway that you described. If you do go explore it, be careful as the USFS is patrolling it more frequently - and issuing trespassing tickets. Still, I think it's worth the risk. :-)
this and the other clips make for a nice video record...one correction...the site was used to look for, and track, possible russian bomber penetrations within the stations designated search pattern. the station had little to do with providing any kind of incoming missle attack warning.
grazio599: Thanks. Glad you liked my videos. Thanks, also, for providing the correct info about this place. I have since updated the description here accordingly.
The spinning gear is part of the ventilation system - it was the strong winds outside blowing into the air vents, spinning the turbine, and causing the gear to turn.

I am amazed at how MUCH more graffitti there is! I was up there about a year ago and there wasn't as much graffitti.

Thanks for the info. I just Googled "AN/FPS-26" and I'll have to say that you are correct. :-)

is that gear just freewheeling on the wall, or is it connected to something thats turning free?

The gear spinning at :35 is cool. The grate walk on the top of the building is cool too.
